I dunno whether it was Lawler, or what...but I just wasn't feeling it. I left around 4:30am

I'm with Jeff on this. If you're right Pete, then I'm glad I was at home sleeping!

no way!

last time when he was here i was disapointed, this time lawler was relentless and just kept laying down one sick track after another, and the crowd was great as well, even tho half of them were outside smoking :P

I was too tired to stay for more than a couple hours of his set, but I found it really enjoyable- not as 'dirty' as i would have liked, but I can't complain. I prefered his set at guv, (not the last time he was here but the time before), but I liked last night more than the last time her was, more likley b/c i found the vibe at the system 5 ear to be really aggressive. PPl were in good spirits, it wasn't as packed as last time.

matty played well up in the front room. i find the layout a little distressing tho- keeping ppl in the front room for the earlier portion of the night makes sense (so the club looks more jumpin' rather than having ppl scattered all pover a big space), however, keeping ppl in one room and then 'releasing' them into the mainroom sort of makes the front room seem like a weird holding pen, and ppl don't seem to want to come back, regardless of what music is being played. It also still feels unfinished b/c of the white walls. I wish they would paint the room and turn the lights down just a little bit (makes sense to keep it brighter in the front- bank machine transaction, ppl looking for coatcheck tags etc.) I do for the most part think the renovataions done last winter look great and make sense system feels like home to me.

i just got home from Lawler and Allegory and her boyfriend Michael's house party.

it was a great night! Lawler spun an amazing set, but i definately think he was better last time. everyone is disagreeing with me, but i liked it better last time. alot more "huge" tunes, more acidic, more epic, etc.

this one was good, but the things that bugged me about the night was matt's colleridge REALLY slow opening set (what happend matt? you were soooooooo good last time!), steve's slow opening and the over abundance of classic house with cheese vocals at the end. i know that's a Lawler trademark, and I do like it, but i think he just over did it this time.

i got ANOTHER Lawler shirt from John!! thanks so much man, these shirts are like my prized posessions now! i like this shirt a lot better than the other one though! it says "Steve Lawler" on the back with big letters, the other one didn't. both awesome shirts tho!!

thanks again to Allegory, and all the other people I met at the after party! i'd love to party with you guys again.

and what happend at the end there? first Lawler stopped spinning for about 2 mins, came back one with one more track, and stopped at 6.15?

by the way, what was the song he played after "stupid disco"? (baby make your move, step out from the line, touch me one more time, come on tell me)

the lyrics were something like "count on me" or "come to me" or something

"count on meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
count on me!"

loop x100

i've heard it before and am dying to know the name!!

Hmm..wasn't there, but maybe it was Thomas Bangalter - Call on me?

Posted by DigitalMP on Jun-05-2004 18:02:

that brings me to a question that, after pondering for the last two months, I'm certain isn't stupid.

Why does every Stupidisco track I DL sound EXACTLY like the Clamaran remix of Call On Me?

Is that the remix of Steve Winwood's track that I heard Mark Oliver play one night? That tune rocks, and if it's Thomas Bangalter, that makes total sense. He blew me away!

Steve Lawler was unfuckingbelievable last night. Once again Steve really outdid himself with yet another unforgettable set that reaffirmed all of my thoughts and opinions of Steve Lawler. IMO he is still far and away the best house DJ out there. I dont care what anyone says, no one comes close to him, in my eyes he is the undisputed King of House Music. END OF DISCUSSION!

I enjoyed Steve's set last night even more than the legendary 7 hour monster marathon set he threw down here in March. I wasnt sure if Steve could outdo that performance but I should have known that he would. Every time I have gone out to hear Steve play out I have found myself walking away from the party thinking to myself WOW that was his best set yet, I can't see him or anyone else topping that set anytime soon as it was that good. And then in predictable fashion Steve Lawler comes back and outdoes himself, raiseing the the bar a little higher with a set that was even better than the last.

Steve hit the decks at around 1:30 last night and for the next 5 hours or so he proceeded to fuck shit up good and proper, like only Lawler knows how to do. Steve assaulted us with his often imitated but never duplicated blend of raw and dirty, sexually super-charged energetic house music.

I dont know what it is but there is something special about the music Steve plays that just seems to bring out the best in a party. When Steve is ON you just know that the VIBE in the club he is spinning is going to be OFF THE CHARTS and last night happened to be a perfect example of that. His sound is all about partying your ass of, getting down and dirty on the dancefloor. You just cant help but shake your ass or jump around like a possessed madman to his funky ass shakin pimped up to fuck house music.

From the moment he put on his first record to his final tune of the night he had the club GOING OFF to his VIBED UP HOUSE MUSIC. All of the elements that one would expect to find in classic set from Steve Lawler were present last night. Loads of the freshest most upfront house music on the planet, plenty of sexed up vocal tracks, dark twisted drums, acid and electro infused house music, big chunky funky as fuck rolling house music, some techno, and those massive big room house tunes that would blow the roof off any club in the world were ever present last night.

Even the fact that I felt the night finished a little too abruptly couldnt put a damper on my night. That was one of the best nights of music i've ever heard in this city.

ps. VIVA LA HOUSE MUSIC!!!

Cool

Overall I liked his set.. at times he was losing me, but I heard he wasn't in the greatest mood that night. Great seeing all that were there and meeting a few people as well.. though there was a lot less familiar people than I thought there would be
I hope to hit a couple of good parties before I disappear..

As perusual Matt Vagrant threw down a great set in the front room. Although I am not really comfortable dancing in the stark bright frontroom I enjoyed every second of Matt's set and Deep Grove always ALWAYS impresses me. Lawler was alot of fun but I was really tired and I found the beats were not quite as dirty as I would have liked them to be. I did like the vibe in the crowd alot more than when he he was here in March though. Very friendly crowd, more room to dance and no bottom feeder sleazeballs trying to prey on women left alone on the dancefloor. Gotta say I love the new no smoking rule. Seemed like all were abiding with things and it didn't hurt the club one bit.

All in all it was a great night..just wish I had a bit more energy to enjoy more of it.

Posted by cono_sur on Jun-06-2004 17:33:

I had good time! Lawler threw down a pretty good set, but I personally liked his set the last time he spun at Guv much more than this one...

Good vibe the whole night. Not sure how much I like the new anti-smoking law. It felt different. Most people were adibing by the new rules. The place also didn't seem as packed as on some other nights (possibly because they were outside smoking).

Left a little after 5 cuz my legs had had it.

Not a huge TA turnout, but great seeing everyone that did show up. See you all in July.

J.
