In your opinion is trance getting better or worse?
I've noticed that lately, I don't find myself as "aroused" by trance as I used to. Tracks have become too predictable, lots of choons sound just like the next, and overall originality has gone down.
Sure, the supply has grown as well - which could explain influx of crappy music. But do you find yourself moving away from trance to other styles to fill the void? I noticed that I have become more of a melodic prog fan and most recently even started to notice strange liking of housey/techy/hard(er) trance stuff.
So, what do you think will be the latest "in" thing in 2006 - Marriage of house+trance or prog+trance or even harder/darker/techier trance?
personally I was never into trance all that much. it was a gateway to EDM for me but I moved away from it pretty fast. I still love to listen to the occasional trancer from time to time and I love the old school stuff but other than progressive I would never consider seriously mixing it.
But it has definetly been on a steady decline since about '02 (if not earlier). either that or the good stuff is just harder to find.
Not at all in my personal opinion, 2004 was an amazing year for trance production-wise and 2005 was pretty good too
I feel positive about it, there's more and more good stuff to add to the quality old stuff each month

Well, if trance is getting better it is probably because it is being infused by House/Techno. It definitely seems that housey trance is beginning to prevail. Tunes like "tracking treasure down" or "Breathe" are making their way into trance dj's box. When I heard AvB drop "Breathe" - I knew that even self-proclaimed trance DJ was on a new trail.
I feel that if trance is to get better it will have to become more blended with other "nearby" styles - prog/tech/house. Even now, many so-called "trance" tunes are had to classify as trance. Which will ultimately lead to trance being completely dissolved as a separate style.
i htink its still good. i mean i dont listen to it anymore but if i followed it im shure there would be awsome tracks here and there.
i think one of the problems now a days with music in general, alot of shit tracks are going around, i guess its easier to
1. make a track
2. get it signed and put up for download which as before u had to get it on vinyl.
but i htink things are still looking good in the scene.
my 2cents.
I'll just cutnpaste what I said before, since these conversations recycle themselves:
It's because the novelty of trance music has worn off on you after listening to so many hundreds of sets, so many DJs, and its all meshing into a "been there, done that" feeling. The rollercoaster is never as exciting the 500th time you go on it than it is the first time you ride on it. In short, it's because the music has no sustenance, it is cheap, shallow, and gimmicky, and you are drifting away from it because each subsequent use is not giving you the same high as before, so to speak. You are burning out.
My advice: go away. Move on, and listen to something else for awhile.
it's definitely not getting better.
97, 99 and 02 were awesome years
darker/hearder/techy stuff will rule all in 06

I cant wait until Im an old man and people are like 1990's trance was so much better than turn of the century trance but it redemmed itself in the 2010's but this younger generation of 2020's trance is such water downed BS.
in my opinion its getting better!
I've pretty much stopped listening to it.
i think its getting worse.. in terms of mainstream trance at least. as nchos said before its easier for almost anyone to make tracks with the easy availability to purchase/*cough*download* music production software. although there are some releases here and there that i find to be pretty spectacular, there is a lot more horseshit to sift thru to find them
ive moved more towards prog trance, prog house, and house in the beginning of 05 because trance isn't doing it for me anymore.. i think the last trance cd that i enjoyed was oakenfolds creamfields
it's not getting worse par se, it's just that the easily accessible stuff is, and overpopulation of complete & utter bullshit. There is still some good trance about, but it's harder to find. Best stuff lately is coming from Marcel Woods & SvD. The rest is pretty hard to listen to. As for other 'trance' the goa/psy side has improved over the last 12 months, with new ideas being used & some good artist albums.
For progressive, you can't beat progpsy, esp the swedish take on it, son kite, human blue etc.
Apart from that, I listen to oldskool rave, drum & Bass, techno & ambient/chillout to satisfy my needs
for melodic trance it's just getting worse and worse. very few light glimpses.
what keeps progtrance alive is mainly the constant flow of quality progpsy productions.

Just listen to X-Dreams latest album. It borrow loads of elements from electro. Personally I'm quite fed up with the full on sound atm. not many really good releases out there nowadays. |

I had a great time in 2003 as well.
I havent gotten out as much in 2005 as I would have liked, I do enjoy that things are changing, upheaval is great fun. I've heard alot of music I like recently, I think our old definitions for music are becoming less relevant and that we need new ones. The old categories are mostly declining because people are trying new things that dont fit in those categories anymore.
In terms of straight up trance, its gone balls up. I stopped trying to dig through all the cheesy shit to find anything decent a couple of years ago. Theres still some good stuff out there I'm sure, but the general climate of trance has gotten so incredibly soft and polished, its kinda starting to sound like themes to movies or something. Works for some people though I guess.
In terms of psy, yes full on can get a bit boring sometimes. Theres some great freaky stuff coming out of india and russia at the moment though... very experiemntal and techy psy. Also been getting into a few of the Japanese producers lately. Good stuff!

= the more pr0n you see, the less you are excited by seeing the same 'ol thing. Same with trance (at least for me) - just plain' ol trance don't do it. I need some musical hardcore to get turned on.
