Computer ON or OFF?

Im just wondering weather you people always leave you pc ON or OFF when ur not using it.I turn my pc off when im not using it...i reamber leaving my computer on all the time when i was using dial up and leave it on over night so shit would download over night.

SOme one once told me you waste less electricity if you leave your pc on all the time rather than turning it on and off Im trying to save electricity cause here in tx our light bill is kinda high.

mines probably only been down like 5 times in the last 3 years due to thunderstorms. Its always on and more convenient for me. I keep the one upstairs off because its less used than this one.

Of course it used more electricity if its always on because if you shut it off there is no electricity being used. If you don't use your computer lots then turn it off. If you really want to conserve electricity then turn it off.

Maybe try an experiment. Turn it off each night for a month. Then do one month with it on. Do your normal routine. Then see the difference in price and decide for yourself if its worth it.

Mine is on all the time. If i know im not coming home one night i'll turn it off unless im downloading something.

why would you turn your computer off?

thats like buying a dog and sticking him in a cage all day long.

unnecessary electrical consumption and overheating, it seems to be 'the thing to do' for some people, but mine wouldn't have lasted as long as it has had i left it to burn out more often

ah, yes, i suppose that if i were worried about burning something out, i would shut it off.

Turn it on when I wake up, shut it down when I go to sleep. That's all. And that's because it makes noise as hell, so, at night, he rests too.

If you leave it on all the time it will of course use more electricity, but you don't have to wait for it to boot up.

Turning it on and off will shorten the lifespan of the computer due to the heating and cooling (expanding and contraction) of components. Most people however don't use a computer for it's intended maximum lifespan anyway so do whatevers best for you.

Mines always on, but its all good, its a laptop so only uses 75 watts of power, plus the thing is silent, so at night you can't hear it and its pumping internet radio out through my stereo all night, its awesome waking upto trance.

mine sounds like an airplane's reactor all the time

i used to leave it on at night sometimes, left it once for 2 or 3 days, but then it started to overheat and turn off by itself. now i can't do anything CPU intensive, like playing a game for more than 5 minutes or.. defragging the drive

mines always on............due to leeching on p2p

PC. i bought a kit from Tigerdirect.com for like 600. not too bad.

Posted by noikeee on Jun-27-2004 22:56:

ah that explains something, ppl around here say that you can leave a PC running for like a week without problem, it just may become a little bit slow, but it can fuck up a laptop. obviously i didn't know of that before of wrecking it

Posted by SilentEagle on Jun-27-2004 23:07:

Tend to turn it off whenever I wont be using it for over two hours.

Posted by ASOT100 on Jun-27-2004 23:13:

i leave it on no matter what

don't electrical appliances still consume electricity when they're turned off but still plugged in, I was at the movies last fri and they show random crap up on the screen before the movie and one of the facts was that if you unplugged ur tv when u weren't watchin it, u'd save x amount of electricity, my friend and I were like wth who the hell would do that

ah, yes, i will never have a laptop as my main computer. overheat too easy, and they're a bitch to upgrade.

Posted by KilldaDJ on Jun-27-2004 23:45:

i just leave it on, it takes like half an hour to start up because of all the scandisks and anti virus shit etc takes forever to load windows etc

Posted by Streakfury on Jun-27-2004 23:48:

I think the longest I've left my computer on for is about 3 days. It's on all day every day, but I usually turn it off at night. The last couple of nights have been an exception though.

quote:
Current Uptime: 2 Days, 11 Hours, 29 Minutes, 53 Seconds

Not bad, but it does slow down a bit after about 16 hours of use.

Posted by DannyO on Jun-27-2004 23:55:

Just so people know, I've had my laptop for about 6 months, its been on nearly the entire time, I don't get any slow downs, the fan runs at the speed it needs to cool it down, but it rarely comes on since my CPU consumption is about 5% normally (unless playing a game or using an intense program), so, so far so good, had 0 hardware problems, only problems are Winblows XP, but this might not be true for all laptops so be carefull anyway laptop owners.

Posted by Dmatrox on Jun-28-2004 00:11:

off when not using. it gets hot in here when its on all the time. sometimes its on when im downloading

Posted by Nautilus on Jun-28-2004 00:12:

On weekdays I turn it on after I get home from work and turn it off before I go to sleep. On weekends I turn it on when I get up and turn it off before I go to sleep.
