Rogers Hi-Speed & Torrents
If you are limited from downloading torrents at a high-speed. Switch your port to 1720, this is a "voip" port that cannot be limited.
explain how to do this pleeease!
someone recently mentioned a cap of 50k/sec on stardard ports to me recently ... vrai ou faux ?
ive been having problems with torrent downloads since i moved to TO> never get much more than 20k a sec even on a really well seeded torrent. most go at 3kb. anyideas anyone? im using bitcomet.

a quick tour of torrents by me
first off if you are using anything but azureus and / or utorrent delete it and get one of those 2 clients properly updated. Why? well for a simple reason. Bitcoment and bitspirit and other clients of that sort do not have a private flag in their clients. this allows peers to connect from trackerless sites and that is a security concern for alot of other torrent sites that use the private flag. Azureus and U torrent have the private flag in their client and is highly recommended by majority of torrent sites.
now as for speeds ummm i personally do not think Rogers has anything to do with this but then again i could be wrong. i have been with them for a year and i have no issues what so ever using my torrents and my speeds are generally good even at peak hours. i normally get 95 to 125KB/s on a torrent that is seeded 20 or more. i use azuresus and am on a router. as Orko said if you guys are on a router please make sure your ports are forwarded from the router as well. that way the tracker sees open ports and when you are leeching its a open connection. forwardng ports from the router and having open ports on your computer without the router is something i can compare to having green lights all the way through downtown toronto traffic at 5pm
another couple of things to comment on regarding speeds. first off limit your upload speed. it does have effect on your download speed. try to grab torrents that are well seeded. limit the number of simultaneous connections and simultaneous uploads. those 2 are not that same
and all of those options can be found in tools of your torrent client.
for port forwading please see here

i left alot of the technical shit out but if you do not understand anything then just try to google general torrent help or drop me a line and i be happy to help u in any way i can. although keep in mind my help is limited to Azureus client ONLY
.
common someone post a good port.

. try to stay away from 6000 series ports though as they are majorly used. go in late 7000 or as the first post mentions go to 1720
I'm using sympatico + d link router w/ bitcomet my speed is only 40 - 50 K Max .... is there anything I can do to speed up the Ks?
My sister's house, I'm running Sympactio + Azureus w/o a router and I'm pushing 200k.
Any help will do pls ...
Thanks
John
PS. On Limewire & SoulSeek I can push upto 200Ks.
i cant tell ... but i hope you are not actually serious John ^^^^ lolz
I called rogers, they are limiting torrent speed in high traffic areas.

the trick with torrents is using a good tracker.. if you are using Torrentspy, there is a higher likelihood of leechers to seeder ratios, which is gonna slow your download.. so find a good private tracker... i personally use Araditracker.com, but you have to watch out for your ratio's because private trackers will ban you for having a poor ratio.
if you are using BitComet, get rid of it, it was handy due to it using encrypted packets, which of course was handy cause Roger's couldn't track your bandwidth use, but as trancegrooves said, there are serious security flaws with that program. ( as well, 98% of private trackers will not allow access from bitcomet users.)
there isn't much you can do to "speed" up your download, it's a P2P based system, you are only gonna get, what other people are giving. hence the use of private trackers, cause the majority of people seed with good speeds.
Limiting your torrent program to use only one port, will actually slow down your download, whereas if you let your torrent program handle it, you can accept more incoming cconnections. I usually have at leasst 8-12 torrents going at any one time.
now when i did live in Toronto, i did notice speed difference in the services from rogers, this is due to the population density of your network. Toronto's network is much more busier than say hmmm Waterloo's.
NOTE: if you are on Rogers and downloading excessively, you must watch your CAP.. Roger's has a 60 gig a month cap, you can monitor this by loging into Rogers.ca and viewing your internet usage.
for those of you on a router.. i have no suggestions, as i hate routers, always a pain in the ass. you want to open a range of ports for your torrent program to utilize..
i max out my connection while i'm at work, usually pulling at least 600k/s
