Monkey Dancer 2 Monster Massive Review

Way too tired to post my full review yet but wanted see how everyone else enjoyed the Massive. All i can say right now is Nic Fanciulli owned the night for me, damn you tiggo, another one getting my attention on the dark side

Posted by philippe on Oct-30-2005 15:38:

I'm hearing conflicting reports on whether it was a good night and who performed best

One thing's for sure: The devil was incredibly hot

Posted by djdimensions on Oct-30-2005 19:59:

i would have called it a bad if it were not for markus and marco v.one of the worst parties ive ever been all those ppl who were just rolling like a moffo and couldnt walk or talk just pissed me off.half of the people didnt even know one djs name. ill just leave it there srry i missed the meetup

Posted by NeroFlash on Oct-30-2005 20:16:

Did you see any little 14 years old kid running around high? That is what did it for me in 2003 Monster Massive, never when there again.

Posted by vhx1 on Oct-30-2005 20:31:

Fanciulli's set was rocking except it was way too fucking early and no one was there.

Deep dish's set made me fall asleep but they did play Terry Grant - I'll Kill you ( Luke CHable REmix)

Markus Schulz's set was at best ok. I guess my tastes have really changed. i haven't listened to his sets in a while.

I left before i could hear Marco V. Spin.

Although this was my first massive, i expected the cracked out 14 year olds and people that are clueless bout the music. In the end it seems like i paid 50 bucks to see fanciulli play for one hour.

How was the sound system? was it better then TIC?

Posted by vhx1 on Oct-30-2005 20:39:

The house room's sound system was decent. However the main room's system was horrid. It was all bass and no treble or highs. I could barely make out most of the songs. Half the time the sound was clipping.

I wasn't there for TIC

Love MM Review

Hi everyone! I just woke up after having attended MM last night, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on the night.

We arrived around 9:30pm and there was a massive line to get in already, not to mention the traffic buildup off the Martin Luther King exit. I thought it was going to be a great night just by the turnout, but I was wrong...

Markus Schultz rocked the night, but I didn't feel Deep Dish's set (or even ANTOINE CLAMARAN's) at all, so I didn't stay long enough to hear Marco V's set. I'm sure he was pretty good too. Friends of mine thought the night was disappointing overall so they left early as well. We even hit different rooms (jungle, house, etc.) to see if the music would be any better, but it was overall still not our cup of tea. Maybe it was just our tastes and preferences, but it seemed like the last couple years were overall better than this year.

Little kids running around high or in e-puddles don't bother me at all (and will not keep me from going again), but it's the talent they bring that matters most. I think I'm going to have to hesitate before buying my MM tix next year. Heard Spunoween was a blast...

What's everyone's else's thought on this?

okay, i'm alive and well after finally getting some sleep from the longest 48 hours of my life. my night started out with xtracktor picking me up, thanks again btw, and off we went. got there around 8:20 and went straight to vip line and met up with kris, michelle and mike (girls very hot outfits!). got in and went to the meet up, finally got to meet orbital, very cool, and then off we went to the house room to see nic fanciulli and OMG, he was so much fun and the complete highlight of the night for me. the tas made their way up front of course and that is where i stayed until the end of nic's set. i didn't think i had any dancing left in me after dancing all night/morning to victor's amazing set in san diego but nic wasted no time getting the groove right out of me! i know no tracks but i know what i like and nic i likey likey. MNS is going to be unbelievable! the rest of the tas made their way over to get set for markus' set and i was planning on making my way over right after nic's set but then robbie rivera came on & the house room just had a hold of me and wouldn't let me go! is it possible that i may be turning into a house junkie? i stayed for almost all of robbie's set, very good and funky, and then rushed back over to the main room to have just missed markus' set, damnit! still have yet to see more than 20 minutes of his set. another time, another time.

meet back up with more tas, run into swedish egil, very chill guy, and tons of other people randomly, funny how you see so many people you know in a crowd of 1,000s like that. we walk around some to take in the e-puddles (not nearly as many as nocturnal) and so many great costumes. i have to say that my MM experience was much better than nocturnal. i'm not big into massives but this one was pretty good. there were young kids there but i felt there was a much more diverse crowd than nocturnal. i didn't have the same bad experiences as some of the other's did with the crowd, just about everyone i came into contact with was awsome, i mean people were actually saying excuse me and sorry as you moved through the crowd. i guess i got lucky. kris and i had several picture opportunities with random guys asking for our pics with them. i guess that's what happens when you hang around a "sexy devil" like that!

