Why Doesn't Wisconsin Have Suburbs?

Have you ever driven through wisconsin and noticed there aren't any suburbs? You're goin down I-94 toward Madison and you see cows, fields, farms, etc. Suddenly you're in Madison. Same thing with Millwaukee. . .WTF?

Posted by guster on May-02-2005 07:16:

You're right.. I have relatives in Appleton and there really isn't much suburb happening around cities. Then again.. is that really a bad thing?

I'd much rather have a house on a fair-sized piece of property rather than have every house look the same with 10 square feet of yard.

Posted by DJ_TWiLiGHT on May-02-2005 07:24:

Oh hell ya, I know exactly what you're saying. My point was this, driving any distance there at night is boring as hell, and you have no reference points so it feels like it takes you forever to get where you're going. Then when you get there, traffic sucks because there are no 'burbs for people to have jobs in to drive to or/and live in.

Posted by Omega_Blue on May-02-2005 07:27:

meh, it just depends on where you live in WI i guess.

country roads are good for smoking pot.. no cops around and shit.

there must be an urban area for it to be suburban to, first.

Suburbs form when there are many many many jobs in the urban area and it gets over crowded. then people move out.

create more jobbie jobs in the city, and subs will be created.

Detroit, Michigan
San Jose, California
Indianapolis, Indiana

nice visuals, D-res

it's pretty common for people to talk shit about Wisconsin, just because it's well... Wisconsin. you know how much shit i got from my friends when i decided to leave NY to live in Milwaukee? the shit-talking was endless. but then again every state/city has its stereotypes.

you left NY for MKE????!!

i have to ask... why?

but yeah... its a big suprise when people find out there are normal people living in wisconsin instead of a bunch of rednecks with IQs of 60. Almost every time i talk to someone from another state, they're like.. "are you a farmer?"

my own girlfriend lives in charlotte, NC and she used to think that way. she was suprised when i showed her how milwaukee has more people in it than charlotte.

with the exception of the segregation, Milwaukee is actually a really cultured and amazing city. i mean, there's stuff going on every weekend. you can get any kind of ethnic food you can think of. there's lots of really cool stores downtown, great indie movie theaters, a bar on every corner, good local bands, awesome comedians (ok i'm biased because they're my friends). there's concert halls and theatres, sports arenas, the East Side, Historic Third Ward, Water St, Brady St, Summerfest (the largest music festival!), plenty of colleges, museums, etc...

and downtown Milwaukee is just booming like crazy. seems like every time i drive through, there's another new luxury condo going up. and the greatest thing about Milwaukee is how cheap it is to live here. just yesterday i was taking a tour of this place (the units i checked out were anywhere from high $200s to low $400s) which would easily be in the millions if it were in NY. you get wayyyy more for your money out here.

the only things i dislike about Milwaukee...

1. no NY-style pizza (have to go to Madison for that)
2. bartime is too early
3. electronic music scene is crap

and yeah, after i dumped my ex i found myself a great midwestern boy.
