The 7 person rule

I heard a rule that if you know 7 people, you know EVERYBODY, because those 7 people network out to virtually the rest of Canada (or is it the world?).

The 7 person rule is also why it's such a "small world" when you meet somebody that knows somebody you know. You shouldn't be surprised by it, because the 7 person rule is always in effect.

Here's an example. Last semester, I was studying for an exam. The night before I realized I was facked. For the first few units in that course, I made exquisite summary sheets and e-mailed them off to everybody in my TA group, hoping they had summary's for the latter units and could send them to me. That e-mail was forwarded to a bunch of other people outside of my TA group. Specifically to a guy named DREW.

Drew adds me to MSN at 1 am the night before my 1 pm exam. It's crunch time. Me, him, and my friend form an emergency all nighter study session and we drink coffee's, cram, and watch the sunrise as we panic.

I ended up scoring 86% on that exam. Score.

So I meet up with Drew the other day for beers, and he asks me about Boa. His friend promotes there. He then said "back when I was working at Moores..." and I go "Hold up, is your friend Jeff Button?" aka. Floorwhore

YEAH!!

Small world? Or 7 person rule???

thats pretty intersting stuff.. it would be really cool to test out.. i don't know if i'd go as far as the world or even all of canada.. but i'd have to say that you could probably get a pretty wide range of ppl throughout the area of your province or something

It's actually 6 people not 7 and funny enough lately I've been discovering that it's freakishly true.

And it's not that you know everybody but you are somehow connected to everyone in the world...

Now if only I could remember what it's called - it was on CSI once

"6 degrees of separation" I think

Posted by Surreal JRS on Aug-05-2005 14:17:

Six degrees of separation is the theory that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. The theory was first proposed in 1929 by the Hungarian writer Frigyes Karinthy in a short story called "Chains".

Last year I met a really interesting woman who is originally from London who's (I think brother) married Claudia Schiffer

And considering I've spoken to Rene Zellweger a few times you all know her through me too

Yeah, it is "6 degrees of separation." Will Smith made a movie by the same title years ago, before he was massive....

by the way , there are tons of books for this emerging theory... "Linked" and "Nexus" being the two most profound.

The network/connectivity theories extend way past just social connections... some people postulate that EVERYTHING is connected within 7 or so links. Business, personal life, science, etc, all have hidden connections.
