Linux or XP????

Ok i have had enough of *** windows. Nothing but problems and viruses. 'send report' is all i get. So annoying.

Should i switch to Linux?

Problem is i have no idea if all my software will work on Linux?

Is Linux more stable than Windows XP?

Is Linux prone to Viruses like XP?

Ive been looking around and noticed i can have both systems on my computer, but i want to download the 64bit version of lYnux:

http://www.mandriva.com/en/download

Will 64bit and XP 32bit run ok together? or should i stick to just the one OS?

Someone said Suse Linux or Redhat are also good, so which is better?

I came a cross this: http://store.mandriva.com/product_i...products_id=288{14}59&osCsid=97e080e257d48d87a539b2f2992c6bf2
Is this the full OS? would this be ideal?

WinXP isn't vulnerable if you use it right. First NEVER connect to the internet without SP2 or your fucked. Get a legit key or download WGA crack, install all updates. Turn on automatic updates. Turn on windows firewall, also use some other firewall, norton or symantec. Best is to use hardware firewall (Router, Switch). Step three turn IE security level all the way up if your that stupid to click yes and accept all the shit you do. It will not even ask you anymore since you obviously don't know when your downloading/installing adware and spyware. Download Windows Media Player 11, your probably still using 9 or whatever came with your computer, and all the pr0n videos you got off limewire, bearshare, kazaa, emule, morpheus, all download viruses into your computer. People come up with all kinds of crazy exploits with these programs. Not safe. Keep an anti-virus running.

I'm always on IRC with Linux users and there always compiling shit or trying to make shit work. Simple stuff that should always work. I stick with XP because I don't see any reason to switch. There's also like 200 versions of linux, did you know which one your gonna get? Is that mandrake you listed? I've heard of that I think it's the one that looks like windows. Anyway you don't BUY Linux LOL that's the whole point it's a free OS. Get it off BitTorrent. Get the ISO off bit-torrent and burn with your favorite CD-Burning program that won't work on Linux. Then pop it in your drive, restart your computer, and pray you can figure out how to install it.

Cheers, i installed all updates etc, have the best possible virus protection, but still PROBLEMS. I used a Mac for yrs and loved it, not one problem at all. Madriva was the one i listed, it was meant to be easy to use for new users. Aparently it is meant to be more stable than windows. Plus if you read it i think it supports most Microsoft compnents. Madriva is not free though, due to the huge files and ammount of stuff you get.

I would rather spend 50-pounds on a Linux system that works wonders than get a crapy copy of windows. I juts want to know if anyone has Linux and uses Cubase on it problem?

I wa sthinking of doing this:

Buy a new G4 mother board, install it into my G3 Mac and use that for Music ONLY?

Use my PC for everything else and install Lynux?

Posted by mysticalninja on Aug-08-2006 16:40:

What's the best possible virus protection? Tell me. I thought it was using common sense, but what are you using?

Maybe you got fucked before you installed all updates and the best virus protection. Then it won't help you. Computers can get so fucked over no virus scan/eliminator can help you. The only way is to go in the registry and delete everything in safe mode, or use a program like Hi-Jack This. Even then, a computer can get so fucked that won't even get rid of it, and you have to format. or just re-install windows. (Hasn't happend to mine in 3 years at least. Early days of xp.)

Mcafee - new edition, spysweeper, cwshredder and more

Posted by Zombie0915 on Aug-08-2006 16:50:

If you jump to linux you wont be using the same apps. There are alot of great noise softwares for linux machines and alot of extra issues you will run into, that could possibly make you waste alot of time solving. It is relly fun, and you learn alot of stuff in the hours you need to spend tweaking the thing to get it working, and you dont pay as much, but time is money too.

Generally I dont think linux is an approriate alternative for regular people who are just frustrated with windows, linux can be very frustrating and if windows pisses you off you might not have enough patience to deal with linux issues either.

Cubase might work in emulation but youd have to do alot of shit to make it run, it would be easier using a native linux app like ardour, but then you have to learn a new set of programs. Fedora or Debian based distros have been the nicest ones I've dealt with so far for audio, you can make the others work too but it is fastest setting it all up for fedora or debain based.

If you do it, look up omsynth, ardour, seq24, jack, and hydrogen. Those are my favoite programs, ardour is a multitrack recorder, guess it would be your cubase substitute, omsynth is a modular synth like reaktor, seq24 is a dedicated midi sequencer since ardour is audio only you end up using this for your midi parts, jack is like rewire and it probably the greatest thing going for linux audio right now, hydrogen is a drum sampler/

Mcafee isn't great. Especially it's virus scan. Besides having newest edition make sure you update it. CWShredder won't help unless you have CoolWeb. Sounds like your fucked massivly, you need to run Ad-Aware and SpyBot - Search & Destroy updated and with any plugins that might help. SpySweeper looks ok. Again make sure it's updated. If you haven't run Ad-Aware / Spybot yet do so now. You'll be sure to find tons of new things installed on your computer.

Posted by dj alliance on Aug-08-2006 16:54:

I have this solution, buy a new G5mac in October and sell my PC. ??? Macs are solid and aparently the core system cannot be attacked by Viruses plus i can still use MSN and Word.

