K, I guess I'm looking for older stuff then from the 80s, along the lines of Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys.

depeche mode - violator (1990)
new order - low-life (1985)
echo and the bunnymen - ocean rain (1984)
all classics in my book.
Also, if you're interested in Synthpop... check out music from the 80s Italo Disco scene. Artists like Den Harrow, Eddy Huntington, Roy (so many others) are all very much synth pop.
80's synth pop rocks, i love it.
Don`t forget to listen to:
A Flock of Seagulls!!!
One of the greatest Synth-Bands of the 80s!!!
Tracks like: Wishing, I ran, Space Age Lovesong, Telecommunication guided me on my long way into Trance-Music!!!!
Believe me, they were great!!
Maybe only their haircuts were greater............

Only here would I see someone compare Giorgio Moroder to Gouryella.
actually, european synth pop is tied closer to the classic sounds put out by old golden era of labels such as ZYX, BLANCO Y NEGRO, Hansa, Baby, etc etc.
