Car rant thread

screw pepboys first of all! i swear i should have just taken my car to my mechanic for the extra $40. he's not exactly cheap, but he's honest and his mechanics aren't morons and the job gets done on time, and the right way, every single time i've taken my car to him for the past like 8 years.

anyway, i needed brake pads and roters and i dropped my damn car off at pepboys at like 11:30 in the morning yesterday. i call areound 4:30 in the afternoon to make sure it's done or almost done because i was leaving my job at 5 to go get it. of course they're like, "yea yea, it's almost done, bla bla bla"

i swear to god they didn't start working on it until i got there at 5:30. i had my mom drop me off so she wouldn't have to wait with me. i'm there for about 45 minutes when the manager (has a gold tooth by the way...nice) comes to me and explains that they put the wrong brake pads in. my car doesn't need the kind with sensors, yada yada. i'm like, "ok, so what are you telling me? do you have the right ones in stock?"

they check...and fortunately they did, but now i have to wait for them to put them in. i'm pissed, but i'm glad that they at least have the right ones there. so i'm waiting around and about 45 minutes later, they tell me that the roters they have are a tad bit too big and they don't have the right ones in stock and there's no way they can fix my car that night. so i had to call my mom to come back and get me and i couldn't go home that night and had to stay with her. i'm fucking PISSED! i swear to god everyone in that store last night was a degenerate fucking retard. no sense of urgency in any of the employees, just goofing off and shit. i sat there while this mechanic was on the phone with a customer and he must have answered the same question like 5 times.

"well, we get a new shipment in tomorrow around noon, so you can come back tomorrow and get it"

"yea, at noon. i would say come back around this time"

"yea, well the shipment comes in at 12:00, so i mean...yea, just come in tomorrow around this time and we should have it"

"it's going to be 59.99. yea usually the shipment gets here anywhere between 11:00 and 12:00, but i would say come in later in the afternoon"

i felt like grabbing the goddamn phone from him and screaming, "ARE U FUCKING RETARDED! COME BACK TOMORROW AFTER NOON! DID HE STUTTER?"

and the mechanic is an idiot for letting a line form in front of him with impatient customers just so he can answer the same question over and over.

oh yea and german cars suck by the way. i've had more damn problems with my VW than my boyfriend has ever had with his old lexus that has 200k miles on it. i swear his car runs smoother than mine and i have like 75k miles on it and i have a turbo too. over engineered pieces of crap. i used to be all about german cars, but man screw that. when i can finally afford a brand new luxury car, i'm going with a lexus.

haha nice..drink some vodka to calm down

Posted by CONNERMAN2000 on Apr-26-2006 13:30:

lexus does pwn to the max. my dad had at 93 and it died at 270,000, which is pretty damn good for a car that was driven at least 3 hours a day EVERY day.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Apr-26-2006 13:31:

throw some kahlua in your coffee and you'll be alright =)

mechanics are like that unfortunately lol

that's why you have to find your own mechanic and always stick with them. sucks unfortunately

haha I have about 10 friends who work in the car industry. german cars are like those pretty decorative samurai swords you see. real nice to look at but once you "use" it the way it's meant to be used, it breaks. german cars generally have 8-10 defects per hundred. japanese cars are down to 2-4 according to the statistics that my controls engineering friends tell me. japanese all the way.

Posted by Slylee on Apr-26-2006 13:39:

well i'm getting a fat discount...i still don't think it's worth it though.

i feel bad for my mechanic. i actually called him yesterday when i got the quote from pepboys and i wanted to know if it was like in the ball park, or if they were ripping me off. he said the price sounded about right.

he knows i'm not like loaded and that i was trying to save a few bucks, but man, am i sorry i didn't take it to him. i used to have an old bmw and i took it to him all the time, and i'd go in there and explain to him what i thought was wrong. like, "yea i think i need new spark plugs and bla bla bla" and he'd look at it and be like, "nah, u just need this". never tried to screw me over or anything. family owned company since the 80's. he's seriously the best mechanic ever...he's just kinda pricey, but i realize now his prices are completely justified. he gets it done right and he REALLY knows his shit when it comes to cars.

and now that i think of it...BMW's and benzes are shitty too. the markup is ridiculous. cars are seriously the worst investments you could make. i'm starting to realize leasing might be better.

yea a friend of mine gave me a little tuneup a while back because he's really good with cars and loves working on them. so i went to his place and watched him change my spark plugs and replace my oil filter and all that. i actually like to get my hands dirty and mess around with cars too if i know what i'm doing. it's fun. anyway, that's when i realized how overengineered my car was. there were like 4 steps to go through just to get to my spark plugs. no wonder the labor costs are more when you take it in for work. it was so frustrating.

dealing with incompetent people like that, especially when they're responsible for working on my car, reeeeally pisses me off.

car repairs suck... that's why i drive a Honda.

