Your worse trainwreck stories
I only djed once for a party and I managed to miss a few beats. Didn't look too good for my first time. Anybody has good stories to share?
knocked the arm across a couple of grooves b4 by accident durin a mix - the result was 100 galloping horses and a red faced DJ
this wasn't at a party, but it was pretty bad. I was spinning my Traffic picture disc, enjoying the little mountain spinning around, when i suddenly decided "Hey!! I'm gonna' twirl my record around my finger like Tijs did at TIC!!!" Moments later, it slipped from my finger to the tonearm, ripping my beloved picture disc
Oh well, the music stopped, no records were harmed, (horribly) so i just turned my amp off, put the records away, and ran out of the room as quickly as possible
I might be djing for the first time ever out tonight.
possible stories to come later...

No major ones myself, but I was chatting to a guy who was teaching me stuff and he was playing in Barcelona I think it was to 20,000 people and had a bit to drink....
took off the last record he mixed out and all of a sudden the music just stopped.... what could it be?
...ohh wait wrong record!!!!
He shat himself, then composed himself then did what any great DJ does in a situation like this looks pissed shrugged his sholders, i.e. blames the system
this is not my train wreck, nor was it the dj's fault...
the club will remain nameless. night was going well, and with 30 minutes to go music shuts down, everyone starts booing and yelling. the two dj's look stressed and start to freak out...no power to the setupd, the promoters are coming down and yelling...what could be wrong...well the amature that setup the booth, put all the equipment into the same plug through an extension cord. the cord was extending from the booth, across a stage (for about 5 m)...of course people had to be up there to dance...this little blond who was literaly naked sitting down close to the plug...she sees the cord and decided to see what it does, so she pulls it out of the plug.
as i said, not my train wreck, but it was fun to attend it.
my story: played in a club where the system was real loud, like piercing loud cuz the speaker stacks were pretty close to the booth. but behind so there was a delay. just stepped on, beatmatched the first tune in my fones just fine, started the mix and it was really off. fixed it live in a few seconds, but not before some minor wreckage. turns out the DJ before me turned off the monitors.....
not my story: Ferry Corsten @ Exit in NYC 2002...i think. in the middle of one of his tracks...(ligaya? can't remember), he picks up the needle accidentally. reaction in this order:
think he was a bit drunk by then. but was a damn fun night.
my friend skipped to the next track on the wrong cd. kinda funny.
I was getting really into the mix at a party I had and was fiddling with the EQ's in mid mix. I got the incoming track all the way in and did a little overdramatic EQ turn and brought my hand back down across the mixer and accidentally pulled the fader on the incoming channel down as well.
Accidentally hitting the cue button in the middle of the song.

heh i've got plenty of these stories. some on air, some just mixing at home for fun and some playing out live. all are embarassing but fun memories.
- took the wrong record off once (on air)
- didn't clean off a very dusty record. cued it, mixed it (quite well actually
) then as its playing... the stylus collected so much dust that it skipped lots and sound quality went to shyte and of course the stylus just ended up skidding across the vinyl and the music went out. all the meanwhile my friend who was beatmatching (we did a versus on air) had the biggest laugh about it.
- was playing at a club and i mixed the first 2 tunes with the VCF on (xone62 mixer) and the whole time i was like... why isn't there any freakin bass!?
there's many more but i'd rather not type it all out.
mixed a record in with the bass kill activated. worked out well tho, as i caught on to this eventually, but didn't know what to do when i saw it. then, i waited for a silent breakdown, and brought the bass in. in silence, it wasn't noticeable, but when the kick came in, the people reacted nicely.
had 3 records playing at once. 1 vinyl, 1 CDJ-200, 1 CDJ-800. CDJ-800 in vinyl mode, track finishes, and the next starts. a 3 deck trainwreck sounds a lot worse, even if just 1 track is off, and specially if that one track was the one with the kick on full. this was at a house party i did, mostly all who were here were DJs, so they understood quite well without me even having to say anything.
pulled the wrong CD out at a fashion show i spun at. luckily, it was real early, show hadnt started, only like 20-30 people there. the few that even noticed completely understood when i said i was just doing a standard soundcheck.
got a bad burn on a track. i knew it completely, in and out, so it was quite my surprise when it cuts out with 3 minutes to go, and me not having brought in the next track yet. again, at my house with a couple of buds, so didn't matter.
I was spinning at a friend's house party that had no monitors so I had to do it all in headphones. First mix. Everything went perfectly. I take off the headphones and can't hear any music. A quick look to the mixer - some assclown had been playing with my mixer before I stepped on and had left the crossfader all the way to the left... thanks a lot!
i was spinning in my room once forgot to take the record off and put a new record on top of the record. didnt realize what i did until i transfered over to it and started to put away the other record and was like.. im missing that record..... hehe pretty dumb move.
i love all the disclamers. This was not a trainwreck & not my fault.
All u people must mess up at least once in a while. Push a light vinyl a little hard or what not
.
Anyway yea a few times I forgot what CDJ was playing, and definately stopped the wrong one...
Sometimes ive knocked the tone arm with my hand while reaching for the pitch, or sometimes my headphone cable does that.
Sometimes I dont pay attention and definately take off the wrong record.
(none of this live) but it happends...
At a dnb gig, my first transition saw me pushing the vinyl just a BIT too hard...I slipped a couple of beats, but it wasn't that big of a deal, it just annoyed me. I hate starting out with a sloppy transition.
I decided to drop something big for the next song, to make up for it, and all was well during the layer, the breakdown came...everyone put their hands in the air...I put my hands in the air...drum roll...
...Right when the bass comes in, I slammed my hands down...directly onto the needle, which unleashed the most earth-shattering KWUUUM-SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE noise. Ruined the record, too.
The rest of my set was fine, but damn, that was ugly.
stopped the wrong cd before and oh...pressing pause in the middle of the sound..
yeah i've bumped the tone arm a few times.

Haha, mine usually consist of me being too drunk and messing around WAY to much on the decks, thinking I'm better than Sasha X10 and am doing great....yeaaaa....NO, afew beers make me better but LOTS of beer makes me a monster, but umm honestly I don't think its my fault, like everytime I get wasted, my umm decks can't hold pitch and the controls change on the mixer....NOT MY FAULT
haha too true.
the record was playing at some party i dj'ed for a few mates i knew, this ballistic kid started scratching on the record like it was a toy and everyone thought it was me trying to scratch, very bad memory.
