Aussie girl needs help *lol*

Hey all *waves*

Sorry to poke my nose into ur forum, but I have a few questions about Florida - and I thought, who better to ask than my TA comrades from across the miles

In 6 weeks I'm leaving on a year-long round the world trip...on my way home in 2005, I'm planning to do USA, Cuba and Mexico....and, I need to get my route finalised now before my travel agent prints out my ticket - once the ticket's printed I can change dates for free, but I get charged if I change the route....

K, I need to be in Miami in order to fly to Cuba from there - and I definitely wanna see Miami....but, is Orlando worth going to as well? I'm ashamed to admit, all I really know 'bout Orlando is Disney World and Epcott.... The reason I'm asking is, because I can only fly into one place in Florida with the ticket I'm getting, because there aren't any direct flights between Orlando and Miami that I'm allowed to get within the ticket rules.... So, my choices are:

1) forget orlando totally and just fly straight into miami

2) fly into orlando, then buy an extra flight to miami (sumthin cheap like south-west, but they only fly to ft lauderdale - is it easy to get a bus or train or whatever from there to miami?)

3) fly into orlando, then rent a car and drive to miami (i've heard the drive down the coast is really nice...but is it nice enuff to risk killing myself seeing as how i'm used to driving on the other side of the road? *lol* and, how long does the drive take?)

Sorry to be such a pain in the butt, but if anybody could help me out at all with any advice I'd reeeeeeeally appreciate it....and I don't know anyone in Florida yet so don't really have anyone to ask

TIA for any help!!! And, if it's easier than posting here, gimme a yell on msn - [email protected]

Hi there.

Miami has a much better club/music scene, but Orlando has all those great theme parks. However, Miami's clubs you have to be 21 to get into the best clubs....not a lot of 18+ ones. It all depends how old you are. If you are 21 and over, you may want to hit Miami in time for June 18 or July 4th!

June 18 - DJ Tisto @ Space OMG!!!
July 4th - Paul van Dyk @ Peacock Park, Coconut Grove DOUBLE OMG!!!!

I don't like Fort Lauderdale's club scene too much.

Anyway, I hope this helps a bit.

Salud. (Cheers.)

*EDIT* For both of the listed events, a lot of us TA's WILL be meeting up so you wouldn't have to party alone!! And the 4th of July event is a FREE event!!! All ages, outdoors. Will be hella fun! Last year DJ Tisto was at said venue, and it was great!

*EDIT *EDIT* If you happen to be in Orlando on 5/29, there will be a MASSIVE TA party that night! A bunch of us will be spinning (myself included... ) and it WILL be memorable!!! The last party like this was in February and it was absolutely KILLER!

Hey,..

You sure are planning way out in advance,.. I mean you are asking about Flordia in 2005!! Anyway I do see your delima in having to choose. Orlando is the tourist capital of the world and having said that there are millions of things to do there. There are about 7 or 8 theme parks there that you could easily spend 2 weeks there and still not see everything, but isn't exactly the cheapest place on Earth. As far as renting a car and driving to Miami, yes that's doable, but that drive is about 3.5 hours and once you get into the Miami area you better have your racing shoes on b/c the traffic gets real crazy on I-95. Trains I don't know about b/c nobody really uses them that much, but a bus is easily available and cheap. Hope this info helps and I'm kinda partial to Tampa so I say you should go visit there. (75 min west of Orlando on the Gulf of Mexico) Have fun on your trip.

Z

DarkAngel - thanks lots forall the info...but I won't be there til 2005 Awww damn, u made me wanna come NOW!!! *lol* But keep in touch, cos I'll need some partying buds next year!!

Zewad - yeah I know it's a long way in advance...but I leave Aus in 6 weeks, and my ticket needs to be printed in a month...if I know now the basic route I'll want on my way home in 2005, I won't need to change the places and I won't get charged

But, I just worked out that to save myself some mileage so it all fits within the rules, I'm better off flying into New Orleans, and then buying an extra ticket to Florida - so, I don't need to decide where in Florida right now after all But from the sounds of things I'll probably skip Orlando (I'll be all theme parked out by then, and I'll want my cash for Cuba and Mexico) and go straight to Miami

Thanks for the help!!!

Your trip sounds fun! I'm excited for you. I was never able to do anything like and anyone that can should definitely jump on the chance! Australia is near the top of my list of places that I want to visit.

Will you be able to keep in touch (online) throughout your trip that way when you do get to FL next year you'll have some people that will be able to show you around?

If you are good with directions and ok with driving then you should definitely fly into Orlando and then drive to Miami. You should spend at least one day in Orlando. You could always fly into Tampa. Are you going to be traveling alone when you are here? Maybe someone could drive with you...just a thought.

