laptops
I'm going to be travelling/moving to Asia in about 2 months or so and I'm looking to get a laptop. So I need something light and portable. I don't want a one of those 17" behemoths that are the size of the starship enterprise.
Macbook or Pc laptop?
If I get a macbook would be a problem to use in Asia? Or would it be a better idea to get a Pc laptop? Ideally I'd like to spend 1200 or less.
I don't play games, so all I'd really need is to download stuff, surf web and maybe fiddle with some music programs. I'm thinking that since I don't play games i can sacrafice some processor speed for more memory?
Thanks.
??
The answer is in the question
there are some pretty sweet apple ones that are small. pricey though...over 2k. but man, are they cool. i was window shopping in the apple store last weekend on lincoln road. i want one
I have a powerbook and an IBM Lenovo ThinkPad T60P.
The only thing i like more about the T60p is the fingerprint security LogIn.
If you arent going to play games then go with a Mac...
I only use my PC now when I play games, I just find the Mac more suitable for music and everyday objectives.
Why not consider buying one there? Notebooks in Asia are usually a LOT smaller (if you think the current line of Apple is small, wait until you see some of the ones there [fujitsu, toshiba..]).
Not sure about prices, though. Also, you'd have to consider about OS language (if it's OSX, it's easy to switch, but it's probably cheaper at home) and software issues.
yeah wait and buy one there. MANY MANY more options.
And many many more dollars too. Well, at least in Japan they are. The average household in japan doesnt even have a computer or washer/dryer. Electronics are expensive as hell and yet there are huge flat screens everywhere at outside malls and stuff, its weird. But then again, I was there like 7 years ago. Maybe things are different now. Where in Asian are you going?
Buy it. Cheap $ 100.

well I would suggest buying it there - due to the different voltage in asia!
that is all....

the ONLY thing i would say that i would HIGHLY recommend is a full size keyboard. fuck that compact keyboard shit. your wrists will hurt a lot after a few months. mine did and i still have problems at times and im not even on a laptop much anymore.
I'd say go with a Macbook. Once you move you can just buy the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit and have no problems what-so-ever. Also, if you go with something with Windows on it, you're going to have to deal with a pre-SP1 Windows operating system, which never ends well.
How many terraflops do you think your computer requires?
Once you go Mac
You never go back

Buying any form of computer equipment around the world should really never be a problem.
They all tend to have switching power supplies which function with 110 or 220 volts. You just need plug adapters or different detachable power cords.
But the biggest issue is the WARRANTY!
Be careful because a lot of companies do NOT honor a warranty if you are trying to make a claim outside the country of purchase.
You also need to be clear if you have specific desires about going with a super lightweight laptop or not ( there are some fairly decently priced models but a lot of these tend to usually be in the upper price range ).
I'm looking for about 5 lbs or so something i guess in the thin and light category.
those ultraportbales usualy dont' have an optical drive and having an external one just doesn't appeal to me.
