Favorite Flag?
What is your favorite flag?
To me the Confederate flag represents the greatest period in American history, and what a great place North America would be now had the South won.

ALABAMA
After sundown no peanuts may be sold. (Lee County) If you attach a lantern in your vehicle, it is allowed to drive the wrong direction of a one-way street.
Indeed, it is allowed to ALASKA to shoot a bear, but to wake up a bear from the sleep, to do a photo of him in the intention, is forbade.
ARIZONA you may have at most 2 Dildos in a house. Donkeys may not sleep in bathtubs. It is forbade for men and women from the 18-th year to have one visible dental gap more than if they smile. (Tombstone)
CALIFORNIA persons ugly are called, may use no sidewalk. (San Franzisco)
COLORADO cats may not run around without light in the tail freely. On Sundays the driving by a black car is forbade to (sterling). (Denver) horses and stack donkeys may stay within the town if they are in a building only in the first floor.
FLORIDA Of Thursday after 18 o'clock farting is forbade on public places. With the sexual intercourse only the "missionary's position" is permitted. If women use utensils in the bathtub to improve in appearance, and, besides, are killed, they can be punished for it. Indeed, only after your death.
NEW JERSEY If you were punished for a drunkenness journey, you may never again apply for a desirable sign for your car.
NEW YORK you may greet nobody, while you put your thumb in the nose and wobble with the fingers.
OHIO of Sunday and on the 4th July nobody may be arrested. Women may carry no leather shoes in the general public. More than 5 women may not live in a house.
OKLAHOMA prostitutes them were punished to appeal to suitor (this is forbade), are shown on television with naming of the name and with photo. On the back seat of a car no paper tissues may lie.
TEXAS A recently adopted Anti-criminal's law obliges criminals to inform her victims 24 hours before the action about it.
VIRGINIA a woman may go by the car not on the main street, unless, her husband runs ahead and swings a red flag at the warning. (Waynesboro) a husband has the right to hit his woman on the steps of the courthouse. Indeed, only before 20 o'clock

Originally posted by Demoted If we're talking about a flag in the aesthetic sense, then why did you bring up the fact that North America would be great if the South had won? The South represented slavery as well as many other negative factors, and although I don't necessarily believe all of the Confederate leaders were all bad, they certainly weren't the people I would have sided with. But if we're talking about a flag, keep it about the flag, I find it hard to believe you think North America would be better solely because the South had a better looking flag.

Originally posted by JimWein We are talking about the aesthetic properties of the flag, which I think would make America a better nation if it was the national flag (it looks nicer). But also I prefer the Southern States, the culture is great. The food is better, the French influence in parts is great, the literature etc. People in the US often forget that many of the people in their country are from the South and it is offensive to suggest that everything to do with the Southern culture is racist. Don't forget there were also slaves in the North and around the world. So I like the look of the flag, and the Southern way of life but not the racism, this has nothing to do with race.

Originally posted by Demoted You have to understand the fact that the Confederate flag is synonymous with slavery and racism. Sure, the South might have a great culture and whatnot (I live in Georgia, and I can agree partially, but I came from up North). You couldn't just walk onto any online forum, brandish a Nazi flag saying it represents the greatest period in German history because of the awesome wienerschnitzel made in that time, the good music, and the overall apathetic discourse of the populous, and expect everyone to just say "Man, he is like, soooo not racist loll0rx".

Originally posted by JimWein Big, big difference. The south supported slavery at a time when it was (unfortunately) not universally hated, the image of the confederate flag also is not banned (unlike the swastika), and is still used in southern state flags. The confederate flag now represents the south as a whole, and it's culture (unlike anything to do with Nazi Germany). The nazi flag represented Hitler's awful crimes, and even though back in those days the world was not quite as accepting as it is now they were still very much disgusting crimes even for the period. The American civil war was not only about slavery, infact the link with slavery has been built up to something it wasn't. Many in the north at the time supported slavery and many in the south did not. This has nothing to do with slavery, racism or anything like that. and if people are offended by one person liking the flag and what it stands for surely they should be much more offended that it's still in use as a state flag?

And while some of those in the deep south who brandish a Confederate flag on every possible piece of fabric in their life might agree with you that they use the Confederate flag more as a flag to signify their culture as a whole, there are many more who are trying to look beyond that flag as cultural representation. Notice how Georgia no longer has a Confederate flag anywhere in their state flag, much like South Carolina. |
