its official ttc will go on strike monday

its official ttc will go on strike monday, was watching the news and saw the Head of the transit union announce that the ttc will go on strike on Monday, I for one dont understand why there striking maybe someone can explain I heard it something to do with privatization but not sure, but I for one dont understand why they would strike i heard workers get paid alot of money, not to mention I thought the number of riders were increasing , not to mention the recent fare hike.. so if there is an increase in fare and in riders then where is all this m oney going.
now the majority of the city is screwed i hope they dont go on strike.

Although I'm no expert on the subject... I would guess that the fare increase is related to the strike. TTC workers probably saw that the TTC would be generating more money due to the fare increase, and they thought "since the TTC is generating more revenue, we should get a share of it too!". I don't blame them, but the reason for the fare hike was to provide the TTC with new equipment, not to pay the TTC workers more.

Yay! I get to work from home. Yay!

I did not like the union rep's tone. He seemed full of spite and couldn't care less about the commuters.

Actually Ben I met him in person & he's a good guy...When I was watching the news, I could tell that he has had NO sleep & the fact that this was his first time being in the "public eye". I almost sensed some nervousness too

MAN!!! 401 is gonna be a parking lot,Fuck the TTC.

I say tear down Subway ,build more highways so we dont have to deal with this bullshit.

Oh right!! Bad for environment..

I think all us commuters should unite and hijack a ttc bus. One single bus. And run it from here to wherever. All of us that are unemployed should take shifts driving the thing back and forth at a rate of $1.50 per commuter.

TOTA Tranceport!

it's times like these that make me realize that i would never not live downtown.

i already walk home from work, looks like i'll be walking to work too.

i am just grumpy that i am going to have to get up extra early in the morning!

Posted by Jem_hadar on Apr-08-2005 22:26:

I heard announced that they still are looking to try to reach an agreement over the weekend, and if not reached by sunday, then on monday there will be strike.

Posted by Musik_Fiend on Apr-08-2005 22:40:

really I hope they do reach one b/c its such a huuuuge inconvenience plus the air we breath is already dirrty ... i can see the traffic jams now.

Why is it that we don't have an alternate public transit????? Maybe if ttc had competition they wudn't pull this shyte on us so often.

OK...for those that are sensitive and have ttc relatives, skip this reply and cover your eyes from this point on:

To the TTC Employees that voted for a strike:

Your all a bunch of t*rds...with your Sh**th**d greedy ideals...you have no F*cking clue what it's like for the people that depend on public transit...your spoiled and think that holding us hostage is the way to get paid more than what your worth...well you and your union reps can stick that agreement where the sun don't shine.

We shouldn't have to take this crap from them. They don't even deserve our respect or our money. Why do we keep letting them do this to us?

There....I've vented

Continue please

I totally agree. I mean they get paid well enough, if they want more pay, try and find a new job, or go back to school, you can't expect to rank in the big bucks if you are a TTC worker. I hate to break it to them, but that's the way the world goes round, someone has to do the dirty work, and its not like they get paid min wage, they get paid enough! I live downtown, so i'm lucky, for all of you who this is fuckin over! i hope they don't go on strike!

Posted by Tordan on Apr-08-2005 23:27:

I don't take the bus as often as I used to. When I was in high school my friends and I would always get harassed by ttc bus drivers and for no damn reason. Just because we're brown doesn't mean we have fake student tickets... geez. Anywayz, that was a long time ago and I really don't wanna paint all ttc staff with the same brush. But now that they are striking and inconveniencing my family it just brings back many bad memories.

Don't paint us ALL in one stroke...I've worked in the private sector (ie: car dealerships)and was totally stressed from the same yearly wage (no raise), next to no benefits and the endless bullshit & drama. It took me a year after several applications before the TTC hired me as a maintenance mechanic. Our hourly wage is pretty much on par with other private trucking firms or high end car dealerships so we, as mechanics, are a small minority in this union and the drivers outnumber us by 4 to 1.Mechanics in Canada don't have a union & so we are at the mercy of whatever company we work for.The guys I work with ALL came from outside firms & know full well how lucky we are.As for school...well we have training for whatever technologies arise such as the Hybrid buses that are coming. So if you expect a bus that uses a rubber band to power it then expect well payed technicians to repair/maintain these new buses.Like you said :"I hate to break it to them, but that's the way the world goes round."..You simply will NOT get a guy making $10 to $20 to fix these buses so if ya want buses running smoothly with fewer breakdowns then be prepared to pay for it.

Bus drivers are a different story

Good guy my ass sorry Robby, I wish they'd all get fired, greedy bastards, 16 to 25/hour isn't enough to drive a bus??? what about the people who might lose their jobs if they can't get to work, this should be illegal.
