Confused spinning a record on your finger like tiesto does..

hi

i've seen it live and in some videos, he takes a record puts it on his finger and spins it around for some time at (relatively) great speed..... soooo i tried to do that but it simply doesnt work.

is it that he has just super-slim fingers where he puts the record and spins it? because mine are definitely too big..

or is there some trick like he uses a stick or a cigarette filter(i tried that but it doesnt work well or at all)?

any ideas? thanks very much

Okay, I think the whole Superstar DJ worship thing is going a bit overboard... Maybe you should concentrate more on the music

I learned by doing it with the big rubber anti-slip mats whilst I was bored.

Practice!

hey, it's all about appearances -- music has NOTHING to do with the DJ business

spinning as in putting the record on your finger and then rotating it while mantaining it on the finger (without it falling down that is)

it just looks so cool........

those of you who actually replied in a mannerly fashion, could you please give some details on how you achieved to do it?

because I have no idea how to start.. my fingers are to damn big

Posted by on Jul-13-2004 01:40:

regardless of how "cool" it looks... its not something I wanna do with my records that I have spent FAR to much money on, to have one go crashing to the floor, or onto my TT's or some stupid thing...

Posted by cryo on Jul-13-2004 05:50:

i think you should just stick to doing when your playing basketball...

Posted by idoru on Jul-13-2004 06:51:

A couple of people mentioned they didn't know how he was spinning it, or maybe I just misread it, but...

If you watch the TiC DVD, I forget which part, but he takes a vinyl off and spins it without putting any effort into it. He just puts it on his finger, and spins the side.

dude that's lame... i once saw some guy spin it vertically not horizontally like in the pic...
now THAT's impressive!

Posted by beats and beeps on Jul-13-2004 16:37:

What kind of phones is tiesto using in that pic?? I cant tell what brand from that shot...if anything from the look of them i'd have to guess stantons???

Posted by dj chex on Jul-13-2004 16:43:

Tiesto is using POS stanton dj-2000 headphones. Just because he's using them doesn't make em good.

Posted by beats and beeps on Jul-13-2004 16:57:

haha, dont worry i wasnt by any means saying that those phones were any good...i didnt even say tiesto was good...

If you want to do that then just make sure you get some of the skin from your fingertip in the hole. Then spin... practice a bit, it really isn't that hard.
If that's what you want to do then do it, don't let other people control who you are, if you do that then you will never succeed as a DJ.

DJing is as much about personality as anything else. And to me, the fact that you noticed what other DJs do (Not just spinning) shows that you have an attention for details and don't mind asking questions.

Old Chinese saying regarding the asking of questions...
Better to look stupid for five minutes than to be stupid for the rest of your life.

Only time these things go wrong if you take the credit for ideas that aren't yours. But just do what feels right and enjoy.

The advanced version of this is as follows:

Spin it on your finger, hold it above the spinning platter and drop it (while its still spinning) so it lands straight on the spindle first attempt..
Takes loadsa practice.

Caution: Dont practice with your favourite records- i broke a few years ago when learning this, from them missing and hitting the tonearm etc...

Especially, if you do it with those thick promos/test pressings.

I can spin a recond with my dick

Posted by amartinathome on Nov-22-2004 14:50:

I can't believe I just wasted 120 seconds of my life reading this thread.

Maybe spinning records on your finger is covered in one of those cheezie "How to DJ" DVD's. You can really learn a lot from those, like how to hook up a turntable (a red and white wire, how confusing), move the crossfader (this is an advanced move). Why isn't there one of those "DJing for Dummies" bookes yet (you know the yellow ones)? A must for every DJ on my Christmas list.

Shoot me now please.