You wanna keep in touch, I'm not a hard Angel to find....

Posted by Beemer on May-05-2004 23:53:

trancebrat - awww, u r lovely - thanks for the nice words and the encouragement i've been a lil anxious lately cos my leaving day is coming up sooooo fast, so soon i'll be totally outta my comfort zone and far far from home...but u reminded me to just chill and make the most of whatever opportunities come my way so, thanku yup i'll probably be on my own for the USA part of my trip next year...and yup i'll definitely be on the net whenever i can, wherever i am....so, will keep in touch - would be nice to have a few tour guides over there!! *lol*

bobba lou - hahaha, okay u can definitely be my chauffeur to Space that's half the reason i'm considering having a few days in Miami instead of just going straight thru to Cuba....we keep hearing how great Space is over here - so, i think it's my duty to go there at least once *lol* hmmm, wanna pick me up in orlando?? hahaha - i'll pay u well!!

as for cuba....yeah, i have to go there - my whole life i've felt like it's somewhere i just HAVE to visit

Get me an MSG-90 and within 1000 feet of The Beard and the country will fall.

I swear, that old bastard should be dead by now.

Definitely keep in touch. I live in Tampa which is about an hour and a half from Orlando. We could all do a road trip! Anything for a reason to travel! haha! I know it's one thing to say it now when it's a year down the road, but I don't see why it can't happen. Maybe we will get lucky and some big name DJ will be at Space when you are visiting and everyone can meet up together.

I can understand you being anxious about leaving home for that long...I would be too. Regarding your trip to the US...traveling alone is always hard, but I think it would also be exciting. I have a ton of respect for you for doing something like that alone. Not too many people could. You are going to meet a lot of people and everything that you do (at least while you are here in the states) will be because you want to do it...not because you are going along with the flow.

Space is a must so I'm happy to hear that you are making that a priority!

Take care and keep in touch!

wow, sounds like an adventure!
i wish i could do something like this.

you gonna hit up the carribean at all?
i'd really like to head down to the islands for a week or two.. was supposed to go to the bahamas by boat last summer but it didn't happen.

Orlando is fun for the theme parks, but if it were up to me, I'd fly into miami, rent a car, and drive to key west.

A few warnings though.

In the US, you have to be 25 years old to rent a car, and there is no way you will get a direct plane from florida to Cuba. Most people fly to mexico or Canada, then to Cuba. Ironic, considering that Cuba is less than 100 miles from Key West

Posted by Vero on May-06-2004 23:30:

skip orlando, unless you want to do the disney thing. disney is kinda cheezy and really nothing to get too excited about unless you are under the age of 10. Miami is the place to be. Orlando has no scene whatsoever in comparison to miami.

And dont even try to apologize for posting in here. we FLTAs love all TAs.

Awww, thanx guys...all the advice and nice sentiments are very much appreciated

Roquer - I'm 26, so car is no problemo.......and I know there ain't direct flights from US to Cuba....but, Cayman Airways flys to Cuba via Grand Cayman Island....so, that's what I'll probably end up doing....and means I can spend a few days in the Bahamas en route (wanna join me ex-dj? hehehe) The other alternative is to fly to Cuba from Cancun, with MexicanAir - but that doesn't really suit me cos I wanna do Mexico after Cuba....so, my route will be Miami - Grand Cayman - Havana - Cancun, then off to explore the REAL Mexico (more interested in the Yukatan and the Aztec ruins than the resorts)

Added u to msn trancebrat....roadtrip in 2005 would be FUN

Posted by arturob on May-07-2004 03:26:

Hey Phil, don't diss Orlando. They have someone occasionally come to the O-town. Like PvD, Tiesto, Oakey, Ferry, etc.

Although Orlando scene is nowhere near as good as Miami scene, I gotta give ya that.

And Beemer, welcome to our little place.

Posted by Krypton on May-07-2004 21:44:

forget about orlando. its a very dry place, and disney world isnt what its all cracked up to be. its huge yes, the rides, some are good, the lines, HUGE. the walking, exhausting, the heat, horribly hot.

just go straight to miami. and cuba, u sure u want to go there. its a very poor country and its run by a communist government.

visit club space, and ocean drive while your there. ill tell, ocean drive is the best place to go in all of miami. do not miss it, or you will have missed out on the best part of florida

Lies, all lies. Thats just government (or bourgoise cuban) propoganda that you are spitting out. Every time I am in Jamaica I am tempted to buy a plane ticket to Havanna for $129 and do a day trip. If it wasn't for the fact that I could be charged $7500 for breaking the embargo, I would have already.
