-- dj's going up or down?
Pages (2): [1] 2 »
wow.. first EVER thread on here..
anyway, what just came to my mind is that many of the SUPPOSED 'worlds big name dj's'... such as oakey, pvd, sasha, seaman, digweed, jules (i beg to differ), fontaine, etc... they are still considered to be at their best by many, but personally, i think that most of these names reached their peaks like years ago.. sasha was at his best around 95, van dyk at his best 99-00 (arguable), oakey at his best some 2-3 years ago when he was still resident at cream.
One of the only few names i can think of who have consistently amazed me is Dave Seaman, nick warren, avb, tiesto, parks & wilson, and pvd(but thats because i worship him)..
do you people agree that most djs have gone past their peak? and that many of those who have been consistently good in the djing have been underrated?
well anyway, that just came into my mind..
Oakie has definately GONE DOWN! His last 2 shows in NYC were mediocre. He's a $ hungry sell out. He's stale & too mellow. His style hasn't progressed & he's still spinning Bullet in the Gun.
Digweed is on top. GU 19 is Brilliant! He is by far the Best Mixer in the industry. Pvd's style has drastically changed from dreamy epic trance to a harder progressive sound. It's great how he's evolved. His 2 anniversary at Twilo is comin up (April 13th) He's definately on Top! Mauro Picotto is getting some serious recognition. He Blew the roof off of Twilo on Dec 15th!
The sound right now isn't trance its progressive house from the Nubreed's: Pappa, Danny Howells, Steve Lawler. They're on Top of the game. Sander Kleinenberg is making his first U.S appearance March 23th.
Tiesto
About Tiesto...
i dlded his Live at israel...apparently recent...he plays the same tracks again and again.
PVD rox !! i mean....he rox !! real hard stuff....i heard the live in berlin (its available for dld here) and it blew me off.
Armin is also excellent in mixing...he plays some cool stuff.Ferry Corsten is also on top.
i've never heard any of Kleinenberg's live...his songs rock though.which country is he from ?
kleinenberg is quality live as well..
he's dutch.. sometimes referred to as the flying dutchman =p.. and the thing is that not many dj's kinda fit into the sound he's into, which makes him that much more cooler =p..
Sander Kleinenberg is Dutch I guess.
There's a slight chance that somebody corrects me mentioning that Kleinenberg is actually Belgian, but I don't think so.
I just saw that on Napster there's a set of Kleinenberg's.
Live at Impulz. Check it out, I will too.

LOL @ Twilogoddess! I'm sorry but what u said was funny, u say PvD spins the same stuff but your sig. says "PvD is god". Don't take any offence to it, I just thought it was funny
it doesn't matter what tracks pvd plays.. as long as they sound good and get the crowd dancing
Oakenfold & PVD
I had the opportunity to see Oakey at Nation the day after Thanksgiving. In all honesty, I didn't know what to expect. What I got was pretty diesel.
D:Fuse spun his last record, Oakey takes the phones, stops the currently playing tune by killing the power, lights go off, and out of nowhere Animal by LostIt.com comes screaming in.
I've never seen that many people go nuts, and yes, I have seen PVD live. Yes, I had MORE fun at PVD but I was more amazed at Oakey's set -- it was harder than what you hear on his latest mixes, almost like a Goa Mix 2000. It was a lesson in "How to do trance in only 2 hours."
I'm just saying, don't base your judgement off of CD's that hit the shelves or MP3's on Naptster, base them off of parties you've went to personally. (For instance, no one has a mix of PVD's Twilo sets which are fucking amazing -- 9+ hours? Diesel.
)
Regards,
Arkainjel
ps. Twilogoddess, surely you don't think PVD should retire "For an Angel" or any of his other signature songs.
) If he DID have to, it'd be a tough choice of which to eliminate. But then again, when you rock any party for literally half a day/night, you don't have to be stingy.

I still think Van Dyke is excellent
i think pvd plays them because he plays what He likes.. or so he claims.. and its pretty evident that no matter what he plays.. the crowd is still craving for more rite??
ABSOLUTELY!
But DJ's like Sasha, Digweed always spin new tracks. Their sets are always fresh. Sasha doesn't spin expander every month & Digger's doesn't spin heaven scent.
PVD...
PVD is God! The new harder shitt he spins is what i think is the growing trend in most of the top DJ's in the last year or so.
About that old songs business, i think that its cool to sometimes hear an old favourite that you know thrown in a live set.

~~I have nothing catchy to write~~
i think we are judging a little too harsh on these djs.. think about it like this..
you say pvd, oakie, etc all play the same stuff, but you hear it on the live sets.. if a person is spinning 15 locations a month, do you think they are going to make something different at every set? of course not.. it's like any concert.. all concert acts are pretty much similar
i personally think christopher lawrence is gonna make some headlines....but pvd....no offence but for some reason i just dont like him...have u guys heard forbidden fruit(its awful) his best was for an angel...plz someone tell me if im very very wrong and give me some better suggestion of pvd listening that i may not have heard of!
thnx
Well, this might be a little un-educated because I havent seen em live, but Oakie and Dave Seaman consitantly amaze me and all CDs I have heard by them are incredible
So, as far as live shows go, they may be getting stale, but like BigTongue said, it's not really possible to come up with new stuff all the time...however, i do think that Oakie needs to give "Bullet in the Gun" a rest...i never really liked that track

lol.. no way Welcome to the Dance is Pvd produced..
i don't even think theres a pvd MIX.. =p
airscape remix which isn't all that. Des Mitchell is on his label...y do u think he plays it soo much?
I don't think tiesto is going down people! Other Dj's always copy him! Like jean at TE, he also started with push - universal nation like tiesto did at the first innercity! His energy 2000 set has also been partly copied by djs! At this moment everyone thinx that Mauro Picotto is tha man! Hes OK but he hasn't created records like Tiesto has created, such as all the kamaya painters!
Tiesto is definitly not going down!
Cu
Who said Tiesto is going down?
Whoever said that is clueless. Tiesto was the MAN of 2000 w/his Silence remix & Magik 6 Release. He's constantly pumpin out new tracks & remixes. Urban Train is aight.
Come on Paul van Dyk plays the remixes of his tunes because it sounds good and it fits well in the set, and people like that. His live sets are more energetic than his own albums: sell what people like and play what people like. A very smart DJ. I think Tiesto has gotten better recently in his work with Delerium and Armin vB. AvB on the other hand is truely a rising star, both his compilations and live sets are smooth, rhythmic, flows just like trance should flow. Packs a punch somewhere near the end. Ferry Corsten has done extremely well in the past 3 years. He consistently comes up with tracks that blow your mind away. I also agree Oakenfold is not what he used to be...
Couple of DJs I can't stand are Judge Jules, Mauro, Timo Maas. What kind of music do these people play? Me banging on a garbage can with a 2x4 sounds better than the crap they put out.
Hey..
You dont like Jules? I think him and Corsten spin the same energetic hard shi^t.
The same I mean in style, gets your blood pumping.
