Canada is like wanna be European

just a thought

Posted by NYCTrancefan on Sep-21-2004 15:32:

No Canada is an independent nation that follows its own path, we may not like it but that is what it is. Looking back on the Iraq conflict would you blame them for not blindly following us down that path. Typical of us Americans to start labelling and attacking other nations with sarcastic names yet I wonder why Bush cannot get help from anyone new or significant in global politics when it comes to Iraq. Maybe "Old Europe" has just a little grudge, I certainly wouldn't help someone who blasted me as weak, spineless, guttless, traitor, etc, etc.

You are right somewhat, Canada is such a multicultural nation that the people here of european descent tend to act more european than other racially european nations i.e. Australia, America. Canadiens just don't have a common identity or culture. In America and Australia they really left their european culture behind and created their own unique identity. But Canada has always been stuck between the Frank and (Angle-Saxon)Germanic identities.

I'm not saying America is not multicultural but they us a melting pot ideal into the American culture that Canada doesn't.

More specifically, the Quebecois are wannabe French. I think that's a bit more accurate.

Posted by hardcore trancer on Sep-22-2004 03:34:

Hey as long as we are not American wannabe's Iam happy.

they are french , big difference there

Posted by DrUg_Tit0 on Sep-22-2004 12:03:

Well, what should they be like? 51st US state?

Posted by imokruok on Sep-22-2004 12:12:

We'll take Alberta and maybe BC. States number 51 and 52.

Posted by josh4 on Sep-22-2004 15:05:

America would never take another state unless there was no doubt they'd consider themselves Americans before anything else. Example: Puerto Rico

you can have them. BC is not doing well and Alberta is riding on the high oil prices, when its oil will disappear, nothing will be left.

I don't think Canada is wannabe European so much as Canadians want to differentiate themselves as much as possible from the US. (Cdn flags sewn onto backpacks?) And who can blame them considering the disparate ideologies? Canadians seem to have some insecurity about the uniqueness of their identity, which I think is unnecessary because they are so different. We break the world up into simplified chunks (Europe, North America, etc.) and end up excluding the possibility of cases that don't fit into any of the categories (Canada).

Italian explorer John Cabot reached Newfoundland in 1497, while French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the region in the 1500s. In the 1600s, French settlers, who became known as Acadians, were the first Europeans to settle permanently in Canada. Over time, they were joined by settlers from British Isles and Germany.

In 1535, two Aboriginal youths used the Huron-Iroquois word "Kanata" which means "village" or "settlement" to tell Jacques Cartier the way to Stadacona (site of present-day Quebec city). Cartier used "Canada" to refer not only to Stadacona, but also to the entire area subject to Donnacona, Chief of Stadaconna.

Canadian are not wanna be Europeans, part of them is European, just like Americans

Canada has some similarities with europe, but it is soooo much that is not europe. Now i havent lived in the US, but i think that i still can say that there is a lot of differences between the two.

Canada is Canada and its cool

Wasn't there a referendum in Puerto Rico where they decided against becoming the 51st state?

I agree with you! I've lived in all 3 (numerous countries in Europe). Canada is awesome. It's not really like Europe because i believe the places i lived in in Europe (Ireland, England, Belgium) were much more free than Canada, the culture is too different to be able to compare it to Europe. However it's also not at all like the States in the sense that the cultural mix in Canada brought something which the cultural mix in the Sates doesn't have -- but then again I was living in Tennessee and to be honest, people over there were none too plussed about other races anyways.

Maybe i'm wrong though. When i was living in the states, the difference of culture wasn't that varied. Mainly Hispanics and African Americans.
In Canada, my friends are from pretty much everywhere, from Eastern Europe, to Asia, to Africa, to South America
I <3 Canada though hehe... but Europe is definitely lots of fun too!

Posted by BadBadNeil on Sep-23-2004 20:51:

If you wanted more cultural diversity in the States it would be best to be in the larger more culturally diverse cities equal in size with say a Toronto. Like you stated you probably won't get that in Tennessee, but perhaps NYC, Boston, Miami, Chicago, cities in Cali etc. Blacks and hispanics are the largest minorities so it makes sense that you see lots of them