then it was off to secure our places for deep dish, upstairs in the balcony, great idea whose ever that was, and there we stayed until the end. first time ever seeing deep dish and i was not disappointed. overall very great, danceable tracks and some very funky beats. yes the sound was not great in the big room but oh well. then marco v comes on and i was the most excited to see him since i had seen him over the summer at avalon and loved his set then. he comes on and throws down in his usual manner but his set was not as good, i thought, as it was the first time i saw him. still good but i began to lose steam and during marco's set i actually sat down, gasp! i know, i'm usually the last one dancing but man 2 straight days of hard core dancing and even harder core partying has taken it's toll.

all in all not a bad night. sorry others didn't have that great of a time, i felt positive energy everywhere and enjoyed meeting some new ta's. sorry for not remembering many of the names but some were orbital(loved talking to you at bob's), xtracktor, and the guys from blue surface. and of course i had a blast with the usual suspects! thanks bob for hosting yet another after after hours( sorry i couldn't be more lively with my dance moves, just way too spent) and mike for spinning, u rock! i enjoyed my night emensly and glad i went. now it's off to rest up some more for tonights venture at the MOR.

Posted by vhx1 on Oct-30-2005 22:04:

i wished i coulda met some of the tas. DIdn't know which any of em was tho. I saw one guy with a TIC US shirt, a few guys in the very front seemed like they were trainspotting fanciulli. Other than that no clue

Posted by Sh3n on Oct-30-2005 22:21:

MM was ok. i was kinda of disappointed. I really wanted to see Markus and Deepdish. We left the OC at 6:30, and got to the sports arena at around 7:30. tailgated for a few and started our night on a high note. so immediately after we entered, my group seperated, me and my buddy went to meet a few friends, and i stoped by for a few to say hi to the TA people.(I was the guy with the white pinstripe shirt and a red stiped tie over his head ) we walked around for a while, very confused what room was what, and what the time slots for everyone was. I must say, the DNB room and House room were SMALL compared to the main room. the system sucked outside in the DNB room, and the house room was ok. spent a few minutes listening to Behrouz, got a txt message, met up with my group again. we were outside in the house room just hanging out. we switched for a bit, heard some more of Behrouz and walked out to get a beer. Lost track of time, and listened to Robbie Rivera's set, missed Markus so we ended up going to the DNB room and listening to Shimon and Sub focus (10:30-1:45). gotta say i was dancing my ass off the whole time, after sub focus got off, we ended up sitting in the bleachers and heard Deep Dish. jeebus christ the floor was vibrating, i felt there was too much bass, not enough mids and highs. chilled up in the bleachers half way thru Marco V's set, left to meet a few friends outside in the House Room, and ended up going to the DNB room again for the last 20 minutes.
so after a long night of dancing and having fun, i got a couple hours of sleep, and now i'm studying for an exam

Posted by Sh3n on Oct-30-2005 22:24:

P.S. i think i got high from all the 2nd hand weed, all through the night people asked me if i was looking for "candy" or weed. Beer > weed & E

that tooo i was up there on the bleachers and still all bass man im thinking this was a waste of money

It was an OK night. I wasn't really feeling the music until Marco V got on. He tore it up! For the most part, I was bored of everything else.

Only way I'll go to another massive is if there's a Techno DJ in the line up.

Before Monster Massive
We left OC at 8pm hoping to get to the Sports Arena by 8:30pm. Wrong, didnt make it until 10pm. Two freaking hours from OC to LA!!!!! Ggggggrrrrrrr We finally make it, and my friend knew of a parking lot that charged $5. We parked there and walked across the street into the Sports Arena.

The Arrival
Once we walked into the parking lot, we noticed a sea of people in every direction. Lines were ridiculously huge. I exchanged our Groove Tickets for Ticket Master tickets. They open several more entrances and we walk right in. Woohoo.

