recording sets at home
I wanna record my sets into my pc. now my question is, do i need an audio interface to do that ? if not, can someone tell me how. thanks
hopefully you have a record output on your mixer so get hold of a rca>3.5mm cable or an rca cable with a rca>3.5mm convertor and whack that into your PC. Then find some kind of software to record (theres plenty around).
If your mixer doesnt have a seperare record output then only other method I can think of is recording off your amp via the rca outputs or if it doesnt have that either you can use the headphone jack...

I have the Numark dxm06 and it has a record output, but i cant really figure out where i can plug that rca cable to my Laptop

| Originally posted by sr126 your laptop probably has a 1/8" (3.5mm for the metric folks) headphone jack for a line in. pick up a Y-cable like the one fusic posted, but w/an 1/8" male plug at the end instead of the rca male plug that's in the pic. so you plug your current cable into the female jacks on this y cable, then plug the 1/8" into the line-in jack on your laptop. viola. |
let us know how it goes.
also, you may want to think about upgrading your soundcard down the line in future. lemme tell you, it'a night and day difference between the emu1212m i'm using, and the soundcard that is built into the mother board of my PC. the emu kills this card in sound quality, and has NONE of the hiss that the old one adds to my recordings. pure sexiness, best 150-160 i ever spent.
emu 1616 for $160 ? how did u get it for that price, i was looking forward in buying that in the future, it works well with laptops. last time i used an m-audio usb sound card with my laptop didnt really impress me .. but im thinkin of the emu 1616 now, where did u get it for that price tho, u got it used ?
but hey i have this rca cable

so i plug the red and white to the record output in the mixer, and plug the black one in my laptop to where usually headphones are plugged ? it does fit in there properly
Iv just baught a presonus firebox.
Its overkill for recording just mixing but obviously i have other uses.

Recording use the mic in will be pretty crap.
It can be done but eh.
Maybe something as simple as the Echo Indigo I/O Card will be good.
Also...
To turn down the volume go start menu>control panel>sounds and audio devices>advanced. This will bring up the windows mixer. Turn down mic input volume.

i thought about the 1820m, but it turns out that 1212m had everything i needed when i thought about it.

If you can go firewire.
Iv heard from people that usb runs into alot of problems, especially m-audio.
I current have a usb interface. Numark DXM01 mixer.
Shocking it is...
hey guys, i plugged that rca cable from my mixer to my laptop the same way u told me how and it worked, when i hit record everything was recorded, but holy, it sounds like there is a war happening when i play it from my laptop, it doesnt sound clean and pure as it is from my mixer speakers, why is that ?
oh wow, i just turned to a supreme tranceaddict after my last post
did you turn down the Mic-In volume?
The program you use to record should have volume meters, keep it below 0db. You may need to adjust the recording level as well (same as mentioned above except you choose recording in the windows volume control).
you need do one, two, or all three of theses things...
1) lower your sound card's mic in level via the control pannel.
2) lower the recording level in your recording application. -will probably end up being the same as step one.
3) lower the signal coming out of the mixer. -this is kind of tricky because, if your mixer has a dedicated record out... then it's probably controlled by the individual gains on each channel, and is not affected by the master.
ssssoooooooo... what can you do? connect the mixer to the computer via the master outs (use adapter plugs as you see fit to make the connnection) and then connect the record out to your amp/speaker set up. than way your can use the master out control on your mixer to adjust the amount of signal going into your computer. to help bring your levels under control. make sure you use your mixers UN-BALANCED outs to go to your laptop. using the balanced outs will just send a hotter signal to your laptop, making the problem even more difficult to bring under control.
also... are you 100% sure that the input you're using is actually a microphone input, and not a line-in?
before you start reconnecting, try lowering the line-in, record a part of song, and see what happens. hopefully it's that simple.
