Angry Wats up with Violence?

[LiNk]

Wat's up with violence? seriously, we are living in the 21st century where we are free to do mostly legal things, but what's up with the world lately, here in Oz and everywhere, can someone please explain to me the excentricies (sp?) of why people must pick fights, condone violent behaviour n other downright spastic n a little archaic (another sp?) behaviour or mannerisms.

It's getting pretty ridiculous, all you ever hear on the news is about someone killed, stabbed, punched to the ground, assalted, why? for a mobile, for $20, for not liking the look they gave them? Wat is up with society, 5 years ago was the world this crazy?

Has the world gone completely bonkers, and why do so many people blame it on alcohol? Like guns don't kill people, people do, the same should go with alcohol?

I seriously don't get the fascination of beating sumone up cause you can/ or are weaker than the rest? Like come on, if you wanna challange someone shouldn't you challange their intelligence than just how strong they are?

Living in the 21st Century, isn't it a little neanderthal to be fighting, come on like how B.C. (b4 christ) is that crap really... if you wanna fight go back in time n fight for the romans or something, go fight back in he days of troy or where kings ruled europe, chuck a robin hood n go make your own bow and arrow.

I still don't see why people must fight?

What are they really proving?

Pz... this same thread is in the Chill Out forum, but i thought i might get more answers in here from people that are from Australia, & i might not get that many QUALITY answers from the other forum.

What's wrong with the world today

Yep some people are just nasty! I got bullied all throughout school, it was supposed to be the 'best days of my life', but if that were the case I was in for a very shiity life. No wonder the Central Coast has one of the highest suicide rates in the state!

I do however believe that generally people are ok, and I am always willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, in doing this it gives some people a better faith in the world and hopefully they will no be so nasty to one another.

I am pretty much an optimist and lurving it!

Peace Out

conflict/violence is what society grows and changes from tho...it's a basic part of the human condition....it's not nice, but life isn't meant to be all nice all the time - imho, a world with no conflict would be a pretty boring one *shrug*

Chookie...

Sorry to hear that u got bullied.. .thats another topic that shits me... Grrr...

Beemer...

So you mean natural selection is kicking in with violence in this generation or day in age?

conflict needn't resort to violence.
if it needed to, your last statement is a pretty sick one

you disregard the human cycle bass.
karma. we don't all have the same psyche (sp)
where much is influenced of course, by our upbringing,
environment, events in the course of our lives. in terms of violence, a great deal has to do with power. feeling powerful, where ppl may have felt helpless in their childhood or life really. take rape for example. rarely is it about the sexual experience, its about the sense of dominance and control. something they lacked due to maybe being beat up as a child, or having a repressed upbringing.

i'm not condoning the behaviour, but the human psyche is a complicatd one. and i do believe it does have some cylic kind of reasoning.

y is it that bin laden ain't so happy?
y is it that that man down the street beats up his kids?
y is is that mj touches lil kids?

u get the drift

Regarding that link, the story is very one-sided. The way it reads, there was probably an argument or dispute inside the pub, which continued later outside. I highly doubt that the shearer is as innocent as the story makes him out to be.

If it bleeds, it leads.

Yes. 5000 years ago the world was just as crazy.

People blame alcohol because it's easy.

Does this really happen? Purely random violence isn't as common as the news (particularly news like the Murdoch press) would have you believe. There is a statistic somewhere (not going to give a figure because I'd be making it up) that in a large majority of crimes, the perpetrator is already known to the victim.

Not really. People have always fought and always will. I don't see us evolving into peaceful sentient beings any time soon.

As we all know, they're not proving anything. A lot of this really depends on what kind of fighting you're referring to. Do you mean fighting in the sense of nation vs nation, violence on the street, thug life, sibling rivalry? Different types of violence are caused by different sets of factors. Unfortunately, the only common factor in all of them are the humans.

Webby... you are the man... my man... you have wisdom i can see...

i love posts like this that lead to believing that the human race really is out there.. that there are people that i could sit next to and have an interesting conversation with.

To this reply there hasn't been one crappy one which leads me to believe this is the best bunch of people i pretty much talk to all the time, also friends n reloz...

Btw im describing conflict on the basis that there are humans amongst us that would rather see a person bleeding to death n fighting for life, than just been defeated... going beyond the lines of reason n into madness... cause thats what it really is.