Markus Schultz
Once inside, Markus was already playing. We missed a good portion of his set by trying to situate ourselves. I cant comment on him since I missed most of his set. We finally find the TAs exactly where I knew Id find them: center front! Hahahahaha Off course, all I had to do was look for those big red hearts! Hahahaha After Markus, the music went downhill. The next two hours seemed to drag! I wasnt feeling Olav or Antoine. But oh well.

Felix Da Housecat
Finally we go outside for a breather and Felix comes on. I have never heard him before and I must say HE BLEW ME AWAY. Hes music was soooooo good that it had me dancing non-stop. I specially loved his 80s mini set. To hear the whole patio sing along to his set was amazing! Just like last year, the houseroom owned the main room for one hour! He dropped Sweet Dreams (Marco V played it too, but different remix), Blue Monday, White Horse, Nirvana, Watching Cars Go By, and others I cant remember. Felix shouldve been in the main room. I ran into Desiree on the patio. She looked so hot! Sorry Tigo, you missed out on her!

Deep Dish
I kept drifting into Deep Dishs set but I can honestly say I didnt feel them. I think I like it when they play by them selves a lot better. They also played this one track that Antoine had just played like 3 tracks before they went on!!!!!

Marco V.
His intro was sick! Then the first two songs seemed to drag. Typical Marco V style, start slow and build it hard! All of the sudden he dropped Automanual and the place went nuts! From there on, it was pure insanity! Marco V was on fire! He was playing mostly popular tracks. Oh yeah, I noticed that most of these Djs play a lot different at massives than at clubs. Their music is broader, more mainstream at massives.

Sound System
Holy smacks! The houseroom had a FUNKTION ONE System! WTF!!!! Those big blue speakers were Funktion One with the grills on them! VERY NICE! No wonder it sounded clean. The main room system was EAW. It was good and bad, depending where you stood. If you stood in the front center, the bass was too loud. So loud that my ears were hurting. At times the bass sounded distorted. Thank god for those earplugs. If you stood below any of the line arrays (hanging speakers), the system was really clean.

The Ups & Downs
- Lines were long, but they were moving pretty fast.
- Too many cracked out kids.
- Saw someone get taken away in an ambulance.
- Deep Dish was boring.
- They ran out of waters.
- 3D glasses kicked ass.
- Long lines for drinks.
- Clean restrooms. This was the first time Ive been to a party where they had bathroom attendants constantly cleaning the restrooms, cleaning the toilets, and stocking the toilet paper. Nice job!

Over all experience 7 out of 10.

I'd have to agree with most of Woody's review. I got to MM around 10ish and by the time we got in it was 11. There was a huge line to get my Groovetickets and another huge line to get in. I went up and caught the last 30 minutes of Markus' set -- it was pretty bangin'. Next up was Antoine and I really wasn't feeling him. I was excited to see Deep Dish -- I saw Dubfire at Avalon and he was awesome. Unfortunately like I've heard before, they seem to play better alone, and this was no exception. Marco V closed it out and his set finally got me moving! I didn't really notice the crappy sound but that may have just been because of the earplugs. Also, I met some more cool TA's last night including GodMadeTrance and one other guy dressed as Willy Wonka, but I couldn't hear his name! All in all it was okay, the major downer was the growing E-puddle sitting front and center! grrrrr Dancing with my friends made it all better though.

ya see what happens when i dont show up? LOL.

Posted by Carriegsxr6 on Oct-31-2005 01:58:

Nic Fanciulli kicked ass, I am glad I got to see him. Then it was off to Markus, great tracks expect for the time he cut the speakers off right in the middle of a build up. Then went back over to the house room and caught some of Olva Basoski who kicked ass as well. Back to the main room for Deep Dish. However I was hanging up on the balcony with some fellow TAs and the sound up there sucked. Totally ruin deep Dish's set for me. Stayed to catch Marco V and he played the best set last night IMO. Totally rocked the place.

I enjoyed hanging out with all the usual TAs and got to meet a few new ones too. Great putting a face to the handle names. It was great hanging with Gordy, and as ninerlove and I were walking back to the car, we met Godmadetrance at the stoplight. w00t, definitely a crazy night.

