Question The Sound of Your Town?

Just out of interest, what form of music is most predominant in the clubs around your area?

I'm not talking about the pop/r'n'b/commercial/retro clubs (god knows they're everywhere ), I'm talking about the real clubs. What's coming out of their speakers? Is there any sound that seems more common than any other?

From a Melbourne perspective, we've got a well-entrenched house scene (goes way back to the early 90's) and we've got a very definate underground scene (mainly progressive music) emerging as well.

So what about your neck of the woods?

in my town, Bergen in norway they play a lot of trance in fact There's a club called Exodus that only plays trance. It's great, but usually the Exodus is overcrowded.

I think I went there when I was in Bergen!

My town is the home of Slinky so it's Hard House/Hard Trance. But we're a seaside town so there are a lot of touristy places, as well as cheesy clubs and a couple of large clubs that play really commerical dance music.

Cool, did you like the club?

Posted by sector.30 on Nov-23-2001 20:09:

Nottingham, home to Renaissance @ Media, residents are (fortnightly, monthly, i loose track!) Carl Cox, Deep Dish & Dave Seaman. Big names but music is deep & progressive house mainly. Dave Seaman can play some trancey stuff sometimes though. All the other clubs r total bollox, like Hotdog @ the lost weekend, hard house shite there. Nottingham is one of the house capitals of the UK, unfornately.

There are like 2 clubs.
At one of them they do all kind of stuff.
At the other one, it's only trance & hardhouse.

Posted by Northtribe on Nov-24-2001 01:35:

well... the best one and almost the only one I go to in Stockholm is Docklands. It's almost only psychedelictrance there

Posted by Eugene on Nov-24-2001 03:04:

Here where I live (Baltimore USA), the clubs are basically pick-up clubs where flirting 18-yr-old girls come in groups so that guys can come up behind them, rub, touch, and feel

Well, not that I have anything against that...

They have parties every Thursday night. Their tracklist is ALWAYS the same, they play a lot of (c)rap (nigga what da fuck you lookin at?), Darude - the Storm, Madonna - What it Feels like for a Girl (if it feels bad for her she'll refuse to dance with you ); next, this song that goes "I need a miracle! It's not physical!" (anybody know what it's called?), and even some rock. They always end with Madonna's song.

So, this is where I live. But, about an hour away is DC, where world-famous DJ's play at clubs like Buzz, Insomnia, etc. Tiesto, PvD, Armin, Ferry, Talla, you name 'em, they got it. I've already seen Tiesto and Kimball Collins in DC, and tomorrow I'll see PvD and Tiesto.

Eugene! i truly agree with u!!! all those shit at Hammer jackks...i always listen to 102.7 cuz i think that they will always play real trance music. but they never do.. always same sh*t. it's a fine day, madonna and all kinds of crap! but lucky you, you can go to Buzz, i think that's the best club around our place... nowhere else. and i also have to wait 3 more years just to enter a fucki* club.. damn i can't wwait till i get 18!!!!!! wanna see tiesto man!!!!!

Posted by fridgefan on Nov-24-2001 06:10:

House music and a lot of hip-hop. Almost no trance here at all. Since I like neither of those, I hang out at the retro clubs.

This is probably why most "commercial trance" doesn't seem that commercial to me... the only trance music I hear is what's on the internet.

  1. Alternative (*pukes*)
  2. Rap / Hip-Hop
  3. House

I feel for you guys. The part of the east coast im livin in has got some good clubs. Myrtle Beach has got some good undergrounds like "The Industry" Which plays trance from 12-3 and hard drums n' bass from 3-6. I love that place. Works great cuz trance finishes right when im done peakin. Anyways in wilmington they opened a club called Ibiza a few nights ago. Just waitin to bust up in that place. Trance and Drums & Bass pretty much rule around here.

Dude that is Fragma - Toca's Miracle, it was a huge cheese-trance hit here in the UK last year. Did it not get battered on american radio then? All I have to say is, you lucky lucky people

Posted by flystyler on Nov-25-2001 18:58:

well we dont have any big clubs near me. So it is down to Bar Med and Hogshead to hammer out funky house, music to please everyone, well maybe not everyone in here. But it doesnt really matter when it is not that far to go to get to clubs like Gatecrasher, Code (God's Kitchen), oh god just to many

Coming from the hometown of Godskitchen you'd be so suprised that when a club moves away the nightlife of a town can be so dead. Ok most of the people in my town listen to UK Garage (Hate), Pop, and Indie.

K now the sound of the dance music in my town, the sound at the moment is Hard House now I used to like Hard House about a 1 and a half years ago, but I think its gone to fucking shit, because all it sounds like now is bouncy happy hardcore its gone so shit its untrue, like every time I look at flyer its always Ann Savage and Lisa Pin Up, its really shitty. fair enough I can complain 24/7 and to be honest we haven't had it too bad here like Tiestos spinned 3 times here in 2 years, Ferry spins about once or twice a year, and I've seen the likes of John '00' Flemming, Guy Ornadel, Scott Bond, Tall Paul, Mauro Picotto once and once only lol, John Kelly, JFK, Seb Fontaine and Mario Piu. But as much as this list looks ok, the situation these days is bleak like I think every here just want to watch Nuckleaz C list artist like the Rockafellas, and Disco Brothers it gets so boring its untrue, and whenever a big Dj comes the promoters have to be greedy because they want to pull the big crowds and hire Judge Jules every 3 months it just takes the piss, they hire the same Djs week in week out like I think Ann Savage and Charlotte Birch have spinned in Northampton about 40 times this year!.

Plus aswell you get the club wars here which started it all imagine a town of 250,000 - 300,000 people, Godskitchen used to rule this town and they decided to move to Birmingham about 6 years ago which all in all was a good decison. That leaves the town to two other clubs Sweat which is more of trancey club, and Frisky which has more of a Hard house edge to it. These two clubs basicially keep away from each other untill around a year ago Sweat had the best venue by far in the town which was a fucking wicked venue like it totally kicked ass anyway this venues like the town hall, so frisky according to rumours I've heard send people in to set off the fire alarms so it causes trouble with the local authorities, and Sweat gets asked to leave by the council, so then the finger pointing starts, and a couple of other un professional like pranks being played on each clubs, then Godskitchen finally arrive back they hate the guy who runs Sweat who used to Dj at Godskitchen so they align themselves with Frisky and Sweat align themselves with Passion, this basicially causes the same old line ups and a little business war, Godskitchen come back doing monthlies which I saw some good djs spin in town, then tyrone one of Godskitchens promoters treads back into town, and instead of doing Godskitchen they so a night called Taste, which was the orginal night before Godskitchen which is mainly house lol, but they go and give the main arena to hard house club its really beginning to piss me off so much that its going to the extent that I'm about to grab a fucking promotor by the throat and threaten them to bring some quality trance Djs like I'm not asking for PVd or Oakie who would probably take one look at the town and drive away anyway lol, but Djs like Taucher, Johan Gielen, more Flemming, more Bond lol, it gets so annoying its untrue. And I'm so looking forward to when I take them years in my life when I decide to pack my bags and go abroad for years of working lol sorry for the oracle of time but I need to vent
