Self-Esteem Nukes

When something happens or is said to someone that nukes their self-esteem. Here is a classic I overheard once

Guy: Ya i'm working part-time as a waiter
Girl: I thought waiters were supposed to be attractive?
(said without an ounce of malice, just matter of fact)

Posted by StanVoid on Jul-20-2006 13:28:

Guy: I love you.
Girl: I know ... I heard you the first time.

^ heh Ive pulled that one before. it was more of a friendly "I love you" to which I replied "I know".

anyway nothing that really bothered be since it was all in good fun but its the closest thing I think of:

girl: youre fat
(I actually wasnt)
me: so are you.
(she wasnt)
girl: I know eh!

Rather than having an absolute formula (i.e. a given sentence that would nuke anyone's self-esteem), people are usually proud/insecure of different things. Here's something that devastated a friend of mine:

His girlfriend: I want to have a baby
Him: We can't, we need a job in order to raise a kid, and I want to finish my studies first (neither of them had a job, both of them were graduate students)
His girlfriend: You know, I wish I were with an older man, who could take care of me and my needs.
Him: ...?!

He had always felt he wasn't good enough to do things, so this was a slap on the face for him (whereas in my case, I'd be just "tough luck, go find a job instead of leeching others"). The most cruel part is that the bitchful slag actually cheated on him with an older guy... I don't think he knows though.

Naturally, in my case, there are other things that would've hurt me.

why do ugly ppl act shocked and offended when someone tells them that they're ugly? its not like its a secret you have to let us in on, we have eyes you know.

Life's a bitch sometimes.

Mainly because it's a subjective judgement - there's no absolute ugliness.

I dunno, one of my epiphany moments was when I was at a friend's house and their niece was there playing with dolls. I think she was 7-10 years old, and her face glowed with happiness.

But she was hideous. Not unnattractive. Not an ugly duckling who was going to turn into a swan. She was hideous. And all I could think about was puberty was just around the corner and it was going to hit her like a truck and that there was nothing I could do to protect her.

thats a common misconception. for the most part beauty isn't subjective. There are universally accepted characteristics of beauty. One should roughly know where one falls in the scale of beauty. For example, I would rate myself a 5 (average). I'm nothing to look at but I'm not ugly. I have good skin and teeth, i'm not over weight, good proportions, and well cut features. I could use more muscle tone and my face could be more symmetrical. Whether your personality can overcome your physical short comings is another story. We size up the opposite sex in the the first few seconds we meet, to deny that wouldn't be honest.

+1

Actually I think ugly people support each other and keep saying other ugly people : 'You are very hot and good looking.'

Thats when a normal looking person tell them 'You are ugly' they are shocked.
