Illegal to park on your own driveway?

This one's insane.

New Markham Law Makes It Illegal For Homeowners To Park On Own Driveways
Wednesday June 28, 2006
It's an idea only politicians could endorse - making it illegal to park in your own driveway.
But it's now the official rule in Markham, where leaving your car on part of your own property can result in you getting a ticket.

Local councillors passed the regulation Tuesday night, banning any expanded driveways in the city and issuing a warning to those whose parking space currently covers more than 75 percent of their front yard.

If they leave their cars on that extra width, they'll be issued tickets for the offence. And fines could range as high as $1,500.

Under the changes, the maximum allowed measurement of a driveway is the width of a garage door plus an additional two metres. Or it could be 6.1 metres, but only if at least 40 percent of their yard is devoted to green space.

And they'll also be tagged if they park on the street overnight without a permit - a license that costs at least $70 a month.

The plan is designed to prevent Markham from turning into a paved over concrete jungle. It's estimated there are at least 17,000 expanded driveways in the area, where parking is tight. But when council refused to exempt those who already had their space expanded, it raised a furor among voters.

CityNews first told you about the plan last April. And residents weren't happy about it. "It's absolutely insane, asinine," fumed Peter Sommer, one of those affected. "Nobody can understand the logic of what these people are trying to do."

"What was the big problem?" railed one homeowner as he addressed town councillors in a meeting, desperately trying to get them to reconsider. "Somebody sitting at home was complaining that somebody else's driveway was bothering them? Why can't they mind their own business?"

But from now on, they'll be minding other people's business. And it could cost them all.

Officials insist they'll issue warnings at first, before seriously enforcing the law in 2008.

Holy crap. A new low.

And the justification for that is the prevention of a concrete jungle in Markham? Gaaaaaayy. The only people who would spend th emoney to extend their driveway are the ones who need the extra space because of extra cars. This is nothing more than a blatant fucking tax on the people who own multiple vehicles.

Actually, I think this is a good idea. Living in Milton, I see a lot of people who have taken the small front yard they have and have paved over it so they don't have to bother mowing it.

When you pave over all this land you are creating huge problems. The amount of water run off is just one problem...since the water can't be absorbed into the ground it is entering the sewer system and the system cannot handle all this water and it is causing sewer back ups in houses....the costs to insurance companies and health concerns for the people living in the houses are huge. Not to mention all the run off pollution that is making its way to the lakes.

No shit. When is this madness going to stop? People have too much freaking free time that they worry about complete bullshit such as this. And what kind of clowns do these towns have in the town councilling meetings that sit around and dont' have anything better to do than to spat out nonsense laws like this. Frustratating..

Posted by joinT on Jun-28-2006 20:27:

let's go pour asphalt all over the councillors lawns..

I think its more about this....

They are being fined because they are violating an existing law about driveways.
The headline is purposely sensationalist.

I echo what ChemEnhanced said...not only that, but in a residential neighborhood like markham, paving one's driveway and parking cars across it can be a total eyesore and decrease property values of neighboring homes..

*paging JayX1's plane ticket out of here*

ridiculous nonetheless

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Jun-28-2006 20:33:

Personally, I think the people who have increased their driveways without proper authorization from the city should pay a fine and the driveway should be torn up.

Yah existing law ...since Tuesday!

This nothing more than another excuse to introduce useless laws because someone doesnt have something better to do and wants a fast cash grab.

so many narrow minded people.....not every law passed is to get your money.

But Scott, my bad influence, they arent making it illegal to pave over your lawn. They are making it illegal to park on that paved lawn.

Posted by Time2Burn on Jun-28-2006 20:38:

So what some of you are saying is: "Its ok for a homeowner who wants to pave their lawn so they can fit more cars onto their property so they can avoid getting a street parking permit and in the end take away street parking spots"

This is not a regulated driveway. And people who do chose to do this should be fined!

I agree with Skipper this article was purposely written to be sensasional.

Cracking down on official plan violations? Not done for the cash? What's next, J-walking .... for protection of pedestrians, of course.

Well yeah, that's citynews for ya.

But do you think it would be better to leave the "driveway expansion" as grass and just park in the mud?

most of the people have paved over their lawn to make room for more vehicles.

Just do what I do....park on the lawn....fuck it....I've also put a shitter on the front lawn with a plant in it.

What i find narrow minded is people who take it up the ass from the government in the name of the "greater good". You just said it yourself, "not every law", meaning that you admit some laws are passed to grab my money. Well guess what, this one is one of them and so was that one about needing a license to have an inflatable pool. I'm sorry but I don't buy this shit. The city should spend their time and my money in better things than to worry about what I do with my front lawn.

Ahh. So cars parked all over front lawn = not an eyesore. Cars parked all over front driveway = eyesore.

Posted by joinT on Jun-28-2006 20:49:

so what exactly is the purpose of this law?

when my parents bought a 3rd car - they increased the size of our driveway so we could park all of our cars on our property.
(note, there is no "street parking permits" on our street - parking on the street overnight is illegal)

so, say a family buys an extra vehicle.. they then could have paved part of their lawn to park it, but that would allow them to avoid buying a street permit??

so? is it a cash grab or not?? Sure seems that way to me.. You aren't allowed to pave your yard so if you have an extra vehicle, you _HAVE_ to buy a street parking permit..

+1

It's my property, I should be able to do whatever the fuck I want on it.

Oh but that will change once we are not allowed to have more than two cars (the exact number will depend on the size of your property), unless ofcourse you buy extra "vehicle space" permit for your own property. Welcome to communist Canada, the great wall of Canada to be completed in the year 2020.

Yeah not well explained I agree.

OK Scenario:

Family X has 1 car but no driveway on their property. They are forced to park on the street where they would have to pay for a monthly parking permit. One day they decide that they are going to convert their small front lawn into a "driveway" so they no longer have to worry about street parking/tickets/permits. So they get all the interlocking brick done and even buy some tar so they can create an incline at the curb for their car toi roll up on. Then one day I drive up and park infornt of this make shift driveway and they freak out cause I'm blocking them in. I say "FUCK YOU" cause one can't just decide to make a driveway entrance at a whim without zoning approval.

It's funny cause it's true. Pretty soon we'll need special permits to take a dump, and a seperate permit to take a piss. If we don't then our Big Brother neighbours, who have nothing better to do than indulge in OUR own personal lives, will call the police on us and you will get fined for taking an illegal shit.

What the hell? I thought it was stupid that you can't park on the street in Cambridge over night IN THE SUMMER due to SNOW plows...but this? This is just ridiculus. It's your own fucking property!!
