Im not coloured, but im the minority in most of the places i live, and i get discriminated against a lot, its pretty gay. sometimes its good, cuz they think because im white i have money, sometimes it sucks and when i get to a new school the locals pretend i dont exist because im white. but ive never had a problem with anyone because of their colour.

When I was attending Middle School, a few of the "popular" kids called me a 'communist' because I was Russian.

Found it funny.

Damn straight. We're hella tough.

I'm Moldovian, if we want to get technical. Russian, if you count that I was born before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

How weird is it that I was going to post a thread about racism too.

I think it's naive in turning a blind eye to the fact that segregation just ended around 30 years ago (!!!).

If you think about it, that generation is still much alive. I mean sure, things are MUCH better than they were then, but like I said. It's naive to turn a blind eye to the fact that racism still doesn't exists.

Things are a bit different here in college town, but I have alot of hispanic / black friends at home and you should see the dirty looks they get when they're out eating dinner, or doing anything (even up to the other day when visiting down there). These people look at them and see everything that's wrong with the world today. To me there what's wrong with the world today I guess. It is sad that things still have to be this way in the world that we live in eh.

And btw, this is in Florida so lord knows how things are in the South if this is the way Florida is (which is filled with a minority population).

Would you consider Mike Skinner (The Streets) to be a chav ? or a scallie ? (which i'd imagine is similar to a chav, although it might be location-specific).

some ass from my Uni Football team, got irritated once cos i was at a party talking to this girl he likes. so he comes over and says, "why don't you go back to afghanistan." ( I'm light brown, but becos i'm indian + burmese, peeps sometimes have a tough time figuring out my ethinicity ) Anyway, thankfully the girl ( whose name is Jill, I love ya babe! ) replies " WTF you dumbshit, he's from London. Why don't you go back to where ever the fuck you came from."

Re: This is for all us minority/ "colored" TAs in here...

Racism is a funny thing. Not funny as in hilarious but as in "peculiar", for the lack of a better word.

As far as "race" is concerned, I'm either white, hispanic (gotta love this one) or multi-racial - actually, I was advised to get the quota for "black" people in university as anthropologists would analyse my face rather than the colour of my skin and some white people were accepted into their criteria. So I guess that would make me black and I would be a part of a minority without even have acknowledged it. Or maybe not.

Have I ever experienced a minority status? Kinda. As some of you might know, I study Japanese literature and culture, and I know an absurd amount of Brazilians of Japanese ancestry (in fact, the first time I met an actual Japanese, I thought she was Brazilian as well, and took a while to figure out why her accent was so thick). One of my best mates, who shares the usual "Amerindo-Afro-European" ancestry most Brazilians have, would often complain that he was being called gaijin in a derogatory way (by people who seemed quite friendly to me) and that he was segregated by the aforementioned group. Then a funny thing happened when I started dating my girlfriend, who is also Brazilian but has Japanese ancestry - the so-called "Japs" of that first group would often seem to segregate themselves, having some difficulty recognising themselves as "Brazilian" (my girlfriend didn't seem to have this problem as much as they had) even though many of them were aware of the fact that they were not "Japanese" in Japan. Most likely, this is what happens when you're identified by an "ethnicity" belonging to a country different than your own. There are loads of papers written about it.

Back to topic, I wouldn't consider the facts mentioned in the first post as "racism" but rather "jokes" considering that, if he looks Chinese, people who are not familiar with the Chinese migration to the US will perceive him as Chinese. I actually laughed when I read the "Ching Chong" bit. It's not like he had been abused or anything, although it can happen as Jackson once reported that his girlfriend (whose parents come from China) was rudely treated by some old lady in the UK.

I would keep writing (in order to finish my point) but I need to do a little something here.

different names are area specific, but the media-specific name of "chav" has generally graced all the groups of scumbags in the uk.

The whole ideology of a chav is someone who hangs around the streets all day and living off the government benefits etc.

Therefore Mike Skinner is not a true chav since he has a strong musical career and earns money. his appearance and thought processes lend himself to looking like he belongs in the chav group. but that is all

Ignorance is universal in all people.

I live in the South, I deal with discrimination everyday--from all colours.

I didn't enslave your fucking family, I didn't beat your great great great grandma--leave me the fuck alone.

Speeking on behalf of the man we would like to ask all of the uppity sub-humans posting in this thread to report to your local police station for a beating....er, re-education. The rest of you that are playing into the appropriate racial stereotype for the ammusement of the WASPs please continue.
