Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Ecstasy and Alcohol

Well, apparently Tool are considered stoner rock... though more on a metal tip I guess.

I'm always getting told I HAVE to listen to Tool stoned in order to comprehend the true intricacies of their music. Um... right... If I can't get such dudes to buy into that theory whenever I throw on some ambient dub, why the hell do they think I'll fall for it as well.

Is this a genre or a group of artists associated with pot heads?

Stoner rock and stoner metal are interchangeable terms describing sub-genres of rock and metal music. Stoner rock often fuses slow-to-mid tempo, bassy guitar riffs, psychedelic jams, melodic, often slightly raspy vocals and stripped down 'raw' production.

umphreys mcgee, string cheese, tea leaf green, widespread panic, disco biscuits, all the former members of phish's projects, and a lot more seem to be doing alright. but thats just a small slice of them AND mainly jamrock. but fuck, i'll get high to any music.

Pearl Jam would be an example of both grunge rock and post-grunge alternative rock. They have been around for both, and have played both styles.

I have never heard the term 'stoner rock' before, but would not use it to define any of the grunge era bands. 'Stoner Rock' should be used to label bands like N.E.R.D , which clearly cannot be anything else.

Phish I would simply call a Jam Band.

why does everybody always mention that one the most!?

I love "The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret". I didnt know that QOTSA were "stoner rock".

What type of sounds define this genre?

My picks would probably be Phish, Pearl Jam, the first Foo Fighters album (nothing else), the Dead (though quite literally "dead" now), moe., "Californication" by the Chili Peppers, anything by Blind Melon, Medeski, Martin, & Wood, Cake, 311, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Bad Plus, Disco Bisuits, Lotus, the New Deal, Incubus' "Morning View" and "Make Yourself," Vida Blue, Mike Gordon, Charlie Hunter, John Scofield, String Cheese Incident, Keller Williams, Galactic, Particle, Sound Tribe Sector 9...

...I could go on for quite a while, but then again, those are all just bands/artists I happen to listen to a lot of when I'm ripped, not necessarily "stoner" band...

The two bands in bold should be checked out by any Trance/EDM fan... absolutely phenomenal...

Would "The Flaming Lips" be considered Stoner-Rock? Know they are sometimes labeled "Neo-Psychadelic Rock", a bit on the trippy/druggy side.

err the ones I recognise wouldnt be labeled as stoner rock but im sure theyre great to listen to while stoned.

but then again what isnt?

Posted by guster on Jul-20-2006 13:35:

Well..

Frank Zappa is the ultimate high "rock" music in my opinion.

Other bands that seem stoner-ish to me..

The Shins
Morcheeba
M83 (more electronic that rock but.. yeah)
Widespread Panic
Oysterhead!!
Pavement
Radiohead
Rogue Wave

There ya go.
