Oakey @ Amphitheater Review

I was most impressed by Oakenfold's set last night. I've seen him on numerous occassions including last year when he came here before WMC but last night was by far his best performance yet. I was hoping that he would play his retro-Oakey style kinda like his Tranceport 3 album. And that's exactly what he did. There were 2 DJs who opened for him. The guy right before him sucked ass. He played alot of progressive stuff hovering around 90 BPM which almost put me to sleep if I hadn't drank my usual red bull/vodka. However the guy before him rocked!! He played nothing but good melodic trance. I loved his set!! He should have continued spinning instead of letting the other guy come on. Then Oakey comes on with his long hair at around 12 am or 1230 am. Didn't really check my watch. Every single track he played was awesome!! His set was nothing short of amazing. The club wasn't packed like it normally is when a big name DJ comes here. It was crowded still but there was room to dance on the rotating floor. Although it was mostly a sausage fest, I didn't really care because the music was phenomenal. As a result my legs feel like jello today from dancing non-stop last night. I can't ID his entire set but I did recognize a few. Some of them were:

Tiesto - Traffic
PPK - Ressurrection
One of the tracks from Magik 6: 69 - 69 Ways (I think)
A PVD track which sounded like Angel (not sure)

If anyone can ID the rest of his set, I'd greatly appreciate it. He played alot of beautiful vocal trance, much to my delight, which raised hairs on my body. Someone should have recorded his set last night because it was truly one of the best trance sets I've ever heard. I'm not even exaggerating. His set at AMP last year couldn't even be compared to this one. Night and day. I'm so glad he decided to go back to his roots. I don't think I could ever grow tired of that style of music. Melodic Epic Uplifting Beautiful Trance.

I didn't see many TAs there but I figured all of you saw him at WMC or Ultra last week. Suzy Solar was there and was dancing with some hot chick on stage at the end of the night. They both looked hot!! Don't ask me why I didn't snap a pic of that. I'm an idiot. The only complaint I have about last night was that they should have released the cryo a few more times. It was only used twice but it was used at the right time. Love that thing!! And to think, I almost didn't go because I was afraid his set would resemble last year's.

Oakie played Traffic & Resurrection at ULTRA, and a lot of TAs didn't like his set, but I did. It sounded better than the crap he played at last year's ULTRA, for sure.

Hope you had fun!

Oakey has been playing very Tiesto-ish.. he play that @ Ultra too.

oakey used to be a god but now he just doesnt care, he is so not into it. i mean come on he was sitting down on the table behind da decks and walking around, he doesnt give a shit anymore, he doesnt wanna do it anymore. i mean yea his set was OK, nothing more, but i lost all respect for him after this week, let him start his gay band and see him fail miserably all over again.
thats all i have to say

I couldn't agree more. I had an awesome time. I haven't danced like that in a very long time.

His track selection at Ultra was good but I heard a skip in one of his songs dont remeber which one.

I would like to compare last year and this year of oakenfold. i thought last year's set was awesome, not all because of the music. but the crowd was way more into it last year and this year. hands pumping in the air, spectacular view from the stage. But on a personal note i hated him because he was a real dickhead, totally just not happy and acting all superior and shit.
I thought this year his set was average, the crowd just plain out wasnt into it. i talked to him and he was much nicer to me and not a jackass. totally earned a new respect for him after last night. but i just wasnt feeling the crowd as much, the energy in the building wasnt even comparable to our saturday dj's. all in all though was a good show. better then what i excpected considering easter and it was cold and the WMC and haveing my lingerie party the night before.

Whoever bitches about Oakey needs to get a life and needs to learn some respect. He was one of the key people to bring the scene to your ears. He was crafting this art along with a handful of other great djs while most of you were dumping in your diapers and being spoon fed by mommy and daddy. You people take all of this for granted and all you do is criticize. Oakey isn't obligated to make you happy, he does whatever he wants just like you. If you spent your whole life trying to fulfill everybody's wish, you'd wanna try some other things too. He's taken risks ever since he rolled A&R style and that's why he is who he is. He might have been under par for some people certain nights but every dj has their bad nights, that's a fact. I remember when the scene was pure positivity and none of this petty whining bullshit. It's never easy in this industry no matter what genre. And careful when you talk out of your ass cuz that's how you get the hemorrhoids.

Last year he walked off the stage in the middle of his set because he said he wasn't "feeling" the crowd. As Paul stated in his post the crowd was going off and the club was insane. I don't care how much you think you have done for the EDM scene during the span of your career you don't just walk off in the middle of your set and let some disco breaks DJ finish the night while you're drinking champagne and hitting on a bunch of groupies in the green room. Were you there last year when he walked off stage? I was and I was stunned and I can't see how anyone else there wouldn't have been. People paid money to see Oakenfold...not some no name DJ. The club paid Oakenfold to spin...not some no name DJ. Everyone that met him that night said that he was rude and disrespectful. In my opinion he has lost a lot of the respect that he once had from people. I will talk up Ferry any day of the week over Oakenfold. Oakenfold let shit go to his head. I was a HUGE fan of his back in the day, but after seeing him live six times he has never completely impressed me.

Sitting down behind the decks at Ultra was the reason why I walked off and went to see Pete Tong and Sander K. It's a shame that he quit putting his heart into the music and stopped giving a shit about his fans. If he's that tired that he needs to sit down during his sets or completely walk off during a set (without any warning) then maybe it's time that he took a break.

Oakie blows(present tense), i've seen him as many times as anyone here from back in 98 till a few days ago. His set at ultra7 was ok, the mixing was sub par, the track selection was ok as well. Well he did play 3 tunes i have sitting here next to me thats pretty much the only reason i was dancing.

Greetings,
I thought the last 30-40mins of his set was great, the first part was kinda plain. The crowd mostly a sausage fest ,where were the ladies? The cryo with the foil was a nice touch, Maxdady25- I got a pic of one of the girls dancing onstage(blonde)- I`ll post later.

This was my second time at the Amphitheater, first was Tiesto
a couple months ago and that was a great night! We need to have Tiesto back!

Ferry!!!!!!!

Posted by planbrad on Mar-31-2005 06:16:

i only heard the last half of the set and from what i heard, he was playing some nice tracks. as far as ultra goes, oakenfold is good every other year. last year he sucked, the year before he played one of the most memorable ultra sets i have ever had. when he was chugging the big bottle of belvedere and they had those visuals going intot he world trade centers.

OH HELL YEAH. I'D come up for that!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by FallingMoon on Mar-31-2005 16:46:

he may have played better tunes then last year but I still say he was a joke. he literally trainwrecked every mix and it was just BLAH.

I don't think Oakenjoke will ever amaze me or redeem himself from where he's gone. just my .02 cents.

Posted by Tegu on Mar-31-2005 16:51:

oakey now can be summed up in one word: bunka
if i was him i'd have that pulled from every music store shelf in the world so people never found out i made it

but on a lighter note, the ultra set 2 years ago was OTC. i can still remember when he dropped ian brown - fear. really good shit right there.

I only have ID for the first track Oakie played, which was his remix of my track "ocean of love." I wasn't even there to hear it. I drove in from Miami late and got drunk, danced with some hot chicks onstage, and forgot to remember what tracks were being played. Oakie handed me his headphones during his set to let me hear his remix of my track and said that he also opened with it at Ultra. I'm trying to find anyone who has video (or even pics) during my track at any of these shows. it would be much appreciated. i will even give someone a bunch of free unreleased cds for a video. i'm desperate.
much love,
suzy

Oakenfold and I have the same problem with our current jobs. As long as they keep paying us, we keep showing up but are unattatched to the outcome either way.
