How do u Combine Progressive + tech House + Trance at your Sets??

Hi, in My Country the Word Trance its real uknown, well they know Dj Dammy or some tiesto tunes, but at club Mainly what it sounds are Tech House, Tribal House, Funky House, Progressive.. I Use to combine some tech house like Dj Remy, and progressive at the begining, and then go to trance, tech trance and techno.. however i always spin Shrot Sets, like 3 hours Max... this time Ill play like 5 - 6 Hours, I still want to combine those generes between each others, But i dont know if its a good idea.. by Example.. Im Playing a trance track.. and then.. back to a tech house, progressive track like dj remy or Roland K... How do u combine those generes??.. if u do so... let me know the good or bad ideas in this,,

thanks in advance

I strongly disagree with mixing genres. Once a listener begins to get into your set, you change the style completely and loose thier interest. Also, have fun fitting the tracks together !! It just won't sound right...

A good DJ can blend different genres as long as the genres aren't too different. Trance can be mixed with progressive/house and vice versa...it's tougher to do but it can be done. For example it's good to start your set off with some proggy trance and then slowly build up to harder more uplifting trance.

agreed, that is one thing I am working on now. I play both trance and some house, you just toss in the next track that fits the moood you wanna give off.

it can go terribly wrong if done incorrectly...as I can attest to. but give it a shot, it can sound amazing.

Yes, Indeed u are right, I also think the same.. Actually I dont like to do this.. Most of the time I play Out I spin just Trance or I could combine some Progressive Trance tunes too.. just the ones that goes well.. i think Prog and Uplifting trance goes well, teh thing its that this time I wont have a warm up dj.. do u always have warm up djs??.. i cant imagine me Playing trance at 12 am... maybe i should Request a warm up dj

thanks

by example last time i played:

in order:
dj remy - In Your face
kamaya P - wasteland (chab tribute)
Tremor - Meia Lua
Primer - Indulge..

and then just trance.. it was a good transition

Good thing you're not a DJ.

I think it's the exact opposite. All the best sets I've ever heard combine a number of genres, as do all the best DJs. Look at Adam Freeland's 2003 Essential mix, he plays Nu-Skool Breaks, Electro Breaks, Funky Breaks, Hip-hop, a Rage Against The Machine song... and it's a flawless set. The more genres you use, the more interesting the set is. As you keep playing different stuff, they never know what's next. More genres mean more variety, and the more variety, the less of a chance there is that the listener will get bored. It's true that if done badly it can suck, but done well it makes for a much better set than it would be if you were a wuss and stuck to one genre. Trance is easy to mix anyway.

as long as the set flows and sounds good, it doesnt matter what "genre" the songs are. if it sounds good, go for it.

you're just looking for cross over tracks no? when i play my longer sets, i'll play my luck chable, sasha stuff in the beginnning, go to my markus schulz style stuff in the middle, then get into my trance. did that help AT all?

i would say the complete opposite of this. the more diverse and eclectic the better a dj is! you just need more talent to pull it off.

a set of 100% uplifting trance is suckage.

my favorite djs are Danny Howells and Tijs because I like how they spice it up and make it interesting. If they stayed with one style it would be boring shit. i really hope PartEgurl is not a DJ, lol.

I completley agree with you...these days Im finding myself listening to more non electronic songs to see if any of them can be incorporated into the tech trance/house and progressive style that I spin.
And yeah...trance is easy to mix.

Re: How do u Combine Progressive + tech House + Trance at your Sets??

obviously you would play connector tunes, ie tunes which blur the boundry of genre thus can mix out of one and into the other. like going from trance to tech trance to techno. but obviously with 5 hours youd use more than one tune, and the tunes would blend more smoothly like a trance tune with a tech element, the a bit more tech, then more etc.

yeh, i always mix dark trance then tech trance then techno then back to harder tech trance and maybe hard trance if theres any decent non cheesy tunes about, more genre's make me happy and make the crowd happy and thats what its all about. although tbf tijs is a bit random in his genre usage

Posted by YOUNG on May-06-2004 10:34:

I DON'T AGREE TO STICKING WITH ONE STYLE IN MY MIX SETS I PLAY A VARIETY OF CHOONS (NON CHEESEY CHOONS)RANGING FROM TRIBAL,TECH AND DISCO HOUSE TO PROGRESSIVE ,HARD,TECH AND UPLIFTING TRANCE AND TECHNO AND BREAKBEAT.THIS WAY YOU KEEP THE CROWD ENTERTAINED AND UR EXPRESSING UR SELF IN MORE THAN ONE STYLE.BUT I ALSO LIKE TO PLAY MORE THEN ONE STYLE

but armin just gets me off

to be honest, if i se someones tracklist with all sorts of genres in it, i think it looks pretty clueless. especially if your mxing trance with tech house..i just dont think its gonna work. the two genres are just so different its unreal. like when vandyk tries to play a housey tune before a marco v remix i really wonder.

Posted by XeQtOr on May-06-2004 12:30:

Get some newer Marco V sets. He combines progressive trance, trance, techtrance and techno in his sets.

BTW usually if you mix several genres you start with the slover ones i.e. progressive and then build thru trance/techtrance to some techno. That's how i would do it. I dj that plays many different styles is so much more interesting to listen to than a regular dj that only plays one style of music...

that what makes paul the best dj in the world. U think djs play so you can download and listen to their sets at him. Im sure if u got off your ass and went out you wouldnt feel this way. Nothin is better then playing a few proggy, housish downbeat, not exciting tunes, then hammering hard shit. It makes it soooo much better.

Posted by Toufas on May-06-2004 13:20:

i start either with prog or tech house and then move to trance....those genres are amazing starters

Posted by sandstorm03 on May-06-2004 13:22:

i agree

Posted by Anno Domino on May-06-2004 15:55:

If you are a good DJ... you can mix w/e the fuck you want

take James Zabiela as an example... Sasha does the same...

fuck every DJ should how not to limit themselves like Trance DJ's do...

thats how a genre gets stale

(ans yes i am talking about trance)
