Parents please watch your children!

I was driving on the 401 yesterday and saw something I was quite shocked by. About 30 minutes outside of Windsor...so between Windsor and Chatham...I was going under an over pass. I look over to the side where the pillar things are to hold up the over pass, and you know how they slant down towards the 401? Well...they were covered in snow and I see 3 really young boys sliding down them onto the side of the 401! Fortunatly they weren't sliding directly ON to the 401...but it was close enough!

I was utterly disgusted by this...where are the parents?!

I continued driving, while constantly checking in my rear view mirror...and next thing I know...I see the 3 kids skipping across the 401!!! There was a median in the middle, which I didn't think the kids were even big enough to get over.

They were lucky b/c the 401 was pretty dead and the roads weren't slippery. But this was terrible. I really hope the kids didn't get hurt. I also hope that the parents found out what the kids were doing and not only disciplined them, taught them it was the wrong thing to do...but most importantly, kept a better watch on them!

If you're living that close to the 401 you need to make sure your kids understand the dangers!!

This brings a whole new meaning to parents telling their kids to "GO PLAY IN THE DAMNED HIGHWAY THEN"

the worst part is if u hit them it would be YOUR fault...

that part of the law really needs to be changed. It gives pedestrians the balls to take on 2 tonnes of steel and im sick of it.

That is bad too! Thank God I saw them in time...not that they were in the road where I could hit them when I drove by...but if someone hit them when they were running across the road...

I think I'm going to write a letter to the editor of the Windsor star or something.

That's definatly a messed up situation. the fact no one was around either is pretty lame. The parents sound retarded

What part of the law?
Could you elaborate here on how exactly it would be the driver's fault?

whenever you hit a pedestrian it is the driver's fault. And even if charges are waived, insurance will still punish you.

I am sorry, but it is not always the parents fault. Do you not remember growing up? How many times did you tell your parents you were going one place, and just go somewhere else?

My mom was an extremely good mother, and cares for me deeply, but there is no way she can know where I was all the time. Kids do stupid things, its part of their childhood.

Its true

If they end up being road pizza its no one's fault but theirs.

Put yourself in this situation... what would you have done?

i saved two little kids from being turned into "road pizza" - it didn't shock me until a few hours after.

Just last spring (i cant remember what day) driving home (Hamilton) from work approx 5pm. busy street and im stopped while waiting to make a left turn (no traffic lights). Just as there is an opening in oncoming traffic and i just begin to make my turn, two little kids (4-6yrs) with tricycles start making a dash across the road right in front of me. I stop while they're struggling to get accross and i notice a car coming up on my passenger side. I start honking at the kids to get their attention to stop, but they just keep on going. I am driving a truck and there is no way the kids or the oncoming car will see each other... I have no way of signaling the oncoming car to stop.... so at the last second i turn to into the right lane and the car stops within a few inches from me, the guy and his wife inside are screaming, honking etc.... then he sees the two kids and realized what i did. the guy got out of his car holding his head saying "oh my god" over and over.

If i made the left turn. the kids would have been dead.

the parents of the kids weren't around.

Kids...no thanks!

and it seems more and more ppl should be saying the same thing if they dont know how to take care of their children!

Posted by cyper on Dec-20-2005 03:08:

You should have told the kids to stop playing near the highway & to go start selling drugs. Problem solved.

you were one once!

sad to hear about this though. However many parents have no clue what their kids are up to.

im all for kids doing some learning for themselves, and not being overly protective lol health and saftey overload, but thats too much freedom.

I figure this is just another good example of evolution, natures way of eliminating the stupid.

Actually... there are laws that protect the driver more so than pedestrians when it involves pedestrian misuse of lanes/freeways/hwys & biwys. However, there is a new law that they want to pass that will give pedestrians more rights..and protection over drivers.

For instance, whenever a pedestrian gets hit.. while j-walking..or being somewhere on the road where there's no designated section for pedestrians to be... the driver will get off (being that they don't have any traces of Alcohol, suspended license, going the speed limit, etc..) basically..if they're driving according to the law, and a pedestrian pops out of nowhere..into a section of the rd where they shouldn't be, the driver is not at fault. Pedestrians do have the right of way at mark/designated zones, and it's always the driver's responsibility to watch out and give them the right of way.

I'd have called the cops to have those kids picked up. No one needs the trauma & guilt related to an accident.

Insurance doesn't punish you.....this is considered a collision claim...it is the only part of the policy that would cover damages for this situation....so most likely you would see an increase in your rates.
