playing remixed pop songs in your set..

how do you guys feel about playing remixed pop songs in your set?
as long as the remix is wicked, do you play it? or do you think playing pop remixes/bootlegs...is cheesey??

Posted by DannyO on Nov-25-2004 00:25:

Well depends on the remix, I'll quite happily drop either Vengaboys - Kiss (Airscape Mix) or Madonna - What It Feels Like For A Girl (Above & Beyond Mix), screw who its done by, if a track is good, then its good, regardless of if its some pop trash shit.

also depends where you are playing, feel the crowd. If you are somewhere that likes more poppy stuff, playing dope remixes of pop songs can sometimes please the crowd and yourself as a dj at the same time. And like Danny O said, if the song is good, play it. I have remixes of Britney, Madonna, Christina, etc. on vinyl that are good tracks w/ or w/o the vocals.

As Danny said.....if its good its good. Nuff said

Most underage crowds love all the pop n hip-hop stuff

Posted by D-res on Nov-25-2004 06:57:

spin what you like man. although its important to play to the crowd

Posted by tu_face on Nov-25-2004 12:07:

so long as it is good, and you think the crowd will dig it, then it doesn't matter about anything else.

Vengaboys - Kiss (Airscape remix) kicks serious ass. No shame in dropping it.

Posted by Desty Nova on Nov-25-2004 19:30:

if you're playing a set at a club and nobody is paying attention playing top 40 remixes is what just about what every DJ does... I have a cd with top 40 Trance vocal samples (i.e ATB's Long Way Home) run throuh an FX processor but I think that playing the same stupid crap on T.V and the Radio is wasting everyone's time and is a disgrace to everything that House Music stands forIf you want get their attention drop some fat basslines but thats just me ....

Posted by djxtension on Nov-25-2004 20:47:

Well, it has been said before: either play it because the crowd wants it, or because it's good.

Not at all. I play Britney Spears - Everytime (Above & Beyond Remix) and Dido - Sand in my Shoes (Above & Beyond UV Remix). Both mixes rock.

Britney Spears- Breathe On Me (Holden Vocal Mix) has been on my list lately. Lovin' the track and people seem to respond to it well.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Nov-26-2004 08:59:

All well and good but this is definately where reading the crowd comes into play. Agreed, you can't drop any old shit and it has to be well done but you have to know the crowd or the effects may be catastrophic.
Some of the above mixes are well done although I would have to say that it would be a cold day in hell before you got me to play any Britney.

Cheers
Nem

Posted by T-Soma on Nov-26-2004 11:35:

could this be becoming a thread where people post their favourite pop remixes?

Dont' worry, I know it. But it's more down to the fact that I'm not big on vocals really. I think I have one or two in my box tops. The amount that I get sent is another story.

Cheers

i've been big into 80's remixes lately... they fit nicely with the electro flavor that progressive has taken this year

What do you mean by pop exactly? Britney and the other pop tarts? U2 and Sting? Nirvana? I'd have no problem mixing from the rock groups, but if it's a bubbly, fake breasted pop-tart, it better be a damn good remix.

Posted by DjArTiN! on Nov-26-2004 23:47:

Britney Spears - Everytime (Above and Beyond Remix) I have to admit it's a crazy tune. The other remixes are good too like the Valentine Remix and the Dr. Octavo's Translucent Mixshow Edit.

TIBAL SPEARS-unkown artist?-tribal remix of toxic...is wicked but it makes me feel silly playing britney, but the remix is so nice...

ive been playin holden's vocal and dub mix of breathe on me. its a great track

Confused everyday Junglist

Pop/rock + Trance = the EVIL

Posted by Inertia on Nov-30-2004 03:27:

i am in love with the holden dub of breathe on me... but anyways.

em. well, it depends on the crowd, etc. but another factor for me is... well, basically, when and how many. for instance, i hear tiefschwarz did a wicked remix of Milkshake. but if i spun Breather on Me, i would feel pretty weird spinning another pop remix in the same set. perhaps that's just me being weird.

but having a few top40 friendly tracks that are real good too is always a good idea. sure, we all want to be spinning the experimental, underground stuff, but not every crowd likes that, or dance music at all. so having these may make an otherwise sucky night tolerable.

Kylie Minogue - I Believe In You (Skylark Remix)
Kylie Minogue - I Believe In You (Mylo Remix/Mylo Dub)
Evanescence - Hello (Gabriel & Dresden Bootleg)
Linkin' Park - Numb (Michael Feistel Intro Depth Remix/Michael Feistel Out of Words Dub)
Coldplay - God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Starkid & Danny Moore Bootleg)
Dido - Sand In My Shoes (Steve Lawler's We Love Ibiza Remix)

those wont harm you.. I think everybody loves them
