Guardian Angels

I was just walking down Yonge St. and saw a few members of The Guardian Angels patroling the street. They seemed very friendly and were shaking hands with people up and down the street.I was happy to see them there and thought that it was a good sign.

David Miller and the chief of police have been outspoken saying they think that it is a bad idea to have them here, and that the only thing that needs to be done is to have an increased police presence.

Personally I think that Miller and the chief of police are being naive thinking that first of all they will increase the police presence in an effective way, and that having the guardian angels here in any way impedes police progress. I feel like Miller is worried that them being here makes the problems in toronto more high profile, and that is the reason he doesn't want them here.

For those of you who don't know the guardian angels are a volunteer group of people based in new york that started with the purpose of stopping gang violence. They do not carry guns and are easty to recognize because they wear red jackets and berrets.

What do you guys think, should they be here? Is it helpful or harmful?

I saw it on Tv the other day. I think its a good thing for the city but I think gangs will target them now. I wouldn;t be surprised if any are injured in the next month!

hell's angels vs guardian angels.

im putting my money on hell's angel's, sorry to say

I saw a snippit of this story on the news. Heard they were here a number of years ago and the community didn't like it. And I questioned why? They are here to help and do good. They are volunteers and obviously care about spreading the good work they've done elsewhere.

Good point about the "high profile thing" by having them here - that never dawned on me. But I certainly hope Miller and the Police Chief aren't trying to supress the gang/violence issue we have. I say bring on all the help and support we can get before it REALLY gets out of hand. I bet they have a lot of expertise and this being a relatively new situation for Toronto, we need to rely on people who've seen this before and have worked through it successfully.

The red jackets are cool too!

get the guns away from these kids, send in the cops to infiltrate the gangs and their weapons. If the cops can't cut it send in the fucking army.

I say, "Good".

They're law abiding citizens and not some vigilante group out there folks.
They know their stuff and are willing to do what most of us would only think about.
I'm happy they're here!!

I dont' know enough about them to say it's "good" or "bad"...but I do respect their ideals and efforts...just not sure how they will be received in 2006.

Rather than "policing", their goal seems to be more to educate, raise awareness, and get people involved in the community instead of ignoring the problems occuring in their own neighbourhoods.

good!

I think it could be a good idea.. although if I were in their position, I think I may be a little concered for my own safetly wouldn't you? Especially if you don't have the support from the city itself..

Posted by VERTiG0 on Jan-14-2006 09:17:

So they're a volunteer group who look like the French Foreign Legion?

Posted by 7-4-7 on Jan-14-2006 16:23:

I think its kinda cool, don;t know how effective they are, but they are like common day mercenaries....lose the hats, strap on helmets.

miller is a left wing thinker. Left wingers generally think that the government can do better than the private citizen. This is why i think they are against the guardian angels. I cant believe this idiot of a mayor wont even give them 5 minutes of his time to listen to what they have to say.

I hope we all remember miller's ignorance on election day this november.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Jan-14-2006 21:08:

come on tho what are they really gonna do? talk to the gangs? see if they have a compassionate side and try to talk them away from the violent crimes and drug money?

*in tears*

"you're right the person i was really fighting was myself, *sniff*, ill put away the arms and we can live in peace, but first i have to make an apology to someone....myself *cries*"

*angels and gang leader hug and swap presents*

I think people watch too many movies

Their primary function isn't to be a citizen police force.

read up on their current work/mission:

bah ill stay ignorant on the issue and keep the image i have of them now with british police hats and and billy clubs running around to benny hill music

I like what they stand for, unfortunately they didn't arrange anything with the local police commissoner (?) which is why they're getting the boot and told to leave by Monday.

I don't understand why they wouldn't have at least made their presence known to the local authorities.
He was flagged at the airport appearantly and only given 3 days to stay in Canada to begin with.

Its obvious the pride of the police is in the way in this which is sad really.
Miller, having solved all other problems apparently, needs tell us a little more of his plan to stop all this gun violence rather than kicking out a potential solution, regardless of source...

bunch of lamers.
f00kin homo wannabe hero's/cops.

I think they need to leave....again. third times a charm. Hopefully theyll be gone for good.

They have no more power then the rest of us. Im sure they are nice people but I think they need to jump off a bridge.

so its bassically like taking the club bouncers allow them to roam the streets with a red barret on and attack gangs?

sure they are trained in self defence. but are they really going to be able to stand up to a gun?

These aren't amateur civilian hooligans, they've been in business for over 25 years and are around the world for a reason; I think it's safe to say they know what they're doing...

Posted by Euphorica on Jan-15-2006 17:50:

they are trained in the art of dodging bullets from semi automatic guns.

Posted by runningman on Jan-15-2006 17:55:

if they are backed by the government the gangs can't touch them.. the gang will lose to the government everytime..

Unless of course, you're coming to Toronto, where (worse than) status quo is just fine

Miller and some GTA area social workers I've seen interviewed seemed to be against the idea because they feel the Angels are taking over their turf. I think they need to swallow their pride. Toronto should take any help they can get.

So they will talk to some black pastor from boston who got paid to make a speech and nothing more yet they wont talk to a bunch of guys who are willing to take a hands on approach that has worked in 20 other countries?

I cant help to think that had this played out in the opposite way the accusations of racism would be flying everywhere.

Time to give miller and his wussy city council the big boot this november.

The difference being that Rev. (forgot his name already... someone help me out)'s solution will be one that the city can spearhead. If it works the city counsel looks good. The Guardian Angels are a group overwhich the counsel will have no influance. Subsequently, the city does not want to see them involved as if they have a noteable impact it will be egg on the face of the city and the TPS.

I think such ego in matters of this importance is reprehensible, however, that is the reason for the current situation.