Most of all, I had the best time dressing up and seeing everyone elses costumes. It made the candy ravers seem almost normal cause we didnt have to look at their usual neon colors all night. My little sister and her friend had the best time ever. They were in awe at all of the young kids their age who were parting with them. They have never been in the same place as thousands of people before. They handled the crown of pushy people and e puddles quite well. Thank you Robert for helping keep the pervs away.

Then it was off to Bobs again for yet another after hours. It was great meeting Blue Surface, definitely chill people.

Love is in the air

Sorry about the meet-up guys. I had no idea that they where not going to open the doors untill 8.. but not let us in untill 8:30.

Anywhos. I get to MM around 7:40ish there was no line for the Groovetickets. So no Problems there. Kris and Mike show up a little after 8 and then we walk to the VIP line. We stood there what it seemed like 4 ever! But Sarha and Extractor show up and come join us.
Finally they start letting us in.. The lady just scaned with the metal dector and let us in No Searching! I could not belive it. I had my cam. Saftly stored away just in case. I even made Kris a heart "cape" for me.. no problems bringing that in too!

Once we get in we go to VIP to Grab a quick Drink. The Drinks where so Weak imo But they where Free so really can not complain.
We head to the the meet-up spot but it was obvious that people where still getting in.
Again back to VIP then off outside to catch Nic Set. The first thing I noiced that it was really dark in the main room. Last year it was a little brigter with lasers and such. The Walk way out to the House room had no lights at all! Kinda scary...
Once out side Nic was throwing down I left his set early to go crab my spot for Markus set. Before getting the spot Kris and I went back to VIP and Markus just came in so we say hello and chat for a bit. Then it was off to get my spot. Right in the front. Markus gets on and throws down an amazing set! I held up my huge heart a lot
Ice Beach, With out you Near (closeing track), Larry Mountains 54, Matthew Dekay vs. The Proluctors - Bad ( I think, RR Workshop - Electrolux w/ Ridgewalkers Featuring El - Find , I could not stop dancing and no one could get the smile off my face. Well except for the dude that wanted to dance with me in Front of my face. But this time I said something. hehe.
After Markus, Antoine gets on and kills it. I do not know what he was playing but it was Crap! My feet where also killing me at this time so I had sit down. I think I have to break my boots in more before wearing them next time.

oh The costumes I saw the TA's wear where amazing. imo.

Short and simple....

BORING... BORING.... BORING....

The sound system in the main room can go to hell. I would rather here a 1950 AM radio. I went there for 3 reasons. Markus, Deep Dish and I've never been to MM.

Markus did not play up to par. From what I've learned, unless he is the headliner, he is not rocking it. It's hard to be satisfied when you have such high expectations of a DJ and then they give a B grade performance. His spundae and san diego (without armin) set was by far the best ever.

Deep Dish came in and hit me pretty hard. They definately were the highlight of my night. I enjoy it much better when there is both of them. The deep dish sound doesn't seem complete when only 1 person is playing. I think both of them give the balance of housey and dark progressive beats.

I dont see myself going to another MM unless armin or ferry is headlining or Mode Hookers are playing. Who knows, all I know is that the VIP was not worth it. so basically I paid $50 more to drink juice and get 1 bottle of water and sit down in a remote area. Not worth it since there is way more room upstairs and the action is still in front of you. Even the line entrace wasn't VIP for crap. Oh well, live and learn.

But the high highlight of the night was rockin @ the bobsters. Always good times hanging out with the "Usual Suspects". Who came up with that anwyays? hehe....

after bobs, went to the damn dentist to have my teeth drilled and filled! Not so much fun when you have been up all night!

Good to see and meet all the TA's again. Great bunch of bananazzzz...

Time to go nite nite.....

Mike D.

I had a good time overall, but I don't think it was worth $50.. i was a bit disappointed in the lineup, of course schulz and deep dish were decent but i was disappointed with the rest.. the sound was way off at some points to where the highs were making my ears feel like bleeding in the main room..

it was my little brother's first rave (he's 19) so i stuck around till 4am.. the last one i went to was nocturnal wonderland which was amazing, i guess MM just didn't compare..
