Dave Clarke's tricks

I was listening to one of Clarke's older mixes (09/02/2002 Live on Triple J mixup)and I wanted to know how he does his cuts really quickly in time effectively changing the feel of the beat and then he slams it back in. He also has a method where he would repeat bass drums then claps and then slam it back in.

Does anyone know how he does it?

with a DJM 600 and some mad skillz yo.

Posted by Perneballs on Apr-11-2005 15:46:

he cuts the music with the trans and the delay button on the effect mixer from pioneer djm 600

Posted by ibiza_cat on Apr-11-2005 15:51:

so if I get a EFX unit from pioneer I could do that stuff?

Posted by Freak on Apr-11-2005 16:06:

Its an old skool hip hop trick called doubling up

i have seen him do it long before the djm 600 was introduced, so its not just down to that

You get two copies of the same record and put the second one one beat behind.
Then cut between the two and it gives the stuttering effect and repeat effect.

You can do it on an efx yes but its not as good or accurate as doing it with a second copy.

You can do that playing the same track in both decks, and using the crossfader, playing the tracks so the drum of track A sounds exactly between two drums of track B. Then you change quickly with the crossfader from drumA to drumB so all the drums of both tracks are played. You can also change from track A to track B so no drums sound, its also a very cool trick.

Thats true Freak, actually Dave Clark do it this way. I saw it in some videos. He changes the crossfaders using both hands, its not a very difficult trick, just some practice and repeated vinyls.

I had a question about one of the things he does in his Impulz Indoor 2001 video. When he's playing Dave Clarke - The Compass, as it's coming he does something to kill the bass and bring it back like moving some knob, if anyone knows what I'm talking about. Also, what's the deal with him pressing the green button so many times?

hrm on the djm 600 i think the red button turns grean, when you samle & loop...

so maby he is adding a kick or something...

I've been doing this for awhile, its a very simple and effective trick, thanks to the Denon X1500, because its got the matrix input, I can have 2 channels play the same source but then but one of those channels threw the FX unit and have it delay the signal by half a beat, you then assign each channel to each side of the crossfader and bingo, love the mixer for this, its like having 3 turntables when you do as you can still use your other turntable thanks to the matrix system.

Also if you wanna get kinda nuts with it, you can delay the second channel by 1/4 3/4 1/1 and create some really good sounds with it.

What is everyone going apeshit on djm600 for? The only time i've known him to use it is when a club has it, and he isnt able to get his mixer of choice put in.

Dave clarke is very well known for using the TASCAM x-9 mixer.

http://www.tascam.co.uk/DJ_prod/news_davclk.html I'd look into things a bit better before jumping to conclusions...

All djs are not so narrow minded as to limit themselves to the use of equipment that is shoved in their face.

That said the x-9 is certainly not a flawless mixer...it has some problems. But I would guess that the eqs, and shitload of samplers is what hooked clarke.

hmm i having a hard time imagining how this sounds, can someone please post a sample?

thanks a lot

No, Dave Clarke is well known for using the djm-600, and viceversa. There are a lot of videos of Dave using the effects and playing with the pitch as it it were an instrument. Really, I have read it in a lot of webs also and everybody always refer to Dave Clarke when talking about how to use the djm-600
Perhaps in the last year he began using another mixers, but the djm-600 will be always be "his mixer".

An interview with dave clarke:

"In the interview on your DVD you say about 80% of the set is fixed?
The rest is how I put it together, that makes the difference. I use two samplers, three keyboards, four guitar pedals and the effects on the Pioneer (DJM600) mixer itself. On the keyboard keys there is text label telling me what the sample are. Because I have hundreds and hundreds of samples and I need to know where every single sample is so I can then look at it, use it and can go into a different direction if I want to go into a different direction."

"Back in the main room Dave Clarke stepped up and the place went off like a 10 mega-tonne bomb. He was really ripping up his tunes; it was audio carnage in his own unique style. He is the master of the DJM600. He can do tricks that leave you thinking to yourself, 'I thought I was good, but oh my god, I'm nowhere near his level.' Many of the tunes he played had a Surgeon style to them, an evil bass line with the odd blip and African styled percussion, his use of effects was exceptional."

Agreed, Dave Clarke is an exceptional DJ.

However when I see articles like this, you always have to take into account the level of the person writing it. If James Zabiela wrote that then I would be thinking... whoah this guy must be god.
I once saw it stated in Mix Mag that Halliwell was on the level of a DMC champion, however anyone in the know will understand that this simply isn't true.

Freak is correct.
For all the answers stating that the 600 this and that, listen to what they guy is telling you. A lot of what Dave Clarke does can be traced back to some good ol' hip hop skills i.e. Transformer scratching and Doubling up. He then brings some new tricks to be placed along side it. He is a clever DJ who knows music very well indeed.
Before we get lost in a storm of technology and what programs do what etc. A lot of good DJing has it's roots in hip hop fundamentals. Some of the party tricks pulled by the greats of old. Just to put things into perspective, those guys were pulling some of these tricks out of the back before I was born and that's way before most of you.
He has a lot of pre rehearsed stuff but in a way that allows him to adlib and get creative, nothing strange there. Nearly all DJs I know have something like that even if it's just a combination of tracks they mix that works particularly well.

Dave Clarke rocks there is no doubt about it. But look beyond Tech sometimes guys.

Cheers

Dave Clarke began as a hip-hop DJ in the mids 80. In fact the double drum trick is done manually by him.

Posted by groovable on Apr-11-2005 20:18:

What i tried to say with those articles is not that dave clarke masters the djm-600, i wanted to tell that dave clarke is well known for using it.

Posted by dj_lane on Apr-11-2005 20:41:

its called 2x Copy

Posted by colombian raver on Apr-11-2005 21:21:

I've heard of using 2 copies but not this way. Haha it's awsome, just tried it out on my computer, the possiblities!

Don't worry man, wasn't you I had in mind.
You made some very sound and factually based posts. The way it should be.
