HOLY ****, Gemini went NUTS.

Found this over at Skratchworx, haven't even read it yet, but check this, time for the hybrids.

quote:

I don't know if anyone expected this anytime soon, especially from Gemini, but here it is-the worlds first hybrid cd player/turntable. I will get the chance to try it in 9 days at the Namm show (and take pics/movies!!), but in the meantime here is the word from Gemini themselves......

"CDT-05 Pro CD Turntable
Worlds first analog/digital hybrid turntable/CD player

Since the advent of the CD format in the DJ realm, performance DJs have only dreamed of a solution that would combine the classic feel of a turntable with the ability to play both CDs and vinyl. With the release of the Gemini CDT-05, that dream has now become a reality, with the ability to play both vinyl, as well as to play CDs with the hands-on control of a full size direct drive platter. The CDT-05s sturdy aluminum platter is driven by a CPU-controlled high-torque direct drive motor, perfectly suited towards vinyl playback or CD manipulation. In both analog (vinyl) and digital (CD) modes, DJs are provided with a variable pitch control, with selectable ranges of 4, 8, 16, or 50 percent, along with pitch bend function as well as master tempo. Additionally, 3 DSP effects (Filter, Zoom, and Echo) with variable parameter and a forward/reverse switch can be accessed in either mode. During CD playback, the CDT-05 affords 3 hot starts, frame accurate cue, and seamless loop, for ultimate flexibility in the digital domain. The motor can also be disengaged, for DJs that prefer CD decks with a passive, non-motor driven platter. Vinyl DJs will appreciate the removable, virtually unskippable straight tonearm system (sold separately) as well as the versatility of having an all-in-one unit to move forward with the digital revolution, while preserving the legacy of vinyl.

Release Date: TBC
MSRP: TBC"

Once again-OH MY GOD.......

I applaud them for being the first to bring it to market. Really kind of a cool idea if you think about it.

*Edit* it's not much in the looks department though, is it? Guess they were going for practical?

Yup, it was only a matter of time for a hybrid deck, I was expecting one for the Namm show, but I thought Numark would be the first to come out, and that Gemini would be months behind, how wrong I was, this looks to be a very promising deck, having the model name CDT-05, my guess it shares the same motor as there other high end deck, whick is a 5kg motor , if this is what Gemini is bringing out, I wonder what the BIG players have to offer.

Posted by Tony Morello on Jan-11-2005 08:01:

things are starting to look promising

Posted by dj chex on Jan-11-2005 08:18:

Promising indeed. However, i still perfer my trusty 1200s and hopefully SSL.

Posted by T-Soma on Jan-11-2005 11:07:

so maybe gemini will no longer be the brand for a dj with a budget?

Posted by bass.exe on Jan-11-2005 11:11:

By Hybrid, do you mean that you can also play vinyls? if not the numark cdx already does this, even though it sucks.

EDIT
oops, I bothered to read the description again..answers my question. This looks pretty sweet.

Posted by tu_face on Jan-11-2005 11:47:

the cdx does not play vinyl. it just has a vinyl on the platter in order to get the same feel when scratching and cueing...

i would love to see if this thing is any good, looks like fun!

Posted by dj_lane on Jan-11-2005 13:11:

good idea, but it seems a bit weird.... it will most likely cost us over $1500

I'll say more when other people get to try this

Posted by tu_face on Jan-11-2005 14:41:

the big question is, will the pitch control be analogue when in turntable mode?

Posted by dukes on Jan-11-2005 14:52:

hmmm will take alot to convince me of this thing. merging the 2 pieces of kit can make for many possable things to go wrong.

and more to the point can you mix record into cd on the same deck?!?

Posted by DannyO on Jan-11-2005 15:43:

I dunno for sure, but it sounds like this thing might ship without the tonearm, so it is like a CDX, but has the option of adding on a tonearm for vinyl playback, cos it sounds like the straight arm is an option, but it could be that it ships with a S-shaped arm instead, who knows, I think this could be a good bit of kit, Gemini is capable of making something good, and I think now there starting to do that, as for the pitch control, I think that will still be analogue, but in afew days we will know for sure.

I'd seriously doubt it, but who knows? I'll be at NAM, so I'll check it out...

Sound intresting. Until I have a firsthand encounter with it, Im sceptical. It looks good on paper, but its performance and long term strengh have yet to be determined.

Posted by beats and beeps on Jan-11-2005 17:21:

We are getting there, but I'm guessing this thing will be expensive, and have various problems.

Shouldnt be too long untill we have a good one though.

Posted by Exodus17 on Jan-11-2005 17:37:

hey its about time someone came out with a hybrid deck... i figured vestax would have spit one out first along with all their other crazy designs... honestly, i think a hybrid deck is in more demand than one that tilts

looks pretty cool, cant wait to see how it handles... im a bit confused as to why gemini would make a vinyl/cd deck and have the tonearm sold seperately i guess its meant to be a cd deck first and for those who want vinyl capability get a tonearm and youre good to go...an S shaped arm would be nice rather than just a str8

well done gemini for being the first to build the obviously wanted

I really doubt it because they "The CDT-05s sturdy aluminum platter is driven by a CPU-controlled high-torque direct drive motor". It seems to me if you already are controlling the deck digitally that they would probobly keep it that way (since the slider is also digital during CD playback). It would be redundent to have both analog and digital controls but I know why you want it.

Posted by Quantized on Jan-11-2005 18:11:

heh looks sweet

im guessing everything on this tt will be digital, except the needle. I think pioneer and technics should team up and make one...would be awesome (but pricey).

+1

But before that happens lets see how well this one performs. I have faith in gemini, but since it is the first of its kind theres bound to be problems. Wait for the second generation.

pioneer and technics are the same company anyway arn't they? or at least one owns the other or something....

its missing the effects unit

Posted by nrjizer on Jan-11-2005 19:48:

Bleh, I don't like hybrids. I like every piece of my setup to do it's single assigned job and we'll leave it at that. It leaves me free to expand/swap for better parts, and if one thing goes down it doesn't take another down with it.

Even if Technics and Pioneer got together and put a CDJ-1000 into a M5G I wouldn't buy it.

Posted by raaven on Jan-11-2005 19:55:

what's the accuracy of the pitch in cd mode??

it better be good damnit!

looks interesting though. wouldn't mind playing around with it.

just wish it didn't look so toy like.

I think your getting Pioneer mixed up with Panasonic, Panasonic and Technics are the same company basically.

I think Pioneer has another company, but its a Home Theater company, called Elite or something.