By having a social hierachial system in this world, its only natural there would be violence and tension. By this i mean take australia for example. We seperate people because of their tax brackets. People are at different levels no one is the same, so naturally when this occurs you have violence and conflict.

Thats just my opinion. I hate violence with a passion, i avoid it with a passion and more often than not preach love rather than violence. Dont get me wrong though, sometimes all some people need is a good bashing to wake up.

Posted by 00soups00 on May-24-2004 04:07:

i too am a definate hater of sensless violence.

it seems to me with particular reference to the idiot that police shot dead who was brandishing the two swords that people go about these techniques of holding and in his case obviously importing these weapons due to a desperate need of making money, or maybe mental deficiency, or both.

what i think sucks even more is that these police are being investigated by the ethical standards comission to see if they acted properly or not.

whilst it may not be said officially by police, people who go about acting this way are not needed or wanted in our society and are better of dead (imho).

Posted by eRRaTiK on May-24-2004 04:09:

violence = sense of control.

and power (amongst other things) is a natural human desire.

as a side note, many people are just mentally unstable. who is to blame? in many cases, the environment that they are raised in. for the philosphers amongst us - cause and effect.

/me beats up paulie with a rotten trout

I was thinking over lunch... do we as a society condone violence? For example rugby, the aim is to get to the other side by any means (in the rules) possible, even if it is force... hmmm..

I think we do in some ways. Especially the media, they show us all the violence and crime etc and I don't know about you guys but I am becoming de-sensitised by what I see and end up not really caring as much as I should.
In terms of sport etc I think it's starting to beome a bit better, but I don't really know cos I hate footy

I also think that kids these days are more violent and out of control and personally I think they are little shits!

Yes... its true, we are coming to realise that that its becoming the norm, and it shouldn't be like that, but unfortunately thats how things shape up.

And little shits... hmmm.. i can vouch for that... funny thing is i was a teen once but i didn't act like a complete twat when i was that young...

Posted by webmeister on May-24-2004 05:26:

I'd suggest we probably were all little shits when we were younger. We were just too busy thinking we were looking cool to notice.

It's all about perception I guess

Lolz

sorry, i read your post in COR and didn't see the link, so i thought it was just a random thought from you.

There seems to be quite alot of them nowadays though - Liverpool Westfields on a Thursday night OR John St. Cabramatta 3:30pm - those places are usually the most populated

I don't think these places are necessarily more dangerous than say Kings Cross in the 1970s, or the Waterloo Push in the 1860s, or any other dodgy area. Not disagreeing that they're bad areas (they are, I know!), but I don't think they're worse areas than any other in history...

it's true.

generally speaking, it's the negative things that equates to $$$ these days (ie. makes the news/press).

and yes this has filtered into sport, a lot of time the sportsperson makes (more of) their money not out of the game they play but out of the opportunities created when they can sell their stories, etc.

Yo man my mate hangs out at these places. Especially John Street at 3.30pm cruisin in his Supra trying to impress them chicks who just finished school for the day!

Posted by MrSquirrel on May-24-2004 09:30:

Blame it on the US.

I found oz to be considerably less violent and less de-sensitized to it than here in the States. You guys are still hearing about the stabbings and beatings etc. on the news....in the big cities here, murders are just a side note on the local news, and only murder cases like OJ Simpson get any national coverage.

So, you have my permission to blame all of australia's recent problems on the USA. Because for most cases, it is the truth

MrS

Edit: As an example, the city of Chicago which has a population of 3 million, had 599 murders in 2003. As a comparison, the number of reported homicides in all of NSW in 2003 was 91. Food for thought....

Posted by webmeister on May-24-2004 09:53:

Just like the first time you watch Bowling for Columbine, and each country's murder rate appears on-screen...

If you actually research into some crime statistics, you'll find that rates for most crimes have actually declined over the last 10 years. We are still the worst nation in the world for car theft though...

Violence is a tool of oppression.

my brother went to a party a week or so ago (he's 16) and some dude called a few of his friends who ended up crashing the party, trashing what was a very expensive house (think holes in walls) and causing enough damage to send the father and the 16yo boy whose party it was in an ambulance to hospital. Apparently these guys jumped the back fence and jumped on a train to go crash some other party, too bad the police rocked up too late, meanwhile they gave my brothers mate a a fine for underage drinking out the front after he, goes "mayb you should worry about whats going on inside more", i guess the cops found out he was right after all.
