Drunk Runner's High

I was just remembering how probably a month or so ago there was some thread in which someone said they'd never experienced any sort of euphoria from working out at all. I came home early from school today half for feeling like shit and half cause it was just like the shittiest day ever, and it didn't look like the day could get worse, but also was too far gone to get any better. I lounged around the house, watched office space, played a lil soft guitar, and then at about 8 i realized i had tons of energy, probably atributed to the fact that in coming home early i also missed Ultimate Frisbee practice, which i have daily and uses most of the energy i have left by that time of day. So i went for a run, probably 5-6 miles. All i can say is that i ran faster than i've ever run before by a long shot, and i feel fucking invincible. The fact that my gf dumped me, that i can't stand my best friend of a month ago at all anymore, that my grades are slipping, none of that matters. I feel fucking incredible

Thats a good motto for Nike, "who cares about life, just run!" or maybe just criminals who steal? Or you could be like Forrest Gump and run for years cause his Jenny left him. *sniff* poor Forrest.

hell ya man more power to ya! sorry about your troubles, though you can sort that shit out later. enjoy the time while it lasts!

Yeah hasn't it been scientifically proven that exercise releases endorphins or something into the brain, making you feel good?]

Good shit!

ya it has, though a lot of the time i think unless you're doing uber exercise like i somehow was, the endorphins and the pain/fatigue cancel each other out more or less
so you feel tired, but good
here it was just fucking awesome

feels almost as good as sex, and i can do it by myself! (for those of you who after reading that instantly thought 'hey, sex doesn't take two people!': yes it does.)

I agree with you 907957%. I used to run every night on a treadmill. I was wondering if running on a treadmill is in any way less beneficial than outside? I mean, running outside you receive the mental benefits as well.. but if im going to enjoy nature.. i want to do it while walking so I can actually enjoy it.. not sweating, thinking i'm going to die and my appendix is going to pop out you know? not noticing the smell of the air, or Orchids or feeling of the breeze on my skin.. I dont think there is anything better than running at a fast pace w/ headphones to good music; turned up really loud .. Your right, after doing it for so long, you get this feeling that you can run forever, your not exhausted.. It's hard to explain.. but i know what you mean

i prefer what this guy is doing :

I've done that a few times on purpose. I don't think runner's high exists, I think you feel better after doing something better than you have done for a time. I run 3-5 miles a day and I beat my personal best then so be it.

Posted by Floorfiller on May-13-2004 19:47:

last night i went running while it was snowing. i listen to Ulrich Schnauss while i run...its very calming. you gotta go running when its snowing out...its the best. you're all alone doing what needs to be done...

Runner's high does exist, it has been scientifically proven by the medical establishment. When the body is taken far beyond what it can handle, the brain releases this natural morphine substance and is overflown with endorphins. It feels terrific and makes people happy and confident, similarly to other drugs (but healthier). Since this feeling is so great, exercise can be addictive and people that work out a lot and stop have trouble sleeping and even get depressed.

Like other drugs, you also build up a resistance to its effects. Generally the rush lasts about 15 minutes. Since the body will become used to your workout routine, in the long run you will have to work out harder to achieve this same feeling.

Same with me. My right knee is f'd. Stationary bike for me.

Posted by diffusion on Jun-19-2004 10:33:

what you experienced is known as endorfines, your body produces them when you have sex and when you work out, particularly cardio excersize... You get a surge of it when you're in the middle of the run and afterwards, you feel euphoric. This is scientific facts, no bullshit. (God wants us to have reproduce and look great cool)

That's why you actually get more energy from doing a good workout.

Posted by TranceMuzik02 on Jun-19-2004 13:07:

That's why they say exercise is good for anxiety and depression.

Posted by shanehanner on Jun-19-2004 18:19:

I know exactly what you mean, you feel unstopable, I remember running about 6 miles last month and IO could have kept going for 10-12, but about in the middle I got a high and felt like I was cumming, you know all the chills and good feelings that flow through your body, It brought a little bit of tears of happiness to my eyes, I dont know why it did, but it was great, and I felt like I could accomplish anything. I have gotten this about a dozenb times real good, but that one was the best.

good thread.

it only happens once i a while for me but i'll be running and all of a sudden (sometimes coinciding with the peak of a trance song i might be listening to at the time) my entire body just feels fluid and my stride is just perfect almost like i am bounding from one foot to the other....i stop thinking about how much effor i am putting into the run and just glide along...it's wonderful

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Sometimes when I get those really shitty days the only thing I can convince myself to do is go for a run. It's nice to only have your thoughts for company, and it really helps take your mind off all that other bullshit you have going on in your life at the moment.

And there is no greater feeling than finishing a hard run, cooling down and jumping in the shower. My day always starts out much better this way.

It was recently shown that humans produce cannabinoids (chemicals similar to substances found in cannabis, or pot) after an extended period of time running. I know running sure as hell makes me feel great, but "runner's high" is usually reserved for a specific feeling usually not experienced below something like 1 hour of consistent activity.
