Hockey Nonsense

Don't get me wrong I'm happy that the hockey season is back, but there is definately something that comes along with it that I could deal without.

I just watched an interview between Michael Landsberg and Jason Spezza and Danny Heatley. It was bloody ridiculous. I just hate how canadian sports broadcasters blather on and on about the most pointless shit if it even remotely relates to hockey.

Bob Mackenzie is one of the worst!

Welcome back hockey, but take it easy on the analysis of what colour laces the leafs are wearing.

How about the nonsense of the amount of hockey movies that Canada makes every year (CBC specifically)...god there must be 20 at least for the 70's Canada - Russia series alone, and they'll make 20 more...now they have hockey - the people's history...

It's like there's nothing else to Canada but...

But I do like hockey

The CEO of RIM bought the Penguins today.

Research In Motion's Balsillie Agrees to Buy NHL's Penguins

By Larry DiTore

Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Research In Motion Ltd. Co-Chief Executive Officer James Balsillie agreed to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins from hockey great Mario Lemieux and plans to keep the team in Pittsburgh.

Balsillie, 45, needs approval from the National Hockey League's Board of Governors for the sale to be final.

``Pittsburgh has shown itself to be an outstanding hockey market, and the team has an incredible tradition of success and fan support,'' Balsillie said in a statement today. ``I look forward to owning this team for a long time in Pittsburgh.''

Financial terms of the sale weren't disclosed. Balsillie made an earlier offer of as much as $180 million, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The team was put up for sale in January by Lemieux, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, who bought it while it was under U.S. bankruptcy court protection in 1999.

``Jim is a tremendous businessman and a passionate hockey fan, and I think he is going to be a great owner for the Pittsburgh Penguins,'' Lemieux said in a statement. ``I know his hope is to get a new arena deal and keep the team here in Pittsburgh for the long-term.''

The Penguins had the worst record in the Eastern Conference and second-worst in the NHL at 22-46-15 last season, despite a roster that included top rookie Sidney Crosby.

Research In Motion, based in Waterloo, Ontario, makes the BlackBerry mobile e-mail device.

Everywhere else in the world it's the same way, just about soccer. Only in US it's about Hollywood stars exclusively.

Hamilton has been hoping and hoping for a team but it just won't happen. Toronto and Buffalo won't let it happen as it cuts into their fan base too much.

Toronto and Buffalo only have two votes. When the league votes on these sorts of things each owner gets a vote.

Million bucks says Jim Balsillie moves the team in a few years.

Yea because the Toronto base couldn't use some breathing space...

You have to hope someone dies and you get season ticket bequithed to you in a will...

so true... where the fuck do they all go!!

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Oct-05-2006 21:26:

Toronto is more likely to get a NFL Team then Hamilton getting a NHL team.

If Hamilton actually got a team it would be a disaster....it would loose more money then Florida, Carolina, and Tampa Bay Combined.

They would get shitty TV Contracts, a new arena would have to be built (Copps just won't cut it anymore) and there just isn't enough fan base there.

its not ticket sales that concern Toronto....but all the merchandising. The league will not allow it to happen......its been discussed before and it just won't happen.....give up the hope because it will not happen.....there will not be another team in Ontario. The only possible places for teams in canada would be Moncton (huge huge huge long shot simply because there isn't enough people), Quebec City (unlikely it will happen but they have proven before that it can work) and Winnipeg (this being the best shot for a team).

Guy, you have no idea what you're talking about. Hamilton's fan base is the same as Toronto's.

A new arena is going to have to be built in Pittsburg anyhow.

I dunno about the TV contract, but with the BellGlobeMedia deal a few months ago a lot could change.

Either way, RIM has the money to spend. They may (= will if/when the build a new arena) lose money in the first few years, but the investment will pay off.

hmmmm.....Greater Toronto Area has somewhere around 6 million people
Hamilton and Niagara somewhere around 3 million people (just a little bit smaller)

I'm pretty sure there would be a lot of Toronto or Buffalo fans in that area and I am sure some would convert to Hamilton Fans and I am sure you would get people into an arena because they would want to see other teams play but that is only small peanuts for revenue.

Pittsburg needs a new arena as well....if there is no plans to build a new arena there in the next year or so then you can guarantee the team will be moving even though they say the plan is to stay there.

There will not be a team in Hamilton though so I don't know why people keep thinking this. The whole reason Copps was built was to try and get an NHL Team....did it work...nope....go bulldogs go

GTA is like a half hour from Hamilton, its the same market!! You think everyone that watches the Islanders lives on Long Island?

There will be another team in Southern Ontario within three years. If not Hamilton, London, but I think Hamilton is more likely b/c of the Toronto market proximity.

Pittsburg needing a new arena was my whole point. Copps is not good enough, and Hamilton will require a new arena as well. Copps was built before the Competition Act, so there are new arguments there.
