tentative date is january as of now but symantect has filed a case against microsoft because they allegedly used their technology in vista without permission or something along those lines. As a result symantec wants vista to be delayed even further.

You guys are all caught up in your new age techno stuff...

I like it plain and simple, windows 98 is soooo much cooler.

And I'm not even talking about the special edition.

Far superior to anything produced after.

Posted by Engine9 on May-25-2006 17:10:

wow all they did is took windows XP, rearanged buttons, added more idiotic useless menus, and changed the colors

VOILA a new system taht everybody can pay money for.

well ok im sure they might have changed the core engine dynamics but these screens dont show anything exciting..

Well come on man, how in the hell do you make an operating system exciting?

Posted by Orko on May-25-2006 17:28:

I kown the system reqs for Vista are not out of this world, but it looks to me that to get all these visual and search features to work at peak performance, you will need one bad ass rig.

From reading reviews and press coverage, meta data seems to be big on MS's list of improved (important) features. Only one problem; meta data will have to be read from each file, and with today's media happy public that will be a very slow process. Here it comes down to the slowest part of the computer, the hard drive. If they want people to move towards a more search oriented OS experience(rather than file tree), hard drives are going to have to speed up, or you will need a tonne more RAM.

I just don't want Vista, I want a more secure XP. Kudos for MS trying to bring something new to us, but there is a reason Vista has been delayed so much, and will get a luke warm reception. It will be at least a couple of years before I switch to Vista, unless when it comes out, it is THAT much better.

I am very skeptical at this point.

I may be biased, but looks very OSX-esque to me.

My friend works for MSFT and he's sending me the betas of Windows and Office 2007 (I've seen them both already)...can't wait, should be fun!

Posted by Cosmic Fur on May-25-2006 18:25:

You don't have to work for Microsoft to get the betas of Office 2007 - MS has it on their site.

Looks like they ruined Notepad.

It's an additional app. I'm sure they'll keep the original.

Hopefully they meant to say "Windows Post It Notes" or something like that, rather than "Windows Notepad."

Thats ace....
and I agree with RJ... its tres swank.

Posted by Swamper on May-25-2006 20:59:

I'll happily turn off the majority of those graphical features for the 'classic' mode and pray for stability. I wonder if they'll finally remove directories that don't match your wildcard criteria from within File->Open dialogs - probably not. That's one long standing peeve.

To this day nothing beats Win2k for speed/task switching - I grudgingly moved to XP due to driver support and Win2k Update EOL - otherwise I would've stayed on it.

Agreed. This is the only reason I use XP right now as well. 3 years of using Windows 2000 and it didn't crash once.

I agree 100% here. I still run Win2k on my older box. Win2k will still run perfectly fine on most systems, and the driver development isn't delayed that much. I have not yet had problems updating it, theres no need to fix what ain't broken, eh. I just wish that XP would run half as good as Win2k, but if that was the case and they were not releasing a new O/S every 3-4 years then they wouldn't be making their $$.

Posted by chinamon on May-27-2006 05:03:

fuck xp. fuck vista. fuck 2k. fuck 98. fuck 95. fuck nt.
and the best one: fuck me.

im running 3.1 on this box and its blazing fast!

soo i finally sucked it up. installed .... Vista Beta 2 Build 5384

Good points, found all my hardware on my laptop, Rather impressive. I got a Dell Inspiron 9300
.... about all i noticed was good haha its user friendly but for someone like me where i get to learn all over again a new interface is kinda annoying...

speaking of which. its all bells and whistles i wanna just shoot myself.... I'm in Classic mode now just cause I hate the look of a desktop a 4 yr old mashed together...

Another note, after i installed the OS it crashed (not a bluid screen) it was a full crash. this was about 10mins haha. but it is BETA so i'm enjoying finding the bugs. I have until apparently June 1 2007 to play with this but i need to ship this HDD back to dell in 4days sooooooo I'll be back to my XP

PS i'm running 32 bit version, runs pretty fast. I could easily see myself using this instead of XP, i'll wait for some more program support

Laptop Stats...

nVidia Geforce 6800 GO 256 MEG
Intel M 2ghz
100 gig 5400 SATA
2gigs Ram