Posted by Synchronicity on Aug-08-2006 18:04:

xp + norton internet security + adaware + spybot + registry fix + very very very careful downloading = no problems. Never needed McAfee and never will. I'm guessing Mcafee is shit or you aren't downloading carefully enough. Most likely both.

Close all unnecessary progs (norton, internet etc) when producing, defrag regularly, uninstall shit you don't need.

Search your comp with no phrase/word to list all your files, then sort by size and delete big unnecessary files. I edit video so this might not be useful for you.

If youre gonna p2p, LimeWire + Shareaza + very very very careful downloading. Norton will take care of the odd fuck-up.

Get to know running processes in your task manager and if suspect ones appear google for them and check more than one sites opinion.

Give these programs I've mentioned a try for a month and I guarantee your comp will run a lot smoother.

Cheers mate,

I wa sgona do this, Use my PC for production only and buy a mac and use that for everything else?

Posted by mysticalninja on Aug-08-2006 18:22:

Yahr McAfee be shit. I second that too.. Search your HD for all files over 50 megs.. You'll be amazed how much shit you find.

lol i'm running a boot legged xp, sp1, no virus protection, no firewalls(well sometimes i have zonealarm on, but i usually turn it off), never update windows, and i have no problems at all. my computer runs fine, been running fine for 4+ years. but i probably just jinxed myself.

Posted by mysticalninja on Aug-08-2006 18:45:

pwnt. but zone alarm sucks hard. but seriously at least you have sp1, non sp winxp + internets = fucked.

Posted by dj alliance on Aug-08-2006 19:06:

Is XP home edition les sprone to virsues than Proffessional?

Posted by Synchronicity on Aug-08-2006 21:49:

Nah they're the same.

I couldn't comment on macs because I've never used them enough. They both have pros and cons, the PC's pros seem to suit me more.

Honestly, give mine + the mystical one's recommendations a go - even for a week and you'll see a difference. Then you could use the cash you were gonna spend on the mac to get nice instruments + fx.

You've got X amount of cash, be tight as possible with it.

This always has been good enough for me. Haven't had any need for an antivirus software in the past 2 years

I love macs as they are solid though. I have had so many problems with this PC and MACs last for yrs. Plus i can get a cheap G5 since the new ones have come out. I wa splanning on Using my PC for music production only and then buying a new XP - update one, then buy a new mac G5 and use that for everything else, playing music, word documents, internet etc..

I'm with this guy. No problems with XP here.

Posted by david.michael on Aug-09-2006 18:29:

If you are incapable of keeping your Windows XP PC from being exploited and destroyed, you are going to be incapable of doing ANYTHING in Linux. Just my honest two cents.

Posted by Zild on Aug-09-2006 18:37:

True security in Linux is more robust but you have to know how to use it and it isn't as simple as clicking 'yes' on a firewall and doing spysweep every now and again.

Agreed. You won't even get it installed.

use windows 2000, its 500% more secuer than XP without an SP's....plus, it uses about 40% less memory to run

i have no spy/ad/virus cheakers, never have, never will....i have also never had a virus [ok, i do check my computer once a year, but w/e :P]

The ONLY way a user gets soemthign on their computer, is if they put it there, knowingly or unknowingly, simple fact...know what your downloading, know what your installing, read the EULA, and you will be fine

that's my 2 cents, you will nto believe how many people are duped into doing all kinds of unessicary shit to keep a virus out...and still get a virus.

I promise, when you get all that secruity crap on your computer, you will find the RAM usage is mroe than half of your total RAM, i been installing/fixing windows systems for a long time, and that is almost always the cause for computers running terribly slow

"my computers running slow!!! do i have a virus??"..."no maam, its the 5 thousand dollars worth of antispy/ad/virus programs you ahve running all at the same time scanning every byte that enters and leaves your computer 24/7"..no to mention all the crap windows XP loads up when you start the operating system.

As for linux, SURE, get linux, i love it...i can't use it, nor can you...if you plan to make music that is [or play any games that don't use openGL]..name one good program that runs on linux with VSTi support..

not to mention its illegal to use .mp3 on linux [believe it or not, you need a license to use .mp3, windows comes with this.]

then again, most people useing linux, i find don't care much for those little copyright law BS hehe :P

[/end rant]

I agree Win 2k Pro is better than XP. It uses far less resources, and has far less bollocks with it. I use 2k on my P3 laptop (laptop is dual booted with 2k and Suse) and its great, feels fast, responsive and clean. My PC running XP error's FAR more than my laptop.

About needing a licence to run mp3's on linux, thats not totally correct. Because everything with linux is free, they cannot include in the distributions programs that play DVD movies or play .mp3's, you have to add them afterwards yourself - but if you use say Suse, adding a 3rd party audio program is easy with YaST.

Posted by cronodevir on Aug-10-2006 23:24:

es, that's it, linux operating systems don't *come* with mp3 support, you have to add it, but i also remember something about useing the codecs for mp3 on linux as being illegal, iirc
