DJ Tiesto - A Tear In The Open (Original)
I know, i know - It's from 2004, it is by Tiesto and "Tiesto is responsible for everything in and between Iraq war, Alaska oil spill and bad-trance".
That asides, how many of you feel that this is the most underrated and one of the best tracks in the last couple of years?
Even the most hardcore Tiesto fans don't list it in their favourites, so i often wonder why it didn't get the plaudits it deserved?
It's one of my alltime favourites though and i rely it as the most trusted track to pump it up, especially on long drives. In my opinion, this track is a classic and maybe the trance-addicts of the next generation might be able to appreciate it more.
It's a good tune but I feel the production could use some tightening up - especially in the percussions. Tisto's standard perc set just doesn't work in this one.
Also, not mixed enough!

It's probably the best from the Just Be album, though that's not a very difficult standard to meet. Good track, but it's overshadowed by earlier productions in a broader scope of Tiesto's career.
I think a techier remix of the track could have really made it big. The original lacks an edge that seems it should have.
definately the best of the of the album i really like it though i agree with cobalt in that a techier harder remix would have been amazing of it.
The vocals have an interesting history (research thanks [groovypants]!), and have been used in many tracks prior to A Tear In The Open:
Signum - Cura Me
OTT - Splitting An Atom
Pole Folder & CP - Dust
Angel Tears - Ishka
etc
I think the popular sample used in dance tracks originally comes from the Gaelic band Capercaillie, but that's just a guess from what I've read.
No lyrics available!
I think this review by someone sums up the track appropriately.

DJ Tisto - A Tear In The Open Tisto visits gaelic grounds with this haunting epic tune, whose lyrics reflect a love long lost. The track starts up with ethereal vocals and classical elements before a solid bass groove takes over. The track builds up with guitar like twangs and percussion before the break which introduces dark and menacing pads which, when added to the bassline, drive the tune with a lot of power. A second break adds the vocals, then its straight back to the pads which scream away to the end of the track. A true track which recalls the golden era of trance. Impressive stuff!

Meh. It's not bad, but I think it's far from the best tiesto production. And I'd consider myself a tiesto fan when it comes to his productions.

Not so much Tear in the Open, but Im surprised that the Nyana single didnt get a hell of a lot more exposure. Everyone whored over the Adagio remix, which isnt that great, and left Nyana to gather dust.

it's pretty good. took some time to get a little used/into it tho - first couple of listens i wasn't a fan...but it grew on me.
once you even mentioned that song i realized that ive always wanted to know what the lyrics translate into...does anyone know what she is saying...or is it just sounds?

Originally posted by Mr.Mystery Hardly surprising since Nyana is the weakest tune on the album. Uninspiring melody, weak production, just plain boring. In the same series with his remix of Breezer... It's the only track on the album that doesn't credit anyone else and it clearly shows.
Great track! but the best track from the album is "Walking On Clouds"
It would be glad to know that

Um, I posted a link to the lyrics and translation in a previous post to this thread.

it's definitely a good track.. pretty minimal, but that's what i like about it. i like the way it slowly builds up to short but huge climax where all of the underlying emotions are released.
i agree it does not compare to some of his older tracks, but it's a solid track nonetheless
Blame it on the color scheme

Originally posted by [ groovypants ] Obviously with plenty time on my hands - I was doing a bit of googling and found some info on this track. The original song was written in 1788 by Annie Campbell. She was supposed to be married with sea-captain Allan Morrison, but he and his crew sailed into a storm and sank onto the way to see her. She wrote and dedicated the song "AILENN DUINN" [Dark Allan] to him - and she died a few months later - her body found washed ashore right where Allan was found a few months before. It is indeed in Gaelic and the rendition by Capercaillie is slightly different. There is also a play based on this song and story, written by Tormod Domhnallach. The lyrics to the actual song - the lines in bold are the ones that we know of [Cura Me, A Tear in The Open, etc] : Gura mise tha fo islean Moch sa' mhadainn is mi 'g irigh h, shiubhalainn leat... H r bh, h r bh H r bh, h rinn h Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat Ma 's e 'n cluasag dhut a ghaineamh Ma 's e leabaidh dhut an gheamainn h, shiubhalainn leat... H r bh, h r bh H r bh, h rinn h Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat Ma 's en t-iasg do choinlean geala Ma 's na rin do luchd-faire h, shiubhalainn leat... H r bh, h r bh H r bh, h rinn h Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat Dh'lainn deoch ge boil le cch e D dh'fhuil do choim 's tu 'n Didh do bhathadh... h, shiubhalainn leat... H r bh, h r bh H r bh, h rinn h Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat English Translation: How sorrowful I am When I rise early in the morning, h I would walk with you. H ri bh.... o h, Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you If the sand be your pillow, If the seaweed be your bed, h I would walk with you H ri bh.... o h, Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you If the fish are your candles bright, If the seals are your watchmen, h I would walk with you H ri bh.... o h, Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you I would take a drink, though everyone would be scandalised, Of your heart's blood after you were drowned... h I would walk with you H ri bh.... o h, Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you.
