My Newest Track! Ben Acosta - Turbulence
Hi SETA, welcome to the new year. To bring it in, I decided to share my very first PSY/GOA track to start off the New Year week. This was created in Fruity Looops Studio, with drum samples from Doru Malaia *thanks Jeff for the hookup*. For those few who've heard my tracks before, this one will be a lot more different. This is my first Goa/Psy song, instead of trancy breaks, this is pretty dark-yet-danceable, and I like it. Expect more, maybe not soon, but it will happen.
Originally the inspiration come when I was working with my friend who was experiementing with FLS, just throwing down random beats and samples, playing with the speech synth. He made this really sweet bassline to go along with some thick pads, and he randomly threw in some vomit. So I guess it was just my turn to experiment with basslines too. I I absolutely love this track and I i loved making it, and I hope whoever listens to it likes it as well.
Dispite it's (final) tag, it's still not done, I want the kick to go even deeper, and I feel at some places it didn't mix very well. Probably add some snares too, plus make the song a little longer. And of course, whatever you guys think I should change I'll consider. But for now I'm satisfied with it.
And please, if you DL it, please make a comment or about it. I take critism well, as long as it's constructive.
Well, without further adieu

just gave the track a listen. decent track. nothing spectacular but looks like your music production is headed in the right direction.
much like traffic as was mentioned.
Nice starter track. It's really dark. In it's current form I wouldn't categorize it as psy/goa... more like dark trance. Think Tiesto - Traffic. I notice that psy/goa really likes 16 beat hihats and the bassline is more driving. I really like the "vomit" loop. It went well with the eerie pad. The bassline needs more work though. What synth(s) did you use to create the bass? Maybe some variation every 32 beats in the bassline will spice it up a bit. I'm currently using poor headphones at work so I'll have to redownload the track from home but it seemed like the bass didn't have enough low end. The kick actually has more boom than the bass. Maybe consider adding a layer of sub bass to compliment the bassline you already have.
I felt the kick is a little weak. Kicks usually need a lot of compression. Consider trying 10:1 ratio for your kick. And maybe layer another kick on top of that one. A punchier kick to compliment the boomy kick yu already have.
P.S. Is Acosta really your last name?
Good track, dude!
My bad guys, I didn't mention before that it was my FIRST PSY/GOA track, not my first track ever
. This maybe my 2-3rd attempt at making a song people would actually play
. Sorry about that
planbrad, thanks for your opinion. This thread has a very bad bad bad view:reply ratio, thanks for repling and, shame to all who've DLed it, and have not replied.
Scottaculous, I think that's the correct classification, but I usually don't like putting labels on my songs. Thank you for the feedback, it means a lot. Please forgive me for not being so techincal with producing... I just don't like that part, putting ideas together rolling around in my head, and making it sound at least decent is pretty cool though. I glad you liked the 'VOMIT' loop, I'm still debating if I should make a verson without it, if I did it'd take a lot out of the song. The bass was a standard FLS sample, I just messed with it a little, added an appregio to it to make it crazy. The little melody I put was made with the 3x OSC, pretty basic and easy, and sounds decent to me.
I don't know much about compression, I did compress the whole song, but I used one of the FLS presets because I don't really like doing that techincal stuff. But the kick is my biggest problem right now, like you said more boom than bass... that must change, maybe I'll put some reverb or some small effect on it! But I'll look through my bag of samples to see what completes it better. But so far no good, and it's already 3 kicks in one.
BTW if we get enough productions from everyone, I think it'd be totally kick ass if we did a SETA's Unite Mix (Much like TA Unite Mix on the Live Sets download page).
Once again thanks for you guys for replying
EDIT: Scot, up Acosta is my real last name. A DJ friend even told me Ben Acosta sounds like a producers name
WTF my reply didint go through? Grrr damn u internet!
Ok first 1min 15sec or so i didnt really care for. I like the way it changes later on. Beat gets a bit monotonous, you need some work there. Whole track got that psy/chillout feel to it, not bad. Good first try keep it up.

Scott! Dude, if I can't find a punchier kick (one that blows air, as to one that rumbles the ground (boomier) right?) what do I do?

any of those VSTi's free?
Scotty, I take it that you produce as well. I was wondering what you use, and when are ya gonna put up one of your tracks?
I don't produce. I just read out of the Producers Forum.
Just kidding...
Hardware:
2.8ghz P4 1GB DDR Ram
Mackie HR824 Monitors
Mackie HRS120 Subwoofer
M-Audio Keystation 88 Pro Midi Controller
Universal Audio UAD-1 PCI Card for effects
Software:
Cubase SX as my main sequencer
Ableton Live 4 rewired into Cubase
Spectrasonics Trilogy - most of my bass sounds
Spectrasonics Atmosphere - pads and strings
Linplug RM IV - drums
NI Kontakt - Sampler
NI FM7 - lead & random sounds
NI Pro-53 - lead & random sounds
rgcAudio Z3ta+ - lead & random sounds
Sampletank 2.0 XL - I like to use the Piano and guitar samples so I can find the keys of tracks and new melodies.
I'm not really comfortable with any of my lead synths so I'm considering consolidating it all by getting a Virus TI Keyboard.
As for samples... I'll post something later.

Your studio sounds awesome
, are you planning for this to be a career?
BTW random question. By any chance do you have the remix or acapellas for BT's Force of Gravity? No one ever gives me a straight answer, and I've searched forever...

Not bad! Good to see you putting that fruity loops to use. I like the bass + instrument thing that comes in around 2:00. I'd experiment with some delays like on some of the higher pitch synth parts. The kick sounds like it has reverb on it, if it does I'd take it off because it ends up muddying up the rest of the sounds by lingering on too long. One other thing, I think the bass could use a high eq rolloff or at least a dip somewhere in the middle, sounds like there is too much mid/high in it in proportion to the low end. So just a few technical suggestions. Percussion is way improved from the last thing I heard, so get some more kick samples, and some VSTs for the next track. Keep it up man!
I finally got my new computer last week, so it might be time to fire up fruity again. Athlon 64 +3500, 2GB DDR, fast fast!! I've been doing everything so far on a PIII 800, ha.

The kick is 3 in 1, one of them was the last addition to the song before it went online. Like Scott said, it was more boom than a punch, I feel like it cancels out a lot of the low frequencies, and your the 2nd person that said the kick lasted too long (check out my thread in amatuer productions), so that's got to go. I've been looking for a good kick or tweaking the ones I have to fit, but so far no good, but that just maybe because I'm still pretty bad at the techincal part of producing. I'm still experimenting.
You know I actually remixed that, so it's not as bad as before?
I'm going to start making changes to my song ASAP. And get yo ass into producting too!
If I remember correctly you said you just got a new computer before the FLTA party! So what you waiting for sucka?
Rules on EQing...
1. If it sounds mouddy, cut some at 250Hz
2. If it sounds honky, cut some at 500Hz
3. Cut if you're trying to make things sound better.
4. Boost if you're trying to make things sound different.
5. You can't boost something that's not there in the first place.
Kick Drum - Bottom at 80 - 100Hz; hollowness at 400Hz, point at 3-5kHz
