Computer Advice

I really need to break down and buy myself a new computer. Im going to have some extra money coming up, but I really dont want to spend a fortune on one either. I just want something thats good for surfing the web and one that has a decent size HD for MP3s and porn..JK about the porn.. hahah

are Dells any good? what about buying a computer from ebay? i only want to spend about 450 max...for now...i'll upgrade later if i have the money.

thanks for any advice.

hmmm....i've got a dell right now. i'm not the hugest computer dork, but i think it has like 655 MB of RAM and 40 GB of memory. it works fine for what you want, but i didn't get it for 450. can you even get computers for that cheap nowadays? i think this one was like 650-700...don't remember to be honest...

maybe she means 450 for just the pc? without monitor, keyboard, mouse and all that stuff..id so you can get a dell pc for around 350

ah...yeah i just got a whole new everything...

Posted by Slylee on Sep-20-2004 16:11:

well that's why i was thinking maybe ebay...i'm sure a lot of people build computers and sell them online (i used to know someone who made a living that way).

or what about buying one from someone who just doesn't need it any more and puts it on ebay? i saw one listed (dell) that was only a year old and barely used (as stated by the seller) for like under $400. i don't care if it's been used or if it's a year or 2 old.

Posted by Slylee on Sep-20-2004 16:16:

no i meant like the whole package...lol is that being unrealistic?

ok what's the least amount of money i can spend on a decent computer?

Posted by Floorfiller on Sep-20-2004 16:17:

well...i would say that ebay would probably be the best way to find something in that price range. i don't know though...i'm always really hesitant to buy stuff like computers off ebay...that's a lot of money to entrust to someone you don't know ya know?

forget the whole thing, wtf is wrong with teh monitor? and the keyboard and mouse nevar go wrong, and funk speakers.

but you can usually build a cheap ass one by piecing it together. If you don't really need a hyper fast new processor just get like a 2 ghertzfeld processor.

i just went on pricewatch and pieced this one together for $345

Athlon XP 2600 w/ MB, 512 ram, 160 gig hard drive, ATI RADEON 9550 128MB, cheap soundcard (soundblaster), and a wierd ass case.

then tack on a monitor, and just buy a mouse and keyboard at like best buy since those cheap. then you just mount.....hehe, mount.....evertything in your case turn on, install windows.....and BAM. your set.

or pay someone to do it ....

Dell's cheapest model is $499. But if you go to something that's $599+ it's free shipping, so you're better off that way since shipping is expensive.

It depends on what you want. I wouldn't use Dell because they change parts a lot. You never know what you'll get. I work for a computer company and we build pc's. I might be able to get you a deal, but I would need to know what you want. They give me an employee discount and all.

There's always something. I might go to the Fevah party on Saturday @ the Gothic. Deepsky and a bunch of others. Friday? Maybe Syn. I am playing at Syn tonight, if you feel like stopping by. A friend and I tag 10-12. It's usually pretty chill on Monday's though. Still fun, but not anywhere near crowded. Cheap drinks though.

boomer, i really don't want to be bothered with buying a computer piece by piece and then having someone put it together. i know it's probably a lot cheaper, but i'm far from a computer geek and wouldn't know where to start...your message was like chinese to me. lol

nite-mer i'll PM you.

of course i want a kick ass system, but right now, i just want the bare minimum. i'll upgrade later to a nicer monitor and stuff.

i understand perfectly what you are asking for.. the biggest question in your mind is "QUANTITY vs QUALITY" .. what would you choose ?? dell or self - built?? to tell you the truth, both are the same thing, it's just that dell puts their name on it, and everyone "believes" that it is better than self-built.

if there is a local shop that does custom builds for you, then you can go there .. would you rather buy a regular phone modem for $20(dell) or $7(a local company) which practically does the same thing ??

the only BIGGEST difference between dell and custom computers are that custom computers offer A LOT of space for expansion (such as PCI slots for more sound cards, video cards, Ethernet cards, etc cards that may come out) .. dell gives you a limited amount of space .. also custom computers are more flashy, like those neon lights on the side, if you like that, and also offer a coolant agent inside your computer, to prevent your computer from overburning .. dell does not have that, because they want your computer to overburn, so you can buy their extended warranty .. hmmm...

but that's just my point ..

QUALITY vs QUANTITY ...

Posted by Slylee on Sep-20-2004 19:20:

^^^ well after you put it all that way, then i'd rather get the self built kind, because even though i'm trying not to spend a lot of money on one now, i definitely want to upgrade later. i like the colorful cases and all that stuff you mentioned too

thanks.
