ATI: Xbox 360 will outperform PS3
"I think PS3 will almost certainly be slower and less powerful," says graphics guru Richard Huddy; backward compatibility explained.
In an interview with Web site bit-tech.net, ATI developer relations manager Richard Huddy waxed technical about Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 360 and ATI's role in the machine. The 360 will be using ATI's Xenos graphics processor, and Huddy's job is to chat with potential developers and then help them develop the tools that best use Xenos' capabilities.
With regard to the console's architecture, Huddy says, "It's way better than I would have expected at this point in the history of 3D graphics." He sees the unified pipeline, rather than segregated pixel and vertex engines, giving the 360 a huge advantage in accessible processing power.
Huddy goes on to shed some light on backward compatibility. Each Xbox game is written with specific Xbox hardware in mind, and the 360's move to PowerPCs and ATI graphics doesn't jibe with the Xbox's Intel chips and Nvidia graphics processors. To add to the difficulty, the 360 wasn't designed for backward compatibility early on in development.
To solve this, Microsoft has implemented the use of emulator programs that will let the Xbox 360 play Xbox games. According to Huddy, "emulating the CPU isn't really a difficult task. ...the real bottlenecks in the emulation are GPU calls--calls made specifically by games to the Nvidia hardware in a certain way. General GPU instructions are easy to convert: an instruction to draw a triangle in a certain way will be pretty generic. However, it's the odd cases--the proprietary routines--that will cause hassle." Once complete, the Xbox emulators could come preloaded on the unit's hard drive or be downloadable via Xbox Live.
Huddy also dispels the notion that the PlayStation 3's higher graphics clock speed (550MHz versus the 360's 500MHz) means the Sony console will outperform the Xbox 360. He believes that its ATI's unified pipeline will make the biggest difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3. ATI archrival Nvidia, which is providing the RSX graphics processor for the PS3, has chosen not to go the route of a unified pipeline.
"This time around, [Nvidia doesn't] have the architecture, and we do. So they have to knock it and say it isn't worthwhile. But in the future, they'll market themselves out of this corner, claiming that they've cracked how to do it best. But RSX isn't unified, and this is why I think PS3 will almost certainly be slower and less powerful."
Hah! An ATI guy says that their chipset will perform better than the competitors...
What a surprise!
I know two things...
1) Xbox 360 is going to fucking blow the roof of things.
2) I am def. getting this console.

Xbox360 will be awesome. Just don't believe all the hype. It won't be the be-all-end-all console that MS would like it to be. Neither will the PS3.
heh i read this the other day and thought yeah well u will say that, the xbox 360 will certainly be good but fact is the ps3 will be coming out much later plus as far as ive heard the rsx isnt even really finished yet therefore bollox to wot they say, the ps3 will be superiour to the xbox. now this isnt to say it will be better or will end up the more successful console, but surfice to say the ps3 will definately technically out perform the 360.

Meh, this is just more hype and slander that we can expect from both sides until the consoles come out. Personally, I think in the immediate foresight Sony is still on top. You can't deny the support of the third party developers. Even though many are behind Microsoft as well, Sony still has more, and this is really what made the PS2, even though it was an infinitely shittier system than the xbox.

MS is missing something very important=good videogame creators mainly from japan such as squarenix
you mean best pseudo-rpg games came from Japan, you are right.
but if you think about Civ3, Call of Duty, QUake, half life, warcraft, splinter cell, .............................
all of them came from north america.

xbox 360 is going to be awesome, some trailer's of upcoming game's for it are just amazing...
I've seen what the PS3 and the Xbox360 can both do first hand and right now what has been presented on the PS3 simply destroys everything seen on the Xbox360. The difference is kind of scary.
Now does that mean the PS3 is simply that much more powerful than the Xbox360? No one really knows. Specs are always blown wayyyyyyyyyyyy out of proportion and are falsely hyped. And there's more to it all than just the GPU (video card) fellas. The Sony and IBM are hyping their whole CELL architecture bigtime and going by what's been seen so far, it's the one thing living up to its hype so far. Maybe the ATI card in the Xbox360 will be more powerful technically than the PS3's nVidia card. That doesn't mean the system, as a whole, is more powerful, though.
Then there's the video output. All Xbox360 games will be at least 720p. Whelp, so will the PS3...but here's the shocker. The PS3 will have TWO VIDEO OUTPUTS, both capable of 1080p (that's p, not i!) simultaneously.
Anyhow, don't go by the specs. Don't go by the tech. Go buy the evidence you see. From the evidence I've seen, the PS3 is simply mindblowing. The Xbox360 has left a lot of people unimpressed so far, but that doesn't mean it won't be impressive in the future. Sony just came out and shocked the hell out of everyone with all these amazing things about the PS3 at E3 and completely overshadowed anything shown by Microsoft....then there's Nintendo, which didn't show anything really.

I'm not too hyped on Xbox 360, sure I own an Xbox now but it's been collectiong dust for the last 10 months. I actually have more fun with my Gamecube these days. I think I will buy a PS3 (you know game support is going to be great on this system) and a revolution as a second console for it's 1st party games.
PS3 specs-wise destroys XBOX360. In fact it digs a grave for it, puts it in, covers the grave back up, and then poops on the grave.
Can't even argue otherwise. And if you still think you can you haven't done enough research.

And don't get me started on Madden |
.
If the ATI card is better than the Nvidia card, then the xbox360 can be better for gaming ( despite the ps3 having more processing power ). The ps3 will probably be faster in loading a game, but the fps and the visual quality might be higher with the xbox360. ( A good videocard can make a world of a difference )
^^
That is true, but this post was about specs.
As far as gameplay goes between all the systems it's entirely subjective. Different titles, different tastes, different for everyone. Trying to argue which is best is futile.

WOOO HOOO!!!
Xbox 360 will absolutely put PS3 in it's grave!
we havent even seen real gameplay from sony. it's too early to judge.
but- we will know for sure that x360 will have a better online community. why, you ask? well, considering that sony announced not too long ago that it won't have a complex intergrated online system (like xbox live) in which you store friends, send messages, invite others, etc.
this is obviously a bad move and it doesnt help that the ps3 wont have a hard drive. hello to more overpriced memory cards.
however, on sony's side, the x360 wont have hd-dvd or blu-ray. at least, not yet. but who knows, microsoft is supposed to unveil something huge this month. so we'll see what they are up to.
i think the #1 hyped game for gamers before 2nd next-gen consoles were released was Metal Gear Solid 2 for PS2. It looked awesome but was a big overall let down. It looked great, but you can't tell a game is "great" by just watching it. PS3 may game some games that have a lot of hype, but it doesn't mean it's the next step in gaming.
I do believe performance has a lot to do with whether a person finds a game appealing. These days everything is loaded with more and more polygons, audio channels and player immersion techniques such as the EyeToy or shock-feedback.
However, you look at a game like Katamari Damacy which has a huge following based on a player picking up the controller and not just judging it based on online/streamed videos.
I, for one, think PS3 will let time take its toll on technology's price and come out with a more powerful system at its launch time. Being an owner of PS1 and PS2, i must fall down to Xbox360. No matter the performance, I must say i'm a sucker for the online communities of Xbox Live! It's a matter of playing games rather than basing it on it's performance on a machine
