Samsung Elec Unveils 7-Megapixel Camera Phone

Wed Mar 9, 3:28 AM ET

Technology - Reuters

SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. unveiled the world's first mobile phone with a powerful 7-megapixel camera on Wednesday, providing a potential competitive threat to manufacturers of digital cameras.

Samsung has been stepping up development of increasingly sophisticated phones for high-end users looking to access games, music and movies on their handsets. It launched the world's first 5-megapixel phone in October.

But while top digital camera makers such as Japan's Canon Inc. and Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites). are likely to see the model as a new threat, its popularity may depend on how much of an improvement the camera can deliver over existing units.

There is a growing consensus among consumers that 3 or 4 megapixels, the measure of how many million picture elements are captured in a digital snapshot, are enough for a decent shot.

Some of the best-selling digital cameras feature 4 or 5 megapixels.

The new phone, which also has an MP3 player and business card reader, would go on sale as early as the first half, though a price had yet to be set, Samsung said in a statement.

Samsung aims to sell 100 million mobile phones this year, up 16 percent from 86 million sold last year.

The SCH-V770 phone will make its international debut at CeBIT, the world's biggest tech and telecoms trade show, in Hanover, Germany on Thursday.

Shares in Samsung, Asia's most valuable technology company with a market value of $81 billion, ended down 0.4 percent at 500,000 won, versus a 0.85 percent rise in the broader market.

Nice, but how long until the major Canadian mobile players adopts this phone? Assuming the phone supports CDMA, this could be a real perk for Virgin mobile once they launch here! (They are reselling Bell's network).

I'm sooo going to buy one this summer! That camera is nothing but pure hotness! And the scary thing is it's the same price as my Powershot G2 was a few years back.

It's the same price I bought my digital rebel for about half a year ago...but I don't think I'm going to upgrade now...if anything I might get the new lens that Canon came out with for the EOS D20...it looks pretty slick

The G2 is a little too big and bulky for the general purpose camera I originally intended it to be. I have access to the amazing and compact S400; however it's not really mine. I think I'll buy either the new PowerShot SD500 or SD400 coming out at the end of March and the end of April respectably. Don't get me wrong, the G2 has served me well over the years, but it's too big to carry everywhere - and I suppose you never really know when a plane is going to fly into a skyscraper!

Canon's new Rebel XT is pure mega ulta sexy hotness. I'm by no means a professional photographer, but I'd like to learn and enjoy playing around with cameras! So maybe this summer I'll check it out and let the creative juices flow. I already have a Speedlite 420EX flash for my G2 which can easily be used on the Rebel. The only non-transferable thing would be the macro lens which is made exclusively to fit on the Canon G series cameras... Ah well I'll give it to my bro or something.

I'm LOVING the digital rebel...I've recently took many of the tutorials that Canon provides online and also read some additional information and got seriously into the creative zones of the camera. I'm primarily shooting with full manual right now and the pictures are just amazing!!! so much contcol and ability I love it.

Good to hear you like it. I'll be open to a few pointers when I get mine!

My little rebel, does me just fine for now -- next year I will upgrade to the 20D for sure, however the 1D Mark II is the sexiest piece of cam i've ever seen.

very sweet! how much did the Tamron set you back and most importantly hows the quality? I've been looking for a quality wideangle @ F2.8 - I usually don't consider third party lens's

its 470US, so far, i haven't been impressed, maybe its a faulty lense... i'll check the pics i took yesterday of zabiela and i'll see if I should contact Tamron.

yea, iv'e heard not so good, and good things about Tamron, it seems very hit or miss to me. Considering that the Canon L lens I want is over $1600 .. blah, that's more then the camera itself! The one thing i've already heard from pro photographers is never go stingy on the lens. You can always upgrade the body when new technology comes out, but the lens's last almost forever.

Posted by malek on Mar-09-2005 16:03:

yeah, but the tamron is still better than the 18-55mm.

And that 16-35 L F2.8 is way over my budget (2k) at this moment...
