Ur thoughts on the flag burning amendment?

IMO it's always bad idea to limit political expression. the amendement won't stop persons from 'desecrating' the flag. i'm sure people will just urinate on it or do something similar.

won't it also clash with the first amendement? what happens to the first amendment? ur thoughts?

Havent heard about this but i guess its that they want to ban the burning of the flag?

Very unfortunate then imo, US used to have good free speech laws, if this passes i guess that is the beginning of the end.

Posted by metalgearsolid on Jun-23-2005 00:48:

yea it passed but hey slowly they are taking away our rights but hey no complaining from the ppl

Posted by St_Andrew on Jun-23-2005 01:33:

okay, so i read some stuff about it now, and its only passed by the house so far and it looke like its not gonna be passed by the senate. then i also read quotes like this:

quote:
``Ask the men and women who stood on top of the Trade Center,'' said Rep. Randy (Duke) Cunningham, R-Calif. ``Ask them and they will tell you: pass this amendment.''

Posted by ProDiGaL on Jun-23-2005 01:58:

doesnt the flag represent the freedom you so love and enjoy, which *cough* also includes the freedom to burn the flag?
its like a paradox.

-what are you in for jimmy?
-burning a peice of cloth bubba.
-oh ok, now im going voilate you analy.
umf umf umf

"If the flag needs protection at all, it needs protection from members of Congress who value the symbol more than the freedoms that the flag represents." said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

I doubt it will pass. Even if it passes the senate 3/4 of the states then need to pass it. Out of 11,000 attempts to pass amendments, only 27 have been passed.

Well idk about that amendment, but burning the flag of your nation is disrespectful. I agree that the flag of your country stands for everything that country has to offer to you. If you urinate on a flag might as well leave that country because such actions give the idea that you dislike that country..... Many soldiers have died defending that flag and doing such thing will be disrespecting them also, showing that you dont care for the freedom you are enjoying today.

fair enough, but should you take away the freedom to dislike your country?

Our rights to dislike our country(homeland) should not be taken away, and they are not. There are many ways to show and make the politicians know what they are doing is not correct like protesting etc. America doest not operate by itself is the peep who we elect, America is were we live at.... its like saying you dont like your house, the only notion that you can use for that is how it looks, style, construction etc.. but you cannot do that with America, people dislike America how some peeps are operating. America its not the fault of the problems we get into... Im not saying that is always the politicians fault but also sometimes the systems fault. But doing this kind of action burning a flag its not right, soon people are going to want to burn crosses

I should save my post that I wrote a few days ago, as I feel I will be using it more and more. This country is the incredibly hot and perfect girlfriend that I take for granted. Now, my heart is broken as I see her drift further away from me, she becomes a shadow of what she once was.

No. You have it ass-backwards. People have died defending the freedoms that the flag represents, not the flag itself as some kind of super-sacred inanimate object. If the country the flag represents ceases to represent said freedoms wtf would I care about 50 stars and 13 stripes if it stood for values that were completely antagonistic towards my own? If you think that desecrating the flag because it supposedly goes against everything our country stands for than I'm afraid you're not very learned with respect to what our country actually stands for. In other words, the first amendment is the FIRST amendment for a reason.

I'm wondering what you think of the flag being used as a backdrop for a continuous stream of lies served with an arrogant and demeaning attitude (i.e. Fox News)? Is it disrespectful as well?

IMO the only thing more sad than showing contempt through the burning of textiles is to outlaw such behaviour.

The American meadia over exagerrates things and lies A LOT. Its sad that many Americans fall for everything they say. THE MEDIA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW WE VIEW THE WORLD, and i wouldnt always blame the American media always also the Euro, although all of the news channel the one i trust the most is BBC News. But still all of you people view America as a country of lies, imperealist etc. This is a country that allows citizens to do almost what the hell they want, in a free society crazy shiet happens like serial killers emerge because the govt. dosent get to involve with civilians and their way of living.

Why not just answer the question?

Dupz would like to say, for the record, that while beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Renegade is indeed a dreamy man specimen that Dupz has been vociferously eying up and down. Furthermore, Dupz requests assistance in communicating aforementioned interest to the appropriate party.

End communication.

Sorry to post on topic or anything... but to alleviate your worries, it won't pass the Senate. The House always passes extremely partisan drivel, simply because they can (see Henry Hyde's UN Reform Act). In the Senate things work differently.

Best Case: Turned down on simple no vote in Senate
Worst Case: Filibustered by the Dems until it dies
