Reason 3 Beginner
i know this might be the 87629.2 time someone is asking something about reason 3 bla bla.... i just got a new midi keyboard and want to start using reason 3. the problem is.... where do i start? im a total n00b with reason... are there any online tutorials that are simple as fuck to help out a poor fella? thanks guys!
Bidor
Well, check the manual or the tutorial video that comes along, you will find all the important info there!
If you didnt get it when you bought it, i would recomend you to go back to your retailer and change to new one.
If you by any chance have a pirate version, i think you will be on your own.
Cheers
i didnt use tutorials when using reason. its better to learn from scratch and pick up things from the forum.
the need to no is:
redrum - kick and percs
subtractor and malstrom - bass, synths, pads
m class mastering suite - very good for tightening up your kick, bass and percs
the rest i havent played with as i use cubase, i just use reason for kicks and percs but play about with them and add your effects in the create menu.
check the book:
reason 3 overdrive: by trance master bodhisattva 13:20
is written for the trance producer in mind and has alll kinda tips from beginers to advanced!!! there shure is a pdf copy around!!!
i really really recommend this book. i didint think much of reason before i read this one. u can really do amazing things with these lessons...
if u are interested PM me , i can give u a copy. yeah im such a nice fella. its just that this thing rules!!
go to computer music's website, they have lots of tutorials about reason, google it.
Ok, so you'd want to use the combinator to layer several synths together. The subtractor and malstrom while nice, they can't really create very fat trance sounds on their own. They need to be layered. (To simulate unison and supersaw waveforms)
Check the manual it's explained pretty well in there on how to use the combinator.
Even though you're only using one synth, the combinator is excellent for combining effects and synths in one patch.
thanks for the advice so far guys! my version of reason 3 isnt really legal
so i dont have a manual. also i know a little bit now how to make sounds with the keyboard but dont know yet where to find my 16 layers where i can layer the sounds.. damn this program is hard but it guess once you get used to it its easy.. some link to good tutorials for uber n00bs like myself are very welcome. pls help this n00b.
thanks,
Bidor

ohh look, I wonder what that button does...
I have that Reason 3 Overdrive, but i would recommend u read the manual that comes with the program. You will be confused if you just read Overdrive without knowing shit about the program. I also wouldnt recommend Reason, the sound quality is crap. Learn Reason and all the terminology then go with Cubase SX3 or Ableton Live.

LOL, you can compare it yourself... before Reason 2.5 you couldnt even master a song in Reason. But it looks like your one of those reason-freaks that say you can create ANY sound with Malstrom and Subtractor..
reasonfreak, perhaps.
But what does mastering and me being a reasonfreak has to do with the reasonengines soundquality?
I do my mastering pure outside reason and I use both reason, cubase and live back and forth (I don't like being locked into one program)
You still haven't showed one single example of where reasons soundengine sounds worse than cubases engine.
Unless you come up with some kind of technical proof and not just speculations based on a whole scenes love to bash a program I'm gonna trust the developers more than the scene.
The expresseion "it's not what you use, it's how you use it" has never been more true than with reason.
ok. i must say i like reason, and use it sometimes of course always rewired to cubase sx, so being able to use vst. i use mainly dr rex, subtractor and maelstrom. but i must say that some vst sound better than subtractor, for example discodsp discovery. i use almost the same settings as possible, and the sound of the vst is better, i can hear the difference. i use subtractor, but i am in the process of using it less and more top vst like discovery, z3ta. it has a fatter , more real feel to it. generally i think it sounds more professional. im not saying it from specs or features, but what i can listen to.
cheers
*starts sobbing*
When will the Reason is crap fight endddddddddddddddddddd.
*seriously, I'm really sobbing*
Quit being ig'nant and learn from some of the wise Jedi in here that have more experience than you.
Stupid Reason arguments. Gah. BAH. RARAWHWHWHWH.
Anyway, back to class.

subtractor == a synth in reason
reasons sound engine is not it's synths in particular. It's the core engine that handles all the sounds that is input into it basicly. The synths is just a way to create those sounds.
