Unhappy i just got a ticket

my first one ever...my first time even being pulled over.

88 in a 65

now i have to pay my own insurance...i make $5.15 an hour, can only work 17 hours a week and i'm a full-time student. i dunno what i'm gonna do

i know i call the courthouse or whatever after 5 days...but how do i find out how much it is? and do i not have to pay it if i take defensive driving? i just haven't gone thru this before, i need some help.

that'll teach you for being on TA while you're driving.

option 1: go to driving school (which will cost $20), and get it reduced to a parking ticket and only 2 points (you should get 4-5 for going 23 over), and pay $120, with your insurance going up a little when they find out.

option 2: don't go to driving school, pay $150, and get 4-5 points, making your insurance skyrocket.

option 3: dress sexy and cry in court, and tell him your school and work situation. this is your best chance.

Posted by _Nut_ on Feb-27-2006 18:40:

You will have to pay regardless.

Traffic school will keep it off your record (pending a 6 month probationary period) and keep your insurance rates where they are now. Else look forward to hiked up rates!

In Montreal you can contest a ticket, and then they don't answer you for like 8 months, at which point you can either go to court or just pay the ticket...I'm sure that would buy you enough time to save up the money.

But it's probably not like that in Texas or wherever it was you lived.

Posted by Ted Promo on Feb-27-2006 18:46:

Yeah, just do the defensive driving. I haven't gotten a ticket before, but I have taken defensive driving to lower my rates. It's roughly $250, but it's a one time deal. I took the version where it's just one day, eight hours, 2 in a classroom, the other six were extensive road tests that kicked my ass for a good portion of the day. I can actually say I felt like a better driver after taking the course as well.

Just recently i got fucked big time....

but instead of paying shit loads of tickets they gave me 95 hours community service.

They gave me till march 24 to complete them.

Or just be a big girl and accept the fact you were wrong, instead of looking for excuses.

Posted by jdat on Feb-27-2006 18:50:

It really depends from one state to another so you better call the courthouse asap.

Didn't they directly give you a date to appear in court when the ticket was issued?

Posted by DigitalMP on Feb-27-2006 18:52:

This isn't the $250 defensive driving - that's for peopel who want to lowr their insurance.

This defensive driving is for people who get a ticket, and you have to go in order to get your tickets points reduced.

Also, you can call and have your court date adjourned once or twice (ask for a month because of school/vacation or whatever), so you get a couple more months, then a month till driving school, then a month to pay, then get an extension on that, so you can have time to save up the money.

Posted by grooviebeats on Feb-27-2006 18:54:

in fl we go to court plea no contest they wave the points and all you have to do is pay the fine... big bad isurance never hears about it.. hahaha... i got tickets out the butt but only 2 points (got ticket in another county and wasnt able to go to court).

Posted by shades_of_gray on Feb-27-2006 19:08:

Sucks mate, i got stopped doing 43 in a 30 zone at 2 o'clock one morning, got away with no points, just a 60 fine

well I never. My nan got her first ever ticket on a road with no speed signs we were taking my brother to the hospital from school as he'd got a suspected broken ankle & the asshole cop gave her hell, she was doing 47 in what he said was a 40, 2 weeks later signs go up, at 50 The wanker made her feel like shit and kept us from taking him for 15 mins as he was so rude. She wanted to reverse over him & flatten him but there were other cars about

I'll happily admit there are situations where there are more important things than speed limits. Policemen should be more aware of that as well.

The one this thread was started for does not really seem like one to me, though.

Say you were drunk and too groggy to see the speedometer clearly.

/fyi 88 in a 65 might be reckless driving depending on the state you're in.

it differs from state to state. in ms, for example, defensive driving school gets your ticket completely off the record, but you have a 2-year probation, and can go to that defensive driving school only if you're under 21. it costs somewhere around $30 here - just a 2.5 hour lecture.

as a general advice for future, as long as you go not more than 8-10 mph over the speed limit, the chances of you getting pulled over are very slim. my boss is always driving around 10 over the limit, and hasn't had a single ticket in more than 14 years!

and yeah, 23 over the limit is a fucking lot. in ms, anything over 15 is already considered a reckless driving with a whole different punishment.

man i hear ya heheh sucks when you get a tix but ok .. here is what i did

they cought me doing 100 over in 80 zone so i told the cop i got to go an take a crap he didnt belive me so he didnt let me go an shit so i went to court an shit in like first 10 min my lawyer presented my case ... and i was offf that tix :d now im fighing 3 other ones :d so just make some crap up

thats if your in canada

Posted by Jocker on Feb-27-2006 19:56:

oh yeah, as for the court date...

the cop who gave you the ticket has to appear in court personally. if you can adjourn the court date to a date when he's on vacation or something (i dunno how you're gonna find that out) and he won't be able to appear in court, the court will rule in your favor.

that's also if you want to pay $300 an hour for a lawyer to get you off a ticket

Posted by makija on Feb-27-2006 20:08:

haha no :d i paid like half price of my ticket it was well over 600 $ so i will rather give 300 to him to get it off then pay full price and plus get shit on my liscense right ?

we got a ticket specialist in winnipeg who does that job he was a cop an man he can put thoes tickets off my friend is still fighting tickets like that he got 3 years ago so why not

Nothing but Maniacs on I-4...
You get the maniacs switching lanes going 90 combined with those on their cell phones going 20...Florida was a f.ucking learning experience in evasive driving techniques.

Isn't minimum wage $6.15?

But seriously, I just got a ticket for 65 in a 55. I didn't give the cop any bullshit and I plan on paying the ticket. I knew damn well I was going above the speed limit. Responsibilities the game, cracka killa.

your assuming that having that low of a speed limit is correct.

what id do is look through the yellowpages and talk to people about lawyers to take care of the ticket. Here in vegas a lawyer can get any speeding violation reduced to a parking ticket easily and you only pay a parking ticket fine. I got a ticket for 60 in a 35 and only had to pay $140, no points, and nothing else.

good luck, and fight the power.
