TA girls: Would you take the last name of your husband?

Pretty valid question I'd say. Would you take his family name or keep yours? If yes which name would your kids have? And then which name would your grandkids have?

HUH?????

SUB-valid question i'd say

Posted by dEsidEL on Mar-03-2005 23:58:

when i'm @ work, i'm seeing more and more female customers who are married retain their maiden name followed by their married name.

if i was a father i wouldn't mind having my kids use that as well .. ie. surname1-surname2.. how they choose to denote the surnames of their own children would be their choice ..

Posted by RandomGirl on Mar-03-2005 23:59:

I think I would want to hyphenate it.

My first born son will take my last name. There is no one in my family to carry on the name, and so I want to have it carried somehow. Any other children can have the hyphenated, or his. I suppose it would be something he and I would have to discuss at some point.

Common on now...it's spouse and they are spouslings...

A divorced judge once gave some great advise....keep your maiden name because nothing is guaranteed to last forever.

But the answer from this married person is:

maiden - married surname

Kid's definately get the same. Equal partners share everything and leave their egos at the door

I would probably want to hyphenate it.. i can't just drop my last name like that..

Posted by Jayx1 on Mar-04-2005 00:18:

In the name of tradition and family lineage i dont think i could marry a woman who wanted to drop my last name. Thousands of years of tradition should not go up in smoke just like that. If we hyphenate names what will happen in 2 or 3 generations? John Smith-Black-Jones-Brown???

no way! Its important to keep tradition and family name. Id maybe be willing to comprimise by having her keep her last name but definately not with the kids. No hyphens or funny stuff there.

Contrary to "progressive" thinking there is nothing wrong with tradition.

But he doesn't have the appropriate chromosome

I suppose you have a reasonable demand there about No hyphens with the kids.

But I'm curious...why are you asking the question Jayx1...cud it be that you expect to get married some day? Who's the ideal lucky girl...don't tell me it's the pad commercial girl

ahahah

i was talking about it with a friend the other day. He said it has become a real hot issue with marrying couples now. A lot of guys are breaking up with their gfs over it.

My buddy Clinty who is a Catholic Philipino... i recall us having this discussion.

To him the idea that a girl NOT assume his last name was incredibly riddiculous and it was a HUGE big deal going aginst all tradition and blah blah blah and im sorry if she was keeping her last name, then he said there was no way in hell they were ever getting married.

i remember i was playing devil' advocate in this arguement and i was having alot of fuN!

It was certainly something he felt intensely about and would never budge an inch on

Wow...if a guy breaks up over that then he must have not loved her at all.
I can tell you we've never had this issue come up. Ever.

I have some advise for those contemplating or just newly married....

The trick to marriage...is to never fall out of love at the same time.

Remember this, and you'll be happily ever after for a long time.

so, she was the most perfect girl ever, she was smart, good looking, very nice, everyone including you loved her. You are planning on getting married and everything is great. She had one demand tho, she want the family to have her surname. Would you brake up then?

Posted by Spyder on Mar-04-2005 00:48:

i'm traditional ... so ya i would take his name...

These kinda examples I find are very hard to properly consider... its never so black and white... and there'll be massive discussions on the issue if its REALLY IS such a big deal...

also, i throw out there... if Jayx1 or whoever refuses to budge NO MATTER WHUT on this issue, is the girl really willing to throw it all away too (bc if the bf wont budge, thats whuts happening) Both ppl really could be seen as causing the demise of the relationship

This is totally a 2way street and both parties need to figure out whuts gonna work for them!

it would definately be a contentious issue. Not just with me but my family as well.

Actually, I see it as only one way for this to work. Both have to compromise. That's why her keeping the maiden name and then hyphenate his surname is the best compromise. If neither are willing to budge...then this relationship will never last.
