130-135bpm trance

Hey MD, I need your insight once again, please. Most of the time I mix uplifting trance in the 138bpm range. However, the latest ISOS compilation really opened my eyes to some sweet tracks around the 130-132bpm range.

I would like your recommendations on tracks that are still melodic and uplifting, but somewhere in the less "driving" range of 130-135bpm. Examples of tracks from ISOS 5 that I enjoy include:

Parker & Hanson - Let Me Be
Kalafut & Fygle - Novocaine (Mark Otten Remix)
Basic Perspective - Small Step On The Other Side
Global Experience - Zanzibar
Estuera - Tales From The South (Revision Flow)
Jonas Steur - Second Turn
Aspect - Hi Jack

I currently own the vinyls of the ISOS 5 vinyl sampler, Basic Perspective - Small Step On The Other Side, Global Experience - Zanzibar, and Smith & Pledger pres Aspect - Hi Jack. I also own Mike Koglin vs. Jono Grant - Sequential (really dig both mixes on that vinyl), which includes Pig and Dan's 130bpm mix.

Hopefully these examples will give you ideas about what I'd like to find more of. As always, thanks in advance, and I appreciate your thoughts.

Most of the stuff Schulz spins would probably fit the bill rather well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going over some samples on Amazon right now. Any particular mixcomp of his that really stands out?

I'm no Schulz fan, but i'm guessing Ibiza '05 and Ibiza '06 would be good starting points...

The big thing about the 130-135 bpm trance/house hybrid is that it doesnt necessarily mean that there is less punch than trance at 138-40... its still got quite a bit of power.

I'd actually say ISOS5 CD2 is a bad example of this style... in places the tracks sound too slow on that mix... but done correctly it does sound good.

Good point. I guess my thing is this: sometimes (say, after a stressful week at work) mixing in the 138bpm range is just overkill for me. It seems to quick. Too rushed. Too "tense," for lack of a better term. Sure, I can slow down something like Fred Baker vs. Nyram - Confirmation to about 134bpm, but to me it sounds like shite. I'd like to find stuff that is still uplifting and/or melodic, but that "by default" is in the 130-135bpm range. That way I can speed it up or slow it down a bit without the track sounding so "off". Make sense, or am I just full of it?

Edit: Plus, I just picked out ISOS 5 because this is the only CD I own where I have been exposed to this style of trance at this particular BPM. I'm sure there are better examples, which is why I've come to the right place to get those answers.

Yeah definitely check out Schulz's Coldharbour '04, Miami '05, and Ibiza '06 for some good stuff around that bpm. Also try Oakie's 2004 mix cd "Creamfields". There's some good stuff on there. I'd also recommend anything by Joni Ljungqvist aka JPL, LNQ.

Posted by Spirit5 on Nov-22-2006 19:49:

Yeah Ljunqgvist definitely, also Hydroid comes to mind, and of course Mark Otten. You also might want to check out some of Probspot's, Peter McCowan/Alucard and Perry O'Neils work, though it more progressive house than trance. Another one would probably be Solar Stone. Most of their stuff seems to be around 134/135 BPM. Really i'de check out the labels Coldharbour, Deep Blue, Toes In The Sand and Lost Language.

Thanks for the label suggestions, Spirit5. Browsing labels will give me a broader search area, and I just might find many gems that I like! I will check out those labels this week or this weekend.

Yeah no problem. Your just basically looking for progressive trance or "deep" trance or stuff often labeled progressive house, but with a more trancey feel. That's the stuff i'm into. 3 Colours, Benz & MD, Peter Martin and Rob B are others to check out.

I hear ya Spirit5, I definitely recommend:

Waveforce-Perry O'Neil
Rico Soarez-TV Dinner
Ava Mea-In the End

Just about anything on the Electronic Elements label really.

Forgot that label, thanks.

Posted by Ted Promo on Nov-22-2006 21:23:

as per Jonas Steur - Second Turn

that ch00n is at 138 bpm. In fact, most ch00ns by Jonas are in 138 bpm. They sound as though they should be around 132-135, and that's what makes many of them kinda neat to me. A bit deceiving in ze pitch if you know what I meaaaaan.

I just recalled that I own Matthew Dekay vs. Proluctors - The Deep Show, and it's on the EE label. These are all greats suggestions. Thanks a ton, guys. And I suppose these tunes are more "progressive" than anything, so my bad on the thread title.

I understand that the qualities associeated with trance are most prominent within a certain bpm range but you can't say that it should be at least 137 bpm or at least another bpm value. A 137 bpm trance tune does not cease to be trance just because it's slowed down to 135 bpm.

Yeah there are a lot of trance releases that are under 137 BPM. A lot of progressive trance is under 137 BPM.

I agree. I love listening to all the meloldic, progressive trance mentioned in this thread, but if I'm djing trance its going to be TRANCE - banging, kicking, pulsating, entrancing...not sure of the word but you know what I mean. Not that I don't like the progressive housey trance thats so popular with Markus, Tiesto, etc.
