it burns!

DOZENS of homes are under threat from a bushfire burning out of control in bushland near Hobart.

Tasmania Fire Service senior station officer Danny Reid has said the fire started about 12.40pm (AEST) at the top of a disused quarry in Mount Nelson, just 2km south of the city centre.

Mr Reid has said hot, dry winds were pushing the fire rapidly downhill through bushland at Proctors Road and a University of Tasmania reserve.

He has said houses backing onto the bushland are under threat and residents have been advised to stay or return home to put out any sparks or embers.

"There's four or five streets that back onto the reserve. It's got the potential to threaten about 1000 homes," he said.

Eighteen fire service crews and one helicopter are fighting the fire.

ok, so my home is one of those threatened, though i think we'll be ok.

but, if not, what should i do?

Posted by gumble on Oct-11-2006 14:18:

ive been in a bushfire once.

it really isnt the most pleasant thing. i was on holiday just south of sydney... think this was 2001 december fires.

it was weird, cos we had to go the town hall, locked in pitch black - with all these families that had lost thier homes.

and you couldnt see nor breathe properly cos of the damn eucalpytus in the smoke....

anyway, if a fire does come your way - you should have prepared a couple months ago ie, so u can stay and fight it.

california is on fire atm as well, the governator will save the day though

Posted by TCB on Oct-28-2006 04:31:

this year potential fire conditions are probably the worst here since the since the ash wed bush fires and my house is in the area ravaged by them, however according to the previous owners the fired jumped the house and the horse which was inside the house survived.

its very concerning right now and im hoping luck will go our way this summer. but the remanants of the ash wed fires are still visable around our property.
