[Review] Gabriel & Dresden and Jason Jollins (please?)

I'm too tired and too silly to actually post a real review. Those boys played all the goodies I expected, but then went somewhere else. Am I crazy?

Posted by DJ A.K on Sep-16-2006 11:26:

Ok, so just got back, chillin' w/ Tom @ my place at the moment. I'm not sure what zachias means, but I thought the night was amazing!

First of all, I showed up early and chilled with Jason for a bit and listened to his opening set. I thought he killed it with a perfectly designed set. Started off with some very interesting sounds, playing tracks that got people onto the dance floor. Then he transitioned into playing some harder tracks that would get them moving, and finally dropped the bass to turn a casual crowd into a raving mass of clubbers. Some fantastic tunes dropped toward the end, and it was, in my opinion, a very good opening set.

G&D came on a bit early (I'd like to have heard a bit more of Jollins' set) and started off dropping some amazing tracks early on. I had a rather lengthy conversation with Dave Dresden while they were setting up, during which I mentioned that 'Without You Near' was my favorite prodoction that G&D (w/ Markus Schulz) had come out with. I know people say it's overplayed, but I absolutely love that track. So the two of them drop a killer set, including some new version of Motorcycle's 'As the Rush Comes'. Their set was absolutely fantastic, though the end was really what sold it to me. They cranked so many amazing trance tracks toward the end that I was absolutely mesmorized by the music. And, of course, the encore happened to be 'Without You Near'. Honestly, though I've heard better overall sets, this might have been the best ending of a set that I've ever heard. The last hour (including a track that they played at precisely 5:35 that I had never heard before... sort of possessing the sound of a steel drum mixed with a Greek guitar) was exemplary of how any set should properly end. Finally, G&D are just chill guys who are fun to talk to and who are humble enough to really shine among other superstar DJs.

And as for the crowd? Well, I spent a lot of my time upstairs, so my verdict on the crowd isn't 100% accurate. I thought they were alright --- didn't see any major problems, other than what seemed like a ketamine overdose and a fight on the stairs (that later was re-fought outside the club on the street... two really juiced up guys swinging at eachother).

Final Verdict: A great party overall, proven so by the quality of the music. Track selection, mixing, and improvisation (Dresden was actually scratching and messing with a few of his tracks in an almost Carl Cox-like fashion) was great, something that leads me to give this party an overall thumbs up!

Sorry, I was a blithering idiot. What I meant is pretty much what you said, they played a bunch of trancey good stuff, especially at the end, much of which I don't normally hear from them. Def my favorite G&D show.

Venue: People were nice, but lawdy was is crowded.

They played that blend of Zocalo and Do What you Want... that's when it was it all got blurry...haha... Jason played a dope set to really warm up the crowd... G&D never disapoints...Favorite dynamic duo...here's a random comment... they chainsmoke like a mofo

My second time at Pacha and what a difference.

I love dJasons Set, it was my frist time hearing him. It was my first time seeing G&D and they were amazing. It was a very, very good night. There was alot of people though, but a fairly good crowd. Due to some drama that happens every time(long story) we left around 330 am. I stayed for 1 more song which was Beatiful things...my god, the whole crowd was signing the song. That moment was just amazing.

Overall great night and great party.

Thank you.

Another Brick in the Wall, The One I love, and Beautiful Things pretty much made the night for me. I left around 4am, right after Zocalo. Good crowd, particularly right in the middle of the floor which is where I spent most of the night. Great set -- not my favorite set from these guys but right up there. Thankfully it stopped raining so we could walk a bit after leaving the club and savor the good time that had just been had.

Can't wait for AVB!

the highlight of the night for me was when G&D dropped my ALL TIME FAVE EMO track; Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars. I don't know what mix it is; but obviously it was a EDM mix - does anyone know which version it was??

Posted by djparanoia on Sep-16-2006 17:14:

is the another brick in the wall remix called:

Prydz vs. Floyd - Proper Education?

also, the REM remix is Blake Jarrell Remix?

Are either of those released?

BLAHH!! what became a dilema early in the night later turned out to be an awesome night- i was pretty pissed tho because i really wanted to see Jason open up. i was really anxious about his set but like a said a slight dilema. right when we get on the block of Pacha, my boy decides to throw up n kill the night by repeatly saying "take me home." dont know how pissed i was cause i live in queens. so we took him home but my other friend n I had GnD fever so at 1am as soon as we dropped by drunken boy off, we headed out back out to the city. actually we did heads of tails (best out of 3) if i won= we go back to Pacha, if he wins= we go home n sleep like babies! mad funny, i won the first toss, then he wins the second to make it a tie..so for the tie-breaker i had to call it!! the coin's in the air, i call heads n bam........lands on tails! that meant we go home BUT mad funny because the whole toss thing was pointless cause we just looked at each other, got in the car, put our seatbelts on with smiles from ear to ear cause we both knew the only reason we did the coin toss was for a reason to have to go back to the city! GnD FEVERRR!

so whatevers, didnt get to see Jason rock it out but GnD def made it up for me as soon as i stepped on the dancefloor by putting out "till there was you." the set went dull after that for a bit but towards the end they started picking things up n dropping some nice tunes. track of the night def had to be "beautiful things" only cause it had the whole club singing along n literally everybody was jamming to it. def a classic. ended up closing out. got home at 7, left for work at 8:30- yep broke night- ima trooper.

btw im here right now at work writing my review n getting kicked out cause its the end of day woohoOoo so peaceee

PS: People will almost certainly be hearing Proper Education at Armin, we has been dropping that track like mad Great tune...

Posted by chimchim on Sep-17-2006 03:05:

unfortunately i did not arrive at the club until 2am..so i missed alot of the night...but g&d sure did an amazing job...it was my first time there and i really liked it... was defenitely really crowded but oh well i still found my lil corners to dance in....it was a fun night all in all

Like i said it before, awesoem fucking night.

I left right after Andain-Beaitufil Things, it really made my niteeee.
I hate when people create drama.

Definitely a great night.

What did they open with. It was a remix of Ame - Rej wasn't it? Was it the DJ Todd Something vocal remix?

I'd say its the best set of 06 in NY, but I didn't hit up some of the major trance DJ's in NY this year (but caught them elsewhere).

Next up for me, Sharam @ Crobar.

Duncan Shiek's on a high was THE high for me.

yeahhhh we all agreed it was ours too haha

and as for opening track, it sounded like AME :: "rej" (original) layed over some vocals using Abelton maybe?

Posted by djparanoia on Sep-17-2006 15:22:

does anyone remember that song they played that kept going "i love everything" over and over again? it had some weird spoken word in it too but that was the main chorus.

anyone know what that was?
