| Canadian Court Approves Same-Sex Marriage 1 hour, 20 minutes ago Add to My Yahoo! Top Stories - AP By BETH DUFF-BROWN, Associated Press Writer TORONTO - Canada's highest court said Thursday the government can redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, but it added that religious officials cannot be forced to perform unions against their beliefs. The ruling by the court in Ottawa brings to the final stages a long, bitter fight over whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry in Canada. Judges in six provinces and one territory have already overturned the traditional definition, allowing thousands of same-sex weddings. Canada would join Belgium and the Netherlands in allowing gay marriage if the government acts to make it legal nationwide. To pass in the House of Commons, the legislation needs the approval of about 44 of the 95 Liberal backbench members of Parliament to obtain a 155-vote majority. One top Liberal predicted the legislation should pass easily after its introduction, likely early next year. It already has the support of the 38-member Liberal cabinet and virtually all the 54 Bloc Quebecois and 19 New Democrat MPs. |

Im glad Canada has taken this step. Not only for people who wish to marry, but now they can recieve health care benefits from spouses and other related things.
yay canada.
now if only we woudl decriminalized weed.
As long as the majority of gay couples will adopt and raise kids, I support this.
Actually, it's not "officially legal" yet. All the Supreme Court has stated is that if the Federal Government were to pass a law to this effect, it would be constitutional. The legislation still has to be introduced and passed by the House of Commons.

It is great to live in a country that respects personal choice and freedom and chooses to be inclusive in respect to such.

| Originally posted by baystreetboi Personally, I think this can all be resolved quite easily. I don't support the idea of a "separate but equal" classification of civil unions for gay couples. Rather, I think the government should abandon the term altogether. If various religions want to maintain their definition of marriage, fine. But going forward, ANY couple, whether straight or gay should be able to be "married" (using whatever new term you want to describe it as) under the eyes of the law / government. Leave the term "marriage" to individual religions or churches to define as they see fit. |
You're grouping the christian churches together - which shouldn't be done.

Im happy and all but itsnt it wierd how we are supposedly a "liberal" country yet the common guy cant even enjoy a beer in most public areas for example? (among many others)
For a Liberal country we sure are conservative.
True but with first steps like this one and maybe the decriminalization of marijuana it will lead to that...
