Satan (eek!) Sony Reports Q2 Earnings Down 94 Percent From Year Prior

Holy shit...I guess they're really in the hole now with all those battery recalls, PS3 delays and etc...

Hopefully it doesn't affect the PS3 release and production otherwise Sony's dead in the water.

edit and speaking of the PS3's "production"...it's already bad enough. Sony's going to get destroyed this holiday season.

94%?! Jesus christ!

Someone's doing something right.

Thank god. Sony has had its head up its own ass far too long. They have to realise that outside of the Japaneese market, people are not as willing to swallow what they dish out.

On a side note: I was at the Sony Store last week(eaton center), and walked by their speaker section. I listen to the tune, hey its "Total black out", hey its a set by Oakenfold.

The interesting part was, they were playing a low bitrate stream of 32Kbps over their high end equipment. All you can hear is encoding artifacts, and nasty compression sounds. Good job idiots, show off your speakers with the shittiest source recording you could find! Just goes to show Sony's attitude comes through in every step they take; buy it because we make it.

They make totally awesome cameras and TVs though, you gotta give them that.

Also, I think everybody with their head on straight this holiday season will go with the Wii60 kinda thing over a PS3.

Both systems for the price of a single PS3. Glorious.

I'll give them TVs. Cameras are about average. They're gunning for the top spot with their compacts, but I still think Canon beats em out.

They make wicked phones though.

Sony's ALREADY dead in the water. But give 'em kudos for being in complete denial LOL.

Hopefully it doesn't affect the PS3 release and production? That's already a lost cause too lol.

Wii all the way.

Sony TVs are over rated. And their cameras are sub-par. I'm not gonna lie they've had some awesome models...but we get more people complaining about Sony cameras than any other brand we sell. A shit load of returns too.

I don't think that M$ is doing anything right in competing with Sony on the video game front; M$ has lost over a billion dollars on their xbox program.

source? (just curious since I've heard so much to the contrary)
And besides I kind of look at it like the cold war. Eventually the US just bankrupt Russia when Russia tried to keep up. Eventually Microsoft, if it stays its current path, could do the same to Sony as they try to compete on higher gaming technologies. While thier technology may be better, they have spent a fourtune developing it which could sink them if the playstation 3 fails to meet Sony's forecast sales.

Sony battery emits sparks during recall

2 hours, 55 minutes ago

TOKYO - A Sony-made battery used in a Fujitsu laptop computer overheated and emitted sparks, Fujitsu said Friday, amid a massive global recall involving Sony batteries.

A Fujitsu worker was visiting a customer's home to retrieve the laptop as part of the company's recall of Sony batteries when it overheated and started giving off sparks, according to Fujitsu spokesman Toshiaki Koike.

No one was injured in the incident, which is under investigation, Koike said.

Fujitsu is recalling more than 280,000 lithium-ion laptop batteries made by Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). because they pose a risk of overheating and bursting into flames.

Sony officials have said the problems were caused by microscopic metal particles left inside the battery, which can cause them to short circuit.

Almost every major laptop maker in the world, including Dell Inc., Apple Computer Inc. and Lenovo, has announced recalls of Sony lithium-ion batteries.

However, despite the jump in sales, the Home & Entertainment division once again lost money--a lot of money. It posted an operating loss of $414 million for the quarter, a 106 percent increase from the previous year. The biggest reason for the increase is the fact that, as Microsoft admits, it loses a significant amount of money on each Xbox 360 sold.

I love how for the past 10 years everyone was saying Nintendo is the one that will fall out of the gaming business and start making games for Xbox and Playstation, yet they're the only ones making any money. Both MS and Sony are going for this "cold war" type attitude trying to create the best technology out there, and selling it at a loss. Meanwhile Nintendo is going in a completely different direction, and judging from their marketing strategy, I think everyone else may be playing catch up to them by this time next year.

ah thanks. I now remember, its not even a total of a billion dollars, its about that figure per year. The entire "home entertainment" sector of their business has not made money since the introduction of the xbox.

This is all due to the battery recall. Less the batter recall Sony is in good financial health.