Posted by DigitalMP on Apr-26-2006 14:15:

ask acquaintances and co-workers who they use for a mechanic. you should be able to someone who has a mechanic that dos really good work out of their garage (this is the key). these guys have no overhead, and aren't charging $60/hr, but rather $50-150 per job, plus parts.

I always have two or three, and these guys are so key, especially when you find one who is reliable. Back home I have one who did 9-5 work because he worked nights, and another two who worked nights and weekends.

Did he use lube?

Posted by klingklang77 on Apr-26-2006 14:42:

i have a VW turbo, too. i cant say i have major problems with the engine, transmission, or brakes etc. (knock on wood). Maybe b/c the mileage is low and i dont drive it that much. But i can say that i have had problems with minor things like electrical, the seals on the doors going, something with the window, the lever on the seats fell off to get into the back seat, etc things like that. i had another VW before that and same exact stuff. mine is a 2001 and the warranty sucked back then. 2 years- wtf is that?

but i still like the way it drives. but all the little things piss me off.

wtf?! what kind of car do you drive? i thought o2 sensors were one of those things that you don't really need to replace, haha... but i don't know shit about cars anymore so i'm probably totally wrong. it just seems like one of those things that you wouldn't need to replace unless you drove a super-expensive car or if they were really fucking something up.

last year, RIGHT after i got my tax returns, i had to spend the entire return on car repairs... i was so pissed.

o2 sensor's are a mechanic's greatest line, that means they are pulling a fast one over your head. You probably got a CEL (check engine light) on your dash and took it in to get it checked out. An o2 sensor usually resides near our Catalytic Converter, it measure the o2 coming out of your engine and then throws a light if there is an irregularity in o2 (rich or lean). Well to get o2, it's a combination of gas and air (Air/Fuel Ratio), alot of times there are small things that throw a CEL for o2, internal combustion when you step on it/floor it your car runs rich with gas and lean with air throwing a CEL. Most if not all the time an o2 sensor can throw a CEL for really stupid things, even a rock knocking the cat can throw a CEL for o2.

He might charge you for a replacement o2 sensor and really just reset your CEL, go under your car and clean the sensor casing a bit to make it seem like its brand new. So essentially he didn't replace anything, just reset your CEL so it doesn't appear and wait it out. If you come back within a given period of time with an o2 sensor issue or another CEL, he'll probably then go ahead and change it for you without any cost as if he's warranting on labor.

There are plenty of things that can affect an o2 sensor from throwing a CEL, under carriage knocking, internal combustion, bad gas, unclean air filter, just a bunch of things. Hope I educated you on what I know at least, and i'm pretty sure i didn't touch upon all the specifics here (someone else can do it) and i might not even be fully correct, just that my knowledge of cars stems back a few years since I haven't owned a vehicle in over 4 years (I moved into Manhattan and take the train every day =P).

Good luck =)

yea same here. mine is a 99. i mean it's cute and the body style is the newer kinda and it's got leather and a sweet sound system with a custom CD player w/ a remote, sunroof, all that stuff. but still, pain in the ass!

my ex had a brand new benz too 2004 sl500. OVERPRICED piece of crap. all the little gagets went wrong with that car too. what's the damn point??? and plus the service sucked at the dealership. you pay 110k for a car, there shouldn't be ANY problems...not on a brand new one like that. his buddy has a 2002 BMW 745 Li (one of my favorite cars on the road) but he had trouble with it a lot too.

screw german cars.

oh yea, and i just got a call from Pepboys...it's ready and it's going to be $180 as opposed to the $350 they were trying to charge me yesterday.

damn straight!

wow.

lol

i wish i could ride a train every day. actually, i just moved to miami and i live about 2 minutes from the miami location of my school (i plan on transferring there before fall) and it happens to be right next to the metrorail station which goes right into downtown miami.

so yea, i definitely want to go to that school and get a new job in downtown miami so i'd hardly ever need my car.

yea the metro rail is the thing above the ground. it's not like a subway system.

and you'd want to go from AC to AC if it was friggin 90 degrees with like 80% humidity

wow, thanks for writing all of that out... my CEL has been on in my car for about a year now, and i haven't gotten it fixed because the code that comes up when they checked it for me (420, haha) means the o2 sensors were setting it off. they told me it wasn't something that required fixing, just as long as i didn't care about having the CEL light always staring me in the face.

here's a more perplexing question though... ever since i got new tires put on my car last fall, my Parking Brake light has been stuck on ever since, even when the brake is disengaged.

so yah... i've got the CEL light and the parking brake light stuck on all the time but the car runs fine!

haha, that would suck, huh? for a while, the light would only stay on in cold temps... once it got near 60F it would go off. now it stays on all the time, but i didn't notice any difference in the way the car drives, which is why i haven't gotten it checked out.
