Exclamation **** **** computer help now!!!

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

i am going to play an mp3 in winamp, i open the add file, and go to my music files. ALL MY FOLDERS ARE RENAMED. to numbers. random fucking strings of numbers. all the files as well. extensionless fucking strings of numbers. ALL OF MY FILES. everything in /Program Files/ and in My Documents is still intact, and everything on my other drive. WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.

does ANYONE know what this can be? PLEASE HELP ME.

Posted by Sunsnail on Nov-20-2006 02:46:

Don't touch anything on the harddrive. Don't mess with any of the files at all. Now go get a system restore program.

just look at this shit. one second i'm playing a track, the next:

Posted by Sunsnail on Nov-20-2006 02:54:

umm... I found this info

1. Turn off your computer immediately!!!
2. Place the hard drive in another computer
3. Run a program like Ontrack to recover your files
4. Prey that most songs are still there(if they haven't been overrriden, then they should be there)

Posted by Inertia on Nov-20-2006 02:56:

by going into my incoming folder and having winamp check for all file types, i can still play some files. they even have their id3 tags.

this looks like it was a mass rename. where did you read that jonSun?

Posted by emc^2 on Nov-20-2006 02:57:

system restore won't do shit. YOu got file system corruption. the good news that there's a good chance your stuff is still there, it needs to be pried out.

you need to obtain a copy of systinternals ERD (emergency recovery disk). You burn it on CD, insert a working drive (with plenty of space to move your data to). You boot from ERD and run a utility to recover your data. The way it works is it actually reads the data from drive instead of relying on your MBR/FAT (table of contents of stuff on your drive). Think of it this way: the table of contents page has been ripped out but the rest of the book should still be there.
Hope this helps. good luck.

That works, you could also try doing a checkdisk on your harddrive.
Goto Start
Click Run
Type cmd, then hit ok.
Type chkdsk /R
Type Y for yes.
Reboot.

If your machine is running, your drive is prolly not damaged, windows might have just screwed up.

Posted by Inertia on Nov-20-2006 03:00:

when it happened, i had slsk opened, was sending files to a friend. i cued up 3 folders (ie. the names were there). hit send, and all the transfers failed. i retried, failed again. i checked, and everything is now numbers.

i did this. but isn't it a good idea to try other things before a reboot? i have yet to reboot.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

SOorry dude, this is wrong. If he has FS corruption, checkdisk will find the files that are "oprahaned" and rename them to .chk and consider them lost.

your best bet sysinternals ERD

Posted by EXTREMUM on Nov-20-2006 03:09:

Plain and simple - run your anti-virus program.

I hope you have a backup, of your My Documents folder.

Good luck. Next time, don't tell me to fuck myself.

Just curious: say it were the case of virus. how would antivirus help after virus already fucked things up? Please enlighten me. Users like you make my job a nightmare and plain scare me.

Oh and as you could (or in your case couldn't) see - he doesn't kepe his music in "My documents". do you try to sounds smart or do you actually know what the hell you're talking about?

So, you think virii in your computer only attack once? They stay on the drive, and don't remain dormant - this isn't a human body.

After two years of technical school, four years of college background, and ten years of technical job experience, I sure do know what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter, where he keeps his music. Evidently, a virus screwed up his My Documents folder, and needs to be dealt with, before the entire drive gets screwed. Worst case scenario, if his drive is backed up properly, he can safely do a clean OS reinstall.

read again: everything has been renamed (although the file still work, should they be opened with the proper programs) EXCEPT the contents of My Documents, Windows, and Program Files folders.

Pretty much this happens after a hard shutdown or after a power surge or if you hard drive is fuller then full. Its kinda like being cooler then cool!

Like it been suggusted run chkdsk. But luckily, while chkdsk can fix problems, it also causes even more problems.

Fortuanley there is an easy fix. All you have to do is get another drive with the same sectors and size, and image the drive. on the new drive the only thing you would have to do attempt to run on the new drive run chkdsk, and any files that still exist would just have to be renamed. woohoo!

I agree with you depending on where the corruption happened. If the machine is running fine i doubt the corruption is of the whole MFT, its more likely just those sectors and chkdsk will correct the errors in the sectors. chkdsk might be more damaging only if the sectors are physically fux0red, because then the files will be lost. if it happened because of a particular program, the program probably just messed up those particular entries in the MFT and chkdsk can fix that.

well shit Sherlock, consider your money wasted. I would venture to guess that someone who runs mIrc, Soulseek as well as other p2p + other crapware would run AV on their system.

Please again, explain to me how My Documents comes into play here - I'm dying to hear it. I got no college education, so any help your hard earned knowledge could provide is greatly appreciated at least by me.

Oh, and not to swing any dicks around, I got MCSE, MCP, MCSA, CCNA, CCNP, A+, Server+, Compaq ASE, HP ASP, and CISSP certs...

And I taught in computer school for 5 years...

...oh, did I mention I managed/designed/supported THE largest Active Directory deployment in the world? 15 Million+ objects, over 110,000 users, 9000+ servers... The very same network that Microsoft uses to test limitations of their OS?
..alas, no college diploma or highly-valuable tech school experience. Just self taught since I was 12. Way before windows.

mmokay thx buh bye.
